05:31Mr. Praful Henge.
05:59Mr. Saakib Hussain.
06:20Mr. Eshan Malinga.
06:38Mr. Murali Dharan.
06:42Mr. Shyam.
07:06And now, we move to the most awaited moment.
07:09May I invite our distinguished guest, Jayesh Randangaru, for the official unveiling of the Apollo Center of Excellence for Sports
07:17Injuries and Orthopedics.
08:43Ladies and gentlemen, with the launch of this centre, Apollo Hospitals takes another important step forward in advancing sports injury
08:52care, rehabilitation and recovery in Hyderabad.
08:56Behind every performance, there is discipline, there is recovery and there is resilience.
09:01To explore the evolving importance of recovery, sports medicine and injury management, we now move into a short fireside interaction.
09:09May I invite Dr. Deepti Nandan Reddy to moderate the conversation with our guests and the SRH team.
09:19Thank you very much.
09:20First of all, I would like to thank all of you for coming and would like to give an introduction
09:26of what we are doing here.
09:28So, sports injuries have always been like you come to the hospital, get a checkup done, get an X-ray
09:34done, MRI done and you get a surgery or something else done.
09:37But what we want to establish here is to identify the problem before it starts, means we can do a
09:44prehab, means we assess these injuries, but we didn't have a tool to assess it well.
09:49So, we just recently got a tool from Australia, which is helping us assess this, which is called the VALDE
09:55and this is what we are making it as the main thing to assess patients or even pre-patients or
10:04sportsmen so that we can identify the problem areas and correct them before we can even get into surgery board
10:10effect.
10:11And not all surgeries, all injuries require surgeries.
10:15That's the reason why we want to assess them and get them to rehabilitation where my physio team comes into
10:20play.
10:20And if they come into surgery, we have developed a team in our own unit where I do upper limb
10:26surgery, shoulder, elbow and hand surgery.
10:28My team, Dr. Amitredi does mostly foot and ankle, Dr. Aviteja does knee surgery, Dr. Nitish Ban does hip surgery.
10:37So, we have identified each part of our team to take care of one part of the body.
10:43And this is what the ethos of whole thing is.
10:46And once you have had the surgery, the most important thing, as you know, as sportsmen, we need to get
10:51back to your level of original activity.
10:53So, that's when we assess them again.
10:56We have normative data for the national teams so we can get these patients back on to that level and
11:01then get them back to sports.
11:03That's the return to sports program.
11:06And as a physiotherapist, you would understand this very well.
11:09So, to make it more interactive, I'll just start some questions and answers so you can answer some questions.
11:17So, starting off with a captain.
11:20Excellent team at the moment.
11:22Doing very well.
11:23Congratulations for your going on to the top of the table.
11:28Applause.
11:31And one thing I love, yeah, one thing I love about Pat Cummins is your presence on the field changes
11:40the way the whole team works.
11:42It's amazing.
11:43You're very calm, composed.
11:45You've done it into the Australian team which was actually in the bottom and you've raised it to that level
11:50where they've won championships.
11:52Now, you're doing that with SRH.
11:54A decade ago, we won the team, we won the cup.
11:57This is the time we are going to win it.
12:00What do you think?
12:04First of all, great to be here.
12:05It's a beautiful looking building and place.
12:08So, congratulations on what you've done here.
12:12I can't take too much credit.
12:13I've only played the last three or four games.
12:15So, these boys have been flying the whole season.
12:20I think you're lucky today.
12:21You've got the smartest guys in the team, the fast bowlers.
12:25And I think these guys are a lot of the reason why we're at the top of the table.
12:29So, I've loved it.
12:31HydroVide's been great to me the last couple of years.
12:34It's a very easy bunch of players to look after.
12:38Everyone knows what they want to do out there.
12:40So, it's easy for me to stay nice and calm.
12:43And, yeah, just let the guys shine because they're all superstars.
12:50And you've been through injuries, sports injuries.
12:53And especially, I remember in the Ashes series last time, the very critical matches you were missing from this thing.
12:59What was the main injury and how did you recover from it?
13:02And when do you actually decide that I'm good enough to go and play?
13:07Yeah, so, I've had quite a few injuries like most fast bowlers, mainly back injuries, stress fractures.
