Both the performers and the composer of this lovely song are unjustly and almost totally forgotten. This band was led by trumpet player Walter Bennett, about whom I found no information at all. The band pianist and the composer of this piece, J.C. Johnson, is slightly better known, because a.o. E. Fitzgerald and B. Holiday recorded famous versions of it in 1938. This recording however (featuring uncredited vocalist) was made in 1930. As for Johnson (1897-1981), he came to New York City in the 1920's. He wrote songs such as ''Empty Bed Blues,'' recorded by Bessie Smith; ''When,'' recorded by Paul Whiteman; ''Believe It, Beloved,'' and ''Don't Let Your Love Go Wrong.'' But his most famous composition was ''The Joint Is Jumpin' '' - one of the most popular numbers in the current Broadway show, ''Ain't Misbehavin'.'' In Harlem, Johnson joined the Crescendo Club, a group of black songwriters whose compositions were performed by the major bands of the day.
