iphone, fold, ultra, Unbox Therapy

00:00Ok, exciting times, we have a nondescript package from China, and it's that time of year, the upcoming iPhone devices.
00:10I really want to check out that new folding form factor, which I think there's going to be a mock
00:14-up inside of this package.
00:16And these things get sent to me always around this time of year prior to the release of the next
00:21generation iPhone.
00:22So let's get inside this box, do a little examination.
00:25Anytime you see this orange tape, you know you're in for it.
00:27Like that, that orange tape right there, that is right from the factory.
00:34I think this is the Ultra Variant.
00:38Oh, and before I jump inside here, I want to mention potential upcoming devices.
00:46Like maybe even more refined than this.
00:49So make sure to subscribe, because there might be one that's even more refined showing up.
00:53I'm not sure. We never know what we're going to get, but I'm barely certain.
00:57Oh yeah, look at this. Here we have our first look, wow, that's crazy, at the upcoming folding iPhone.
01:07Whoa.
01:08So strange.
01:10This form factor, that is strange.
01:14It's a little like passport shape to it.
01:22So this is the exact comparison that I thought about. Will just brought me one of the Pixel Folds, because
01:28it obviously also had an unusual aspect ratio.
01:30But this is, this is crazy stuff. It's a little shorty. I don't know if they're going to sell a
01:36lot of this thing, because you've got to open it up, because otherwise it's weird.
01:40That is a weird, I mean people will buy it. It's Apple, it's an iPhone, it's a new Apple iPhone,
01:46but that is a very strange experience.
01:48Now I guess the magic happens. I'm just going to take this piece off, so I can fully open it.
01:53That's the magic happening there.
01:55I mean, this is nice. Watching video, playing games, stuff like that. Now the hinge is going to be different.
02:01It'll be more robust.
02:01It'll kind of like lock into place, obviously. There have been folding devices now, for a long time, from other
02:08manufacturers.
02:09And it was like, is Apple doing it? They're working on it? When's it going to be done? This is
02:13what we ended up with. How fat is it?
02:15Well, I think it's fatter than any of the other iPhones, right?
02:19Yeah, like this is a mock-up of 17 Pro Max. I know the 18 Pro Max is going to
02:25get a little thicker itself, but this is, it's fatter, it's stubbier, it's kind of weird.
02:30Anyway, volume buttons make their way to the top of the device. Speakers have a kind of strange layout.
02:36One speaker up here, and the other over here, where your hand might be kind of covering one versus the
02:43other, depending on how you're holding it.
02:44I guess if you hold it like this, that's not the case. Our port looks to be in this location
02:48over here.
02:49Then our large power button, yeah, it's pretty much where your thumb lines up.
02:54Camera bump is enormous. It's the thickest iPhone in a really long time, that's for sure.
03:07Now, before we get into measuring all the details of the upcoming Apple folding phone, I want to mention today's
03:14sponsor, which is Whisperflow, and regardless of which new iPhone you end up ordering, you're definitely going to want to
03:20check out Whisperflow.
03:21And that allows you to basically write faster in every app. I mean, pretty much anybody, most people, I would
03:27think, myself definitely, can speak and dictate a lot faster than they can type.
03:32And the magic piece is that it just turns your natural language into ready to send text without needing to
03:39start some new dictation. I'll show you what I mean.
03:41Hey Tim, excited to chat. Are you available next Friday at 3pm? Actually, 4pm. Thanks, Lewis.
03:48It's smart enough in this case to understand that I'm changing from 3pm to 4pm and I don't want to
03:54dictate the 3pm portion.
03:55It says to whisper as softly as you can. Alright.
03:58Run the laundry. Buy groceries.
04:01That's kind of impressive because I think one of the big barriers with voice dictation is this sort of privacy
04:08component and like being considerate to others.
04:11You want me to go even softer?
04:12Go on a walk.
04:16Okay, I mean that's a little crazy. That might be a little extreme.
04:20But the fact that it works shows you that the tech is extremely sophisticated.
04:24Now obviously since this plugs directly into your keyboard, you can then integrate it with whichever apps you want to
04:30use.
04:31So Slack, Gmail, ChatGPT, Notion, iMessage, and then on your Mac, Windows, iPhone, Android.
04:38It's now totally cross-platform so you can use it on your iOS device, Android device, and it can get
04:45even more powerful in my opinion when using it on your laptop.