13:14And, I mean, to be honest, without a place like this, like a very high caliber of care over the
13:23years, I definitely wouldn't be in the position that I am right now.
13:26So, there's a lot of testing, MRI, a lot of kind of workload management.
13:33They're probably the main things.
13:35And then, of course, you do gym and rehab and things around that.
13:38But, yeah, it's constant kind of, because they're mainly bone injuries, it's screening and kind of monitoring until you get
13:47it up to a level where you feel like you can start building up and get ready for the high
13:52intensity that an IPL match needs.
13:54Are there any objective measures of finding out, you know, when you're fit to go back?
14:01Yeah, again, you know, MRIs definitely probably were the most subjective when it comes to how the bone is healing.
14:08But we'll also use, like, we use GPS monitors in the, we wear them in the back of our shirt.
14:14You might see that in a game.
14:15That gives you good data on the intensity that you're bowling, how many balls you're bowling, your run-up speed,
14:21things like that.
14:22That's pretty good objective measures of training to know that you're ready for a game.
14:26So, the technology you see on the screen or the various technology we're getting for tracking the ball and everything
14:32else, I bet that would have been replicated in the physiotherapy as well.
14:36How much of it is helping you with getting them back to their normal activities?
14:43First of all, like, we get all the normative datas and we see their pre-season datas.
14:49And with all the collective datas which we had the previous year and see where he is.
14:56And with that, any lag in that, we try to match it.
15:00Probably try to offload him and train him more before getting into the major event.
15:05Event, okay.
15:07Pat, once you've had an injury and you want to recover, for example, you've had a hectic day yesterday.
15:12How do you recover from it immediately for the next game?
15:15Because IPL is a quite packed season.
15:18So, how do you actually come around that?
15:21Yeah, when you get into a tournament, the playing is obviously the priority.
15:25So, you know, I don't do a lot of bowling outside of games.
15:29It's mainly about recovery and for me that's, you know, today I did gym.
15:35So, that's, you know, hamstrings, glutes, kind of things that as a fast bowler you need to manage constantly.
15:43So, I'll do that.
15:44And most of my focus outside of the game is actually on kind of preparing my plans.
15:49But the actual physical prep is mainly done in the gym or resting.
15:54And, you know, there's 14 games in 7 or 8 weeks.
15:57You do most of your work in the games.
15:59And many times I've seen that when the team is down, you pick up the ball and you say you
16:05bowl.
16:06And that is an amazing quality you have as a captain.
16:08And that's how a leader should be.
16:10How do you mentally prepare yourself when you're down?
16:12And how do you get the team up?
16:17I mean, it's an IPL game.
16:19So, it's not that hard to get everyone excited and amped up.
16:23I think you just, you want to get more excited about what happens if things go right than thinking about
16:28what goes wrong.
16:31So, as fast bowlers, the odds are stacked against you a lot in IPL.
16:35It's big scores.
16:36Yes.
16:36But it also presents an opportunity to bounce back.
16:40Like, even if you have one bad over, you know, your next over could still win that match because the
16:46scores are so high.
16:46So, just trying to problem solve, get better.
16:49You're not going to win every game of the season.
16:51So, not stressing too much about it.
16:53It's more about how can I learn from this, get better for the next game.
16:56Great.
16:57Thank you very much.
16:58Now we'll move.
16:59Yeah, one more question.
17:00I have a question for you.
17:02How do you prepare mentally?
17:04Because there's so much of pressure.
17:06See, I'm in the sport of archery and we know this amount of pressure you have when we go into
17:10the Olympics.
17:10Now, how do you prepare for this mental pressure?
17:14Yeah, I'd say two things.
17:15One is I actually want to be as fresh as I can.
17:18So, I actually switch off from cricket as much as I can.
17:22And then I feel like when I need to switch on in the game, I've got kind of enough bandwidth
17:27to give it my full focus.
17:30So, not spending 24 hours a day wasting my energy before the actual game starts.
17:36And then the second one is just being as prepared as you can.
17:39We do a lot of, you know, we'll sit around the morning of a game.
17:43We'll go through a bit of data.
17:45We'll kind of plan how we think we want to play.
