We take a look inside the bag of Matt Wallace to find out what clubs and ball he uses on tour and why.
Transcript
00:00Okay, welcome guys. We are here today at Wentworth on the week of the BMW PGA Championship.
00:06Mr. Matt Wallace. How are you? How are you doing? Good, yeah, thank you. It's a home game for you,
00:09we've just been talking about that off camera, but today we're going to run through your equipment,
00:13what you've got in play this week and kind of what you've been playing throughout the year.
00:17So we'll start at the top end of the bag. What have we got as the big stick? Ping,
00:24the old school Ping, the G430, the LST, 10.8. I always put on the actual degree of loft,
00:35yeah, measured loft. Okay, cool. Whenever I'm using, because I always find I don't like
00:40switching out drivers and or changing too much if I can. So whenever I put something in play,
00:47like this driver, I need to know if I'm going to go to a new one. So like this is
00:52a newer one,
00:52I cracked my driver in Denmark a few weeks ago. So I tried to get something that's
00:59kind of identical. As close as possible. As close as possible, yeah. And obviously,
01:02so non-contracted, you've got a complete open base. Yeah, yeah, yeah. How does that work in
01:07terms of like, obviously you've got the world, you know, the world's your oyster, you can test
01:11whatever you like, but you've got an older product here. Is that just because you loved it so much when
01:15you first tested it? I think, yeah, when I first tested, I remember I came back up here. I was
01:20just,
01:21I was a year out of contract from Callaway for my last deal. And then I was using the Titleist
01:26driver.
01:27And then I won with that in Punta Cana. And then I just struggled because I felt like I was
01:32traveling
01:32around the world a lot, like you say, and playing different places. My swing wasn't as tight as it
01:37probably needed to be. And I was hitting it around the face and I wasn't getting as much of the
01:41consistency out of the shots that I needed. So I went back to something that I've obviously always
01:46liked as a kid and where I felt like I got the most forgiveness from. And Dom from Ping came
01:52up here to Wentworth and we started hitting this driver. And it's not the fastest driver,
01:57I don't believe, but it's the most forgiving for me. Yeah. So I started hitting more fairways,
02:03I gained more confidence and I've stuck with it since. So I've tried the newer model, but the flight
02:10and the spin ratios for me are not as tight as this one. So, yeah.
02:14Cool. Stuck with that then.
02:15Yeah. And you've got the Ventus TR Blue, was it?
02:18Yeah. TR Blue, yeah.
02:19So you've kind of got that mid-kickpoint shaft. Yeah.
02:21Is that a shaft that you've played with for a long time or is that...?
02:23Always been in a Ventus Blue, but just the, like you say, the kickpoint for me
02:28was the part that gave me that launch and the spin numbers and stuff are way more tight than
02:34than the old one that I was using. So that was straight in the bag, that was quite easy for
02:38me.
02:38Awesome. And then we go to Threewood, is it?
02:41Uh, no. Okay. Uh, this is...
02:43Oh, okay. Mini driver. You're a mini driver guy.
02:45You're probably seeing a lot of these, but do you know what? This has been...
02:49I know you're probably going to have a lot of people say it. It's been like
02:52revelation in their bag and stuff. This genuinely has been one of
02:55the best clubs I've probably ever changed to. Okay.
02:58Um, notoriously not a great Threewood player.
03:02Hit it amazing some weeks and then some weeks it can be, the dispersion would be too big.
03:07I'd hit one 280 and then the next one I'd hit it out of the heel and it would be
03:11240.
03:12So it's like too wide a dispersion rate. Notoriously been a great driver off the deck guy.
03:19So I was like, right, why don't we just try and see the mini driver, you know,
03:22because don't have to tee it high off the tee. Always hitting it more towards the bottom,
03:27which is on the lower end of the distance rather than catching it high on the face and
03:30it going miles. Yeah. Um, and yeah, I don't know why. I don't know if it's because course setups now
03:38that we play. Um, that 280 number is kind of an awkward number off a tee. Okay.
03:44This is perfect. And this is the first week I've actually played this golf course with the mini
03:48driver and there's three or four holes where I'm 10 yards further up and it's just made the hole that
03:54much easier. Okay. So, um, yeah, each, each, yeah, each week it's been, it's been great. So awesome.
04:00And so that's a predominantly off the tee club rather than kind of into greens.
04:05Very rarely are we hitting a wood into par fives or anything like that. We have done. Um,
04:09and it is great for that, especially if it's a bit windy and you said you're a good driver.
04:14Yeah. I prefer to hit, um, this off the deck when I know I'm not going to hit it like
04:19high off the toe
04:20or anything that's going to rock it. Yeah. It's always going to be that slightly spinnier sort of
04:24flight if it's off the bottom. So I quite like that idea to it in that concept. Awesome. Yeah.