04:47Alright, now it's your turn to try out Whisperflow.
04:50Head over to the link in this video description but make sure to use the code UNBOX to get one
04:54month free of Whisperflow Pro.
04:57Unfolded, it makes a lot of sense. It feels good in the hand here.
05:01See, the benefit of being stubbier is that when you're not top-heavy when you're unfolded.
05:08Very stable up top because the center of gravity is lower or closer to your grip compared to any of
05:16the mainstream folding devices that are taller.
05:20See, those devices aim to prioritize one-handed functionality in the folded state.
05:27The point is, is that this is a departure. It's unique for Apple going this direction and I guess with
05:33prioritization on the unfolded state.
05:36Are they, is it trying to be more like an iPad? Let me just see something real quick.
05:41Is it trying to be, it is. It's trying to be more like an iPad aspect ratio.
05:47It's a well-known aspect ratio. Does this make it better for developers?
05:52iPad apps will be able to map better to this folding profile than they would to something that was taller,
06:00which created unique aspect ratios in unfolded situations.
06:05This is like a pocketable iPad. Look at the curve here. Identical.
06:09You know what it's like? It's like the iPad Nano.
06:12You know the iPad mini? This is the iPad Nano right here.
06:15Okay. Let's pull the calipers. Let's just see how big this thing actually is.
06:20And one 17 millimeters in terms of height and width 84.27 millimeters.
06:34What about our depth?
06:37Well, first of all, no camera hump 11 then camera hump.
06:41In terms of ratio, that difference between the thickness of the non camera hump section and the camera hump section
06:49is massive.
06:5011 versus 16 and a half.
06:52And it obviously means, whoa, ladies and gentlemen, it might be a wobble champion.
07:00Look at that ramp creation. Bam.
07:03And I suppose the same would be the case in the unfolded form.
07:10You're not going to use it on the tabletop.
07:12That is a big camera bump.
07:14What does that tell me?
07:14It tells me they don't want to downgrade the camera performance.
07:18And it kind of makes sense if they're going to call it ultra.
07:21You can't downgrade the cameras and still call it ultra.
07:24It's got cellular communication.
07:26It is a phone.
07:27But for me, it really feels like a folding iPad just based on the way they went with the aspect
07:32ratio.
07:33This is thin.
07:34If we're just talking about this right here, that's thin.
07:365.2 on the thinnest point.
07:39Probably very similar to the air.
07:40Let's see.
07:415.6.
07:43I mean, very, very comparable.
07:44So if you want to know how it feels when it's unfolded, it's going to feel like the air.
07:49Pocket is not a problem because it's shorter.
07:54The height of it actually makes it better in the pocket than some of those taller ones.
07:58But this is going to be an unfolded device.
08:01You're not going to be using it like that.
08:03Other than to just answer a quick call or text, you're going to be in this situation all the time.
08:09Because this feels like a major downgrade from your existing iPhone experience.
08:14You know, the other thing it's reminiscent of is maybe BlackBerry.
08:18Remember some of those weird aspect ratios that, I mean, they had the product called the Passport.
08:22I don't think it was quite this stubby.
08:24It lets you get a slightly wider keyboard.
08:26And again, I think it's just getting away from any kind of top heaviness.
08:31Now, obviously we've seen these devices get thinner and lighter and that sort of avoids that top heaviness.
08:37But with them wanting to put such a serious camera layout in imbalance in weight towards the top,
08:43they shrunk it down and made it shorter to accommodate that.
08:46And I think there's also sort of an assumption here that the priority is in the unfolded state.
08:52That is the state that you are expected to mostly use this in.
08:57I mean, they have enough other products in the lineup if you want just a regular phone.
09:00So, I don't know.
09:02Pricing is going to play a big role too.
09:03They called it ultra.
09:04It's going to have an ultra price tag, I'll tell you that.
09:07And in this economy, I don't know.
09:09That might be a tough sale as well.
09:11But either way, there you have it.
09:12That's our best look or early handling hands-on with the upcoming ultra variant of the iPhone,
09:21which is better known obviously as the long rumored and finally happening folding iPhone.
09:29Unbelievable.
09:29And by the way, like I said, this is not the only next generation iPhone video that we have coming.
09:35So, make sure to hit the subscribe button so you don't miss potentially an even better look than this one.