17:47And as a captain, I'll have a plan B, plan C.
17:50So, I go into the game fresh, feeling like I've got different plans wherever the game takes me.
17:57I don't get too nervous.
17:59I feel like there's not much more I could have done.
18:00And I've probably played enough that whatever gets thrown at me, I've seen it before and try and adapt.
18:07I've gone to the move, young guns of SRH.
18:11Opening game, fantastic over, first over, two wickets.
18:15So, that would, you were completely on a high at that time.
18:18You had an injury, I remember, 2022.
18:22And you were struggling to come out of, because the most fast bowlers go through this.
18:28How did you come out of it?
18:29What made you come out of it?
18:31And who was the main people who helped you?
18:34Actually, I had also stress fracture before, L4.
18:37So, I recovered from that, like, I took nine months for.
18:41I didn't play cricket.
18:42I didn't do anything and already didn't drive car and all anything.
18:45But I know that's time I have to enjoy and I have to work on that.
18:48Then I prepare myself.
18:50Then I just love and I just started playing cricket.
18:52I'm doing good, so I'm happy.
18:54So, mostly building up on your strength and everything gradually.
18:58Yeah.
18:59Yeah.
18:59Great.
19:01And all the best for the next season.
19:02Thank you so much.
19:03And the another sensation we have right now.
19:08Is Mr. Malinga.
19:09He's been doing an excellent job with the ball.
19:12I think that's why we have been winning games.
19:14I think it's because of you.
19:15Because the batting has always been good.
19:17The bowlers came to the party this time.
19:19So, how do you train to get your accuracy right?
19:23And how, what are the things biomechanically which have worked with you,
19:28with the physiotherapist, has really helped you?
19:32I get that accuracy from practices.
19:35Because I practice a lot and I bowl one sport bowling and do batsmen.
19:44And I get that patience to the game as well.
19:51And I like to bowl sport bowling much.
19:57Okay, thank you.
19:59Now, another sensation.
20:03Yeah, yeah.
20:05So, how did you come to this team in the first time?
20:09It's very good.
20:10How much do you get support?
20:13It's very good.
20:14Like you have a captain, a pad, a person, a person, a person, a person.
20:17I mean, a lot of teams support us.
20:19And it's a good motivator.
20:34All the best.
20:35Thank you very much.
20:37So, moving on to Dr. Jayesh Ranjan, sir.
20:40Sir, you have been phenomenal or instrumental in getting IT,
20:48getting IT into Hyderabad.
20:50And you created the IT hub for...
20:54Yeah.
20:55No, no, for him.
20:57Sorry.
20:58Sorry.
21:01So, you have been instrumental in getting the IT hub.
21:04And you got Hyderabad as the place for IT.
21:08Now, there are lots of sports enthusiasts in Hyderabad.
21:11You have the world's largest cycling club in Hyderabad.
21:14The runners' club is big.
21:16We have a lot of cricket grounds around the city.
21:20And many other sports.
21:22Badminton is coming up and everything else is coming up.
21:24So, are you going to create a sports hub or something?
21:28What is the plan for us?
21:29Please let us know.
21:31So, thank you.
21:32And before answering your question, I would like to congratulate the Apollo group.
21:37Apollo group has been making us proud for decades now.
21:42And this is yet another phenomenal center.
21:45And I really appreciate the fact that you have chosen to put together a faculty on sports medicine, sports injury.
21:53Typically, many sports persons who suffer injuries, they typically tend to go to a...
21:59They consult an orthopedic doctor.
22:01And many times, while the orthopedic doctors may be very professional, very qualified,
22:05but they don't understand the nuances of a sports injury vis-a-vis a regular road accident or whatever.
22:12So, congratulations to you, all of us.
22:15I would also like to congratulate the Sunrisers team, Pat in particular.
22:19The team is doing so well.
22:22And yesterday, with RCB's loss, our path to top one and two seems to be closer and closer and closer.
22:29So, good wishes to the team.
22:32It's also a great idea to get all the fast bowlers for this event.
22:36Because amongst all the sports persons, this is one lot which is the maximum injury prone.
22:42Pat himself missed the first week due to back injury.
22:46Others have also had their shares of injury.