04:29And you've got the Velocor plus blue in there as well. So similar profile, similar profile,
04:33obviously the newer shaft, they came to me with this and wanted me to test this. And as soon as
04:38I got it,
04:38Adrian at TaylorMade was brilliant, actually dented at the open in travel, dented the top of the face just
04:45in transit, obviously somehow. So I had to switch it straight over and Adrian did a brilliant job for that.
04:50Yeah. Nice. And then I can see we've got a couple of driving irons in the bag.
04:54Yeah. Um, you've kind of previously we've, again, we've talked about this,
04:57but you've kind of been a seven wood player. Yeah. I've done both. I've done. I remember
05:02putting the seven wood in play again, quite a interesting style, make up a bag driver,
05:08mini driver, seven wood. Yeah. Um, but the seven wood nowadays I feel is like an old school five wood.
05:13Um, it's that two 45, two 50 club for me in America when there's not as much wind,
05:20but you're going into the par fives over there where it's firm greens. It's unbelievable. And
05:25the rough is a little bit thicker as well. So major championships, PGA out of thick rough,
05:30you can cut it up out of there. So I wouldn't be using the long irons, the two irons. But
05:35then
05:35when we come back over to, to Europe, this two iron and three iron, the ping, um, again,
05:41in Aventus shaft, like I was using the tight list, uh, the newer tight list model, that's it.
05:49And it was a, it's a smaller head. Yeah. So if you like that sort of like sharper look,
05:55smaller head blends in with the rest of the irons, that's quite nice. I just struggled to look down
06:00at it and go, geez, that ball's looking massive. If I miss this, if I miss this, I'm, I'm toast.
06:07Uh, so I went to the ping, slightly larger profile. Yeah. And it's been mega. Um, and that's the new
06:14one as well. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. This is brilliant. Um, quite large, like looking, but really good
06:21flight. And I have the two and three, so I chop and change between the two. I used the two
06:25iron, um,
06:26um, last week in Cron, um, the three iron was just slightly too high. Okay. Um, for that week
06:33and it was a bit windy and you don't want the ball to stay in the air too long, but
06:36there's a 10 yard
06:37gap. So it's a chop and change between those two. Gotcha. And then we go into, was it the Apex?
06:43Yeah. Yeah. Well, the X-Forge. X-Forge CVs. Yeah. So a few years old now. Very, very old. Yeah.
06:49Uh,
06:49I've got the new set. They sent me the new set to test out. Um, I've got about three sets
06:54of these at home. Okay.
06:56So interesting. I used the, uh, the, the model, the next model, the X-Forge, and I started,
07:04I was struggling to fade the ball. I like to fade my irons mostly. And then I found out that
07:10there
07:10was more weight towards the heel. Okay. So CG plates. Yeah. So, so it was harder to keep the
07:15face open as much, and it wasn't curving to the right. I only found that out maybe six, seven weeks
07:21into using them. So no, it wasn't ideal, but I really liked the look of the clubs and they were
07:27great. But then as soon as I went back to these, I was able to hold the face open a
07:30little bit longer
07:31and it's just where the CG is in the, in the, in the head. So, um, and obviously these are
07:36a few
07:36years old, like we just said, and you said you've got a couple of sets. Yeah. Are you one of
07:39those guys
07:40who buys the heads off eBay to make sure you've got backup? I will, I will do next time if
07:45I need to,
07:46um, but I will test the new set, um, at some point and they look the same. So hopefully they'll
07:52be
07:52the CB ones, um, the new Callaway CBs. So yeah, hopefully they'll be the same. And what shafts are
07:58you playing? This is the Modus. Okay. Are they 130s? Uh, I think so. Yeah. Or one, yeah. 125X maybe.
08:07Yeah.
08:07And then, and that's a shaft that you've historically played or is that something
08:12Funny story. We were in Germany, 2018. Um, and I was using the KVSC taper all black.
08:20Okay. Just purely on visual. Yeah. Absolutely no point looking at it. Nice. Like every other golfer
08:25out there. It's like, I was like, they look sick. I want them. I went and won that week with
08:29them.
08:29Okay. Uh, it was literally that week I put them in and I won with them that week. And then
08:34I realized
08:35I was using like a proper like steel rod and I was given no forgiveness, nothing. Um, and then
08:43when the guys came over to me and started speaking to me about these clubs, these were unbelievable.
08:47They're just really consistent. They're great. Awesome. And then we move. So you go to a Vokey
08:5346 rather than the set pitching wedge. Yeah. And then you blend that obviously through your wedges.
