00:00Today May 8th marks Sir David Attenborough's 100th birthday and one small local crafting
00:06group has took this celebration to their own wild project.
00:10We've been knitting and crocheting gifts for elderly people and having a chat trying
00:14to work out what was significant about 2026 so I did a quick google search to see what
00:20significant dates there were and obviously the first one that popped up was David Attenborough's
00:25100th this year and I was like that's perfect and everybody else around the table just went
00:31yes let's do it.
00:32David Attenborough's storytelling has inspired millions across the globe but in particular
00:37he's inspired this group of crafters behind me in crafting a hundred different animals
00:42each one shaped by the stories he has spent decades telling.
00:46It varies on how detailed they are. David took about five six hours to make
00:55and when you're working with a small hook and small thread everything takes a lot longer.
01:01They are knitted flat for the most part so this is the start of an angel fish so this
01:07is going to be his body and it will be sewn up like so and then his fins and what
01:13have
01:13you will be knitted separately and sewn on.
01:16And these crafted animals have left the shop onto their own adventures as bright letterbox
01:21toppers and window displays. But what does David Attenborough mean for this group of crafters?
01:27I think he's a national treasure and everyone can get involved and see what he goes to see
01:33and it's accessible for everybody as well as kids or older people anyone can watch it.
01:40He gets to visit places that most of us will never ever see so experiencing his experiences in those places
01:49I think makes it the rest of the world a little bit more real to us.
01:53I grew up watching David Attenborough. He's a national treasure. Weekends, watching TV, watching his shows.
02:02Happy 100th birthday Sir David!
