00:00ESPN presents the best in bodybuilding from the capital of bodybuilding, Southern California.
00:05You're looking at the city where it was popular before anybody else was doing it.
00:10Bodybuilding in Los Angeles.
00:12Tonight, Gail Rebiam puts her LA championship title on the line as she competes in the tournament of champions.
00:18You'll also see Marina Herbert as she battles back from an injury she sustained in an automobile accident.
00:24Heavyweight Debra Rolfe is here to show us that ballet and bodybuilding can go hand in hand.
00:30And one of the overall favorites, Heather Tristany, 5'6", 126 pounds.
00:34She knows karate, she knows body surfing, and she knows how to win.
00:38They're all here for the tournament of champions in Redondo Beach, California.
00:43Hi, everybody. I'm Joe Fowler along with Corey Everson.
00:46And this is an important event if for only one reason, it's the mecca of bodybuilding, Southern California.
00:52California is where usually things start, whether it's fashion or different sports.
00:57And this is the capital.
00:58Your backyard.
01:00I mean, this is where you train, where you work.
01:02Tremendous athletes come out of California.
01:04It's a way of life here, folks.
01:06I mean, fitness and LA goes hand in hand.
01:09Everyone does it.
01:10Okay, prejudging.
01:11Oh, prejudging.
01:13You've been involved in prejudging before.
01:14Let's show us a videotape of that glorious event, the star-studded event called prejudging.
01:19Actually, there is no glory here.
01:21You just do the best you can in front of hot lights and many judges.
01:24Definitely, and you're really lucky if you can leave stage without getting cramped or dizzy.
01:29Well, now, the judges, you're dealing with several hours, are you not?
01:32Oh, between two and four hours.
01:34Okay.
01:34In that course of time, do you meet the judges?
01:37Are you allowed to talk with them?
01:38Does it have to be afterwards?
01:39You're allowed to speak with them afterwards.
01:41They're very approachable.
01:42If you want to get some constructive criticism, you can go up to the judges and say,
01:45what do I need to work on to improve myself in the future?
01:47But during the contest, really, you have no contact with the judges
01:50because you're on one side of the stage and they're on the other.
01:53And speaking of that stage, as you can see behind us, it's beautiful.
01:57Neon is the theme.
01:58It's gorgeous.
01:59And behind the stage, Taylor Lee will be joining us throughout the broadcast
02:02with some backstage insight.
02:04But first up, we're going to have the mixed pairs for you.
02:07Tonight, from the Tournament of Champions.
02:09Stay with us.
02:12I'm Everson with you from Redondo Beach, California.
02:15We're ready to begin.
02:17Tonight, we'll include mixed pairs and women's competition.
02:20We'll start it with the mixed pairs and on to the stage from the left.
02:44We'll also các bạn in the public space.
02:44Bye.
02:44Bye.
02:49Bye.
02:55Bye.
02:57Bye.
02:57Bye.
03:00Bye.
03:06.
03:36.
04:07.
04:07.
04:07.
04:07.
04:07.
04:07.
04:08.
04:10.
04:10.
04:13.
04:14.
04:44On stage now, Thomas Garces and Christine Oberle.
04:49You know, that towel pump actually works quite well.
04:51What they were doing was they were working their tights up their shoulders and their back.
04:55And let me tell you, that really does work.
04:59Like a tug-of-war.
05:01Yeah.
05:01We're going to see Christine in the women's competition a little bit later in the show.
05:06She's really got long legs.
05:14With couples contests, they're posing, you've got to spend twice as much time on the podium
05:18because each movement has to be timed with the other athletes, and it's much more difficult.
05:25There's a lot of choreography involved.
05:27Even the simplest moves, just the slow movements, the looks, you're doing your head turn.
05:32These two work together at the Hilton Hotel in Anaheim.
05:38Somehow, someway, bodybuilding crept into their conversation.
05:42And now you see them together on stage for all of us to enjoy.
05:50They hold their noses quite long.
05:52Uh-huh.
05:55Is the judges time to assess their physique?
06:05Uh-oh, don't look, Joe.
06:06Can you kiss?
06:08Uh, yes, I guess you can.
06:12Thomas and Christine.
06:14Thomas Garces, Christine Koberle.
06:16Now I know.
06:49Thomas Garces, Christine Koberle.
06:50Thomas Garces, Christine Koberle.
06:51Thomas Garces, Christine Koberle.
06:54Thomas Garces, Christine Koberle.
06:54Thomas Garces, Christine Koberle.
06:54Thomas Garces, Christine Koberle.
06:54Thomas Garces, Christine Koberle.
06:55Thomas Garces, Christine Koberle.
06:56Thomas Garces, Christine Koberle.
06:56Thomas Garces, Christine Koberle.
06:57Thomas Garces, Christine Koberle.
06:57Thomas Garces, Christine Koberle.
06:58Thomas Garces, Christine Koberle.