08:58You've got Vokey the whole way through. Yeah. Talk to me about that reason why you would go for a
09:0346.
09:04What about the spin profile? Okay. I, I found I was getting a few jumpers with my pitching wedges,
09:10especially out of the rough. The Vokeys, you just never get a jumper really. Um, I've never had a
09:15jumper with a, with a wedge actually. Just really consistent. Really consistent. And the blend of it
09:20as well. It's, these are the scoring clubs. It's not a smash club. I don't need extra yardage,
09:26nine iron. Sometimes you need to get it to 160, 165 and I can probably do that step on that.
09:32Yeah. And it's a
09:33little bit easier. Whereas the wedge, I'd never be really looking at doing that. So, um, and kind of
09:38four degree increments. And then we jumped to obviously six degrees with the lob wedge, just to
09:42give you a touch more height. Have you been a 58 or guy, or have you kind of always predominantly
09:46played a 60? No, the 50, that's 55. Okay. Um, so yeah, I mean, always been a 60. So if
09:55it's 55, 58,
09:56that's too tight for me. It's just, I've always been, yeah, gapping. Nice. And then the putter,
10:00you've got a really cool head cover on here. Yeah. This is the open head cover, um, that we got,
10:05the giant causeway and a bit of fluff. I'm surprised it's held up to be fair. It's done well. Yeah.
10:10Um,
10:11but then obviously the jailbird, the cruiser. Okay. Um, with the two thumb grip, longer two thumb grip.
10:18And that's a grip you've played for a while now, right? Yeah. Uh, ever since I used the big one
10:23when I first
10:23came out on tour and I was using the prayer grip. Now I'm a, a claw guy and conventional most,
10:28most longer putts. Okay. But I mean, it's visually, it's great. I try, I tried to
10:35use less of the, I don't know, horizontal or vertical line, whichever way you'd use it for my
10:41aiming. Okay. And it would be a little bit more flowy and, and try not to be so perfect. Yeah.
10:46But with the, the aesthetics and the looks of it all, um, it's quite easy to aim up and yeah,
10:51we've always found kind of testing these putters with those horizontal lines as you look down on it,
10:56just so easy to square the face. You don't have to worry about that linear look behind the ball.
11:00So I get like everyone probably out there, I get to trying to be too perfect with my aiming. Yeah.
11:05When actually that's probably the least of your worries, like set up, try and be as close to your
11:11line as you want to, and then put a good move on it. So nice. Yeah. That's my, uh, that's
11:16my bag.
11:16What about golf ball? We'll, we'll end on golf ball. Yeah. Golf ball. Well, I'm a little bit of a,
11:22well, I don't like changing my clubs basically from week to week, um, from a sense of I need
11:28a new dryer if it's not spinning as much or anything. So I started talking to Titleist and
11:31I was like, well, I'll just, I'll just change the ball per week. So if we're somewhere cold and it's
11:37not spinning, I'll go to a spinnier ball. If it's hot and my spinnier ball's spinning too much,
11:42I'll go to one that's slightly less spin. So then I don't have to change anything. Interesting. So I,
11:47I started doing that maybe two years ago. Um, and it's allowed me to be so like stuck in what
11:55I've got. What you're using. I'll change the clubs from what I know works, um, for set,
12:00I've got a core set up between seven wood or the irons. Um, but ball, so like at the PGA
12:05this year,
12:06it was really hot. Um, and just in our longer irons, I was getting no spin with the ball I
12:12was
12:12using. So I went to a spinnier ball and I was able to go into the long par fours and
12:17the par threes
12:18there without going over the back because there's enough spin on the ball. So just purely on a week
12:23to week basis, I can chop and change that way rather than having to change the bag. Awesome.
12:27And then we'll end on apparel obviously. JL. J Lindenburg, yep. Sponsor for a few years now.
12:32Yeah. Looking cool on and off the course. Yeah.
12:34What do you like about the kind of equipment that they offer?
12:36It's the best company I've ever worked with probably. Uh, we do the, obviously as golfers,
12:42we got to do some golf days and, and the work that I do with J Lindenburg, it's easy, it's
12:48fun. Um,
12:50they're always pushing the boundaries. It's never boring. I think it's the best looking stuff out on tour.
12:55Um, and it's great, you know, they look after us tremendously. Everyone who I work with at J Lindenburg
13:02is brilliant. So, uh, long may it continue and it's been going on for a while now. So hopefully when
13:08I'm old and gray, it will still be going. Awesome. Well, thank you very much, everyone.
13:11Matt Wallace. What's in the back? Cheers, man. Thanks, Matt. Cheers, bud.
