00:06Switzerland has never had a monarchy.
00:08But in 2019, at 24 years old, Jonas Lauvener crowned himself king.
00:13Many dismissed the ceremony as a joke and he was depicted as a harmless eccentric.
00:18However, he's starting to rile the authorities over his conquest of land in the Confederation.
00:23Switzerland has a legal loophole.
00:26Under Swiss law, when land is registered as ownerless,
00:28anyone can acquire it for free by writing to the local council to state their claim.
00:33Lauvener started searching land registries and slowly building what he calls his empire.
00:38Today, he has acquired 148 scattered plots across Switzerland,
00:43about 117,000 square metres, all for free.
00:47Not massive, but strategically placed.
00:49That includes 83 sections of road,
00:52which gives him real influence over access in certain areas.
00:55He's even started charging maintenance fees for use of some of these roads.
00:59Lauvener has described it as a digital bloodless campaign.
01:02He also has his special forces of the Lauvener empire.
01:06Authorities are now moving to close the loophole,
01:08calling his expansion an excessive thirst for power.
01:11Lauvener insisted he was not trying to bring instability to Switzerland,
01:14only to show that everybody is a king in their own territory.