22:48But I would like to, while I'll answer your question, I'm not skipping that.
22:52But I'd like you to also focus on what would be a preventive method of guiding a sports person.
22:58See, you both coach, in fact, he's a very good example.
23:02Praful or Shahakim.
23:04You should learn from Varun Arun.
23:06How do you not injure him?
23:07See, Varun Arun, Pat, I don't know whether you know this or not.
23:11He used to bowl quicker than you.
23:13He would be consistently bowling at 150 and above.
23:17But his career was ruined because of it.
23:20Correct.
23:20He was faster than Ashish Naira, Ishaan Sharma, Zahir Khan, Umesh Yadav.
23:25All the bowlers in that period.
23:28But he just couldn't do well.
23:30He hardly played maybe 10 test matches.
23:33He won't play.
23:33What are your concerns?
23:34Varun Arun.
23:35Varun Arun.
23:36You should learn from him how to be injured.
23:44So, but of course, the fact that you have created this facility in Hyderabad, we would like all the sports
23:53to benefit from it.
23:55In fact, I will be proposing that we ask the Telangana Olympic Association to enter into a formal agreement with
24:02you.
24:02Any sports person who has become a member of our state team and goes through some unfortunate injury, they should
24:09become a center for their rehabilitation.
24:11We are also starting a sports university.
24:14And sports science, sports medicine is one of the disciplines.
24:17So, like a medical college where the students go to a hospital to get practical training, I would like those
24:23students to come here and actually see how you are managing injuries of different sports persons.
24:29So, it's a great asset for us.
24:32It will give a very big boost to our sporting ecosystem.
24:35And all the best to you.
24:38But I would again reiterate that let us hope that we focus a lot on preventive aspects.
24:45See, many times fast bowlers, when they go through, let us say, the MRAF or one of these foundations, their
24:52actions are corrected.
24:53A seasoned coach knows that if he continues to stress himself, he is bound to kind of develop something much
25:00serious.
25:01So, how do you guide people in these kind of things?
25:03A javelin thrower, a footballer, a hockey player, a fast bowler, a sprinter.
25:09So, let us develop modules on how do you manage your posture, your bowling run-up and stuff like that.
25:17But once again, a great facility.
25:19Many, many congratulations.
25:21Thank you very much, sir.
25:21As you mentioned, the biomechanics is very, very important.
25:25And in fact, a lot of body is a human machine.
25:30So, we need to get the mechanics right for it to work optimally.
25:33And this is where we are going to work.
25:34And we will be very much happy to collaborate and create a good facility and also support you at the
25:40university as well.
25:41Thank you very much for that initiative, sir.
25:44Last but not the least, sir, Anil, sir, you have been an inspiration for the archery team of India.
25:51Can you please outline what you are planning to do for the archery point of view?
25:55And because archery is picking up and has come to a very good level in India at the moment.
26:01Thank you very much for that initiative and doing a wonderful job with that, sir.
26:06As you all know, just yesterday, our women archers beat Korea.
26:12Korea are the world champions and we beat them.
26:14And we are having the finals on Sunday.
26:18Our team is in China and they are doing very well there.
26:21So, we hope they will be continuing and we are, as you know, with the Asian Games coming up and
26:27in preparation for the Olympics, we are doing a lot.
26:30And the question which I had asked Pat just now about mental preparation, we always felt that we need to
26:36do something more about mental preparation.
26:38So, having seen the success of all the leagues, like in cricket and other sports, we have also started an
26:45archery league in which we are getting the top archers of the world to come to India.
26:50And they are competing along with Indian archers.
26:53We have six different teams and the top archers of the world along with the top archers of India, they
26:59are competing.
26:59So, that has helped us a lot also mentally as well as in preparation.
27:03So, you all have set a very good example to us.
27:07And like he was mentioning about how people in India, you all know cricket is a kind of a religion.
27:17So, we are trying to get people into archery also, seeing because it is a mythological sport.
27:23In Indian mythology, we have had the Ramayana and Mahabharata where we have had archer shooting.
27:28So, that is how we wish to push through.
27:31And then right now, out of 150 countries of the world that are competing in archery, India is among the
27:37top four or five.
