Synopsis :
A Londres, à l'époque victorienne. Le capitaine Crewe, un officier de l'armée britannique, doit partir pour la guerre des Boers. Il confie Sara, son enfant de 11 ans, à Amanda Linchin, la directrice d'un pensionnat de jeunes filles. Lorsque son père est porté disparu au front, Sara, pauvre petite fille riche, devient le souffre-douleur de la directrice qui lui confie toutes les basses besognes. Elle se retrouve ainsi à partager la vie des domestiques, lavant la vaisselle et récurant les parquets. Malheureuse mais toutefois très courageuse, elle décide de partir à la recherche de son père....