07:00Thomas Garces, Christine Koberle.
07:00Thomas Garces, Christine Koberle.
07:08Thomas Garces, Christine Koberle.
07:35Steve Rance and Diane Darrell lead the stage.
07:38You can't really fake the judges out, can you?
07:41You have to really have worked together and maneuvered together.
07:44Yeah, but you know what?
07:45Sometimes you can't fake the judges out.
07:47Jeff and I won a championship one year when the music man put the wrong music on
07:51and we made up a routine on stage.
07:53So it still boils down to the best physique wins.
07:56Oh, that's something.
07:57Shane McGolgan and Cheryl Sandy on stage now for you.
08:03Shane's the guy.
08:05Cheryl's the girl.
08:06Oh, and they're going to, I like their starting position.
08:12Shane is not very far from home.
08:15He's from Redondo Beach.
08:16He owns the Pulse Fitness Center here in town.
08:21So there's no excuse.
08:22This man is a workout animal in his own complex.
08:26A very good-looking couple on stage.
08:31You know, their coloring is identical, which I haven't seen from all of the competitors.
08:37Their skin tone?
08:38Yes, the skin tone.
08:39Yes.
08:39That's another thing.
08:40You know, you've got to make sure that your skin tone matches.
08:43But as good as their skin tone looks now, in a week from now, their skin, because it's usually fake
08:47coloring,
08:48is going to look like they've leopards.
08:50It starts peeling off and it looks really bad.
08:53You know, I don't know.
08:54These are beautiful people.
08:55It almost looks natural.
08:57Maybe my eyes deceive me.
08:58This is your business, but I'll tell you, it really looks very natural.
09:01You can't really tell the difference between a natural pan and a fake pan.
09:05Except when the fake rubs off on your light-colored outfit.
09:08Yeah, or later on, in a week from now, when they look really good.
09:13These poses are beautiful.
09:20She's a very beautiful woman.
09:25We haven't seen a couple yet.
09:27It's totally on target, though.
09:30By on target?
09:31You mean?
09:32Totally physically prepared.
09:33I mean, so far they're all a little bit smooth.
09:36I don't know if it's because they don't take couples as seriously as they would in open contests.
09:47Are they making up for it in this performance?
09:49Yes.
09:50It's a beautiful performance.
09:51Wow.
09:53Let me unfog the glasses and we'll take you back to the stage.
09:57Taylor Lee is there.
09:58She'll talk with Shane and Cheryl.
10:02Hey, you two really look at ease with each other out there.
10:06We've been together for a while.
10:08Two years.
10:08Two years now?
10:09Training every day?
10:11Maybe.
10:11Every other day.
10:13Your routine looks nice as well.
10:15Was it professionally choreographed?
10:16We have a girlfriend that helped us, Nicole Cummins, who's the Raiderette.
10:20It's a good thing.
10:22Good job tonight.
10:24Congratulations.
10:26Let's get back on stage.
10:27You're currently competing.
10:29Bruce Taylor and Gigi Ambandos.
10:32Gigi, we will see later on.
10:34Bruce, you've seen quite a bit of in your past.
10:36Yes, I'm quite partial to Bruce.
10:38He was my first training partner that I ever had.
10:41He's a great competitor.
10:44Then I expect great things from him here.
10:46You will.
10:47He's associated with you.
10:48Look at that.
10:49Standing back flip.
10:50Both of them.
10:51That is excellent.
10:53He delivers the good.
10:54He does.
10:55He's great.
10:56You know, he's got his degree in exercise physiology and telephiology.
11:00Look at that body.
11:01He's great.
11:02Now, you've got to be flexible to do that.
11:04Yeah.
11:06This guy can do everything.
11:08And Gigi can, too.
11:09She's been in this for 20 years.
11:12What a great pair they are.
11:14He's so thick.
11:16And he does her standing back flip.
11:19These bodybuilders are not muscle-bound.
11:22That's Bruce Taylor.
11:32He really looks great.
11:34They look great as a couple.
11:40Beautiful.
11:41This is what I like to see in the couple.
11:45One of these poses.
11:50Okay.
11:50I mentioned earlier we haven't seen a couple that totally put it together.
11:54There they are.
11:54Yes.
11:56And some.
11:57Yeah.
11:57And it sticks out, I tell you.
11:59You are so correct.
12:00Just a great routine from Bruce Taylor and Gigi and Bondos.
12:04And the bodies to back it up.
12:05That's right.
12:06And we are coming back with you for the awards.
12:08We'll be giving out.
12:09We'll find out who's number one right after this.
12:16Joe Fowler and Corey Evers are back with you.
12:18Some of the awards have been given out, but we have yet to see who's going to win first.
12:22Corey, I know you like Bruce and Gigi.
12:25I wonder.
12:26Of course I do.
12:28That's just not a personal prejudice.
12:30You just thought they were absolutely going away with us.
12:33They did.
12:34Yep.
12:34I mean, they're so good.
