In 2025, nearly 96% of all new cars sold in Norway were fully electric. In December? 98%. Yes, you read that right.
Let that sink in: Only 4 out of every 100 new cars on Norwegian roads still burn fossil fuels.
Tesla crushed it for the fifth year straight, grabbing 19% of the market. The Model Y alone sold more cars in Norway in one year than any automaker has ever sold in the country — ever.
Chinese EVs are also charging ahead. Brands like BYD doubled their sales, pushing China-made cars to nearly 14% of the market.
How did Norway do it? Carrot AND stick.
✅ Tax breaks for EVs.
❌ Heavy taxes on petrol and diesel.
"ICE cars are taxed out of business," says the head of Norway's EV association.
The rush before the hike: Norway announced a new VAT on EVs starting Jan 1, 2026 — up to $5,000 per car. So buyers and automakers scrambled. Ford literally redirected cars meant for other countries to get them to Norway faster.
What's coming? Smaller, cheaper EVs (under $30,000) stay VAT-free in 2026. Compact cars are coming back.
While the rest of Europe backtracks on EV targets, Norway is already at the finish line.
Gas stations? So last century. ⚡🇳🇴
