00:00It meant a very great deal, Mr. Previa, to receive your generous invitation to come here myself
00:05and to make Bermuda my first overseas territory visit as king.
00:12In fact, I am told, to my amazement, it is also the first time in Bermuda's 400-year history
00:20that the islands have actually received a reigning king.
00:23So I'm terribly sorry it has taken so long.
00:30But, ladies and gentlemen, if I am honest, I find it hard to believe that my,
00:34I think it was my first visit here, it was 56 years ago,
00:38because I came back when I was in the Royal Navy, 73, I think, and once another time.
00:44When I, in those days, 56 years ago, I was a mere 21-year-old,
00:49able at that stage to bound up all 185 steps of Gibbs Hill Lighthouse
00:56and the now-magnificent Royal Ponciana I planted just over there, that's right,
01:04was little more than a small sap one.
01:07Despite the years since, the impression left upon me
01:11by this extraordinary archipelago has not faded
01:15and it has given me the greatest pleasure to meet so many special people from the islands.