12:36They can compete in professional contracts and score and do very well in them.
12:40Shane McColgan and Cheryl Sandy in second.
12:42And there you see the winners in the blue being congratulated by Cheryl Sandy.
12:46Bruce Taylor and Gigi and Bondos.
12:50They were terrific.
12:51I think they must have known it.
12:53They're not, like, surprised, that's for sure.
12:57Well, they had a chance to watch the others before them.
13:00They knew what they were facing.
13:01They ruled.
13:02These two ruled.
13:04Terrific.
13:04They're going to give us another little sample.
13:06There you go.
13:11I mean, they're choreographed even down to this.
13:13They need to be the same poses as they would.
13:18Well, everything is structured.
13:20Their lives for the last few months have been very structured.
13:24Egg whites and tuna.
13:26Egg whites and tuna.
13:27It paid off.
13:29They're your champions, Bruce Taylor and Gigi and Bondos.
13:32Great champions.
13:33Our camera in the pump-up room shows you the concerted effort of lightweights, middleweights, and heavyweights
13:39getting ready for the continuation of our competition.
13:41Let's go to Taylor Lee with Bruce and Gigi.
13:44And how do you choose a partner that you decide you want to spend practically the rest of your life
13:48with?
13:50Well, I saw Gigi in a bodybuilding show, and I said, let's do mixed pairs.
13:57So we gave it a shot.
13:58Okay.
13:59Good deal.
13:59Well, you've got some nice trophies there to show for it.
14:01Yeah, congratulations to you, too.
14:03Bye-bye.
14:06Thank you very much, Taylor Lee.
14:08We are now underway in the lightweight division, and already into her routine is Carla Bloom.
14:1323 years old.
14:14She's 5'3", 123 pounds, Corey.
14:17What a beautiful stage, too, then, Sue.
14:20I would suspect the level of competition is going to be above average in this competition.
14:25For a simple reason, most of these competitors are from the Southern California area, which is a hot set.
14:29It is a hot set.
14:30I mean, it seems like a lot of people from Southern California are already about three years in advance than
14:35most other athletes in bodybuilding.
14:37All right, Carla.
14:38This is a great routine.
14:39She's got a lot of...
14:42But you don't like it when they stay low too long, do you?
14:45Not really, because if you're a judge and you're sitting down on a low table, you can't really see the
14:49athlete when you're down.
14:50She could be a little bit more defined.
14:52She's a little bit smooth.
14:54But she really has got a beautiful routine.
14:56It's different.
14:57I've never seen anything like it.
14:59There goes Carla.
15:00And now you're taking a look at the pump-up room.
15:02We have plenty more from the lightweight division that are getting ready to hop up on the stage.
15:07In fact, the fourth place in prejudging, Eva Wagmeister, 35 years old.
15:13She's on the stage now, and she, too, from Southern California, Marina Del Rey, 5'3", 103 pounds.
15:22Pretty subtle.
15:23She's a little tiny girl, isn't she?
15:25Out of Gold's Gym, Venice Beach.
15:29Where she's a personal trainer.
15:33And a former aerobics instructor.
15:35But originally, this lady's from Argentina.
15:39That's where she attended college.
15:42Now, see if you can spot the ballet in her background.
15:46Ballet and modern dance.
15:47You're going to see a lively routine here.
15:49Yeah, you can tell already.
15:57She's really slight.
15:58She's got a very good definition of her muscles, but she needs to put on a little bit more thickness
16:02in there.
16:03Well, she's got a good start.
16:08Kickboxer, too.
16:10Throw a little bit of that in there.
16:12Maybe she will.
16:20Holding her poses with the beat of the music.
16:23And a very energetic routine.
16:25Good choice of music.
16:26All right.
16:28Eva Wagmeister leaves the stage.
16:30We're off to a horrific start.
16:32It's lively here, Tori.
16:33It is.
16:34The third ranked in pre-judging is Beba Furhat.
16:37She's 25 years old from Van Nuys, California.
16:41Starts right there on the board.
16:43She has a great routine so far.
16:45Well, they're so creative.
16:47I mean, you know, they're finding ways to come up with something a little better than the one before.
16:51Right.
16:52And there's unlimited ways you can show muscle definition.
16:56You don't have to do a typical bicep pose or a lap spread to show it.
17:03All these girls are in really good shape, too.
17:06Beba's 5'3", 110 pounds.
17:09Another member of the Gold Gym family, formerly from France, where she danced.
17:15A dancer from France.
17:17We have a lot of dancers in today's contest.
17:19I think that's one advantage is if you're a dancer, you're usually not very intimidated and afraid to be out
17:30in front of people.
17:32She's got tremendous definition in her back.
17:44She's got a little more muscle than the previous athlete.
17:50Sure does.
17:54Now, mixed into this routine, she's having to show a specific number of body parts, and there is something set
18:01there.
18:02It looks like there's a lot of variables, but...
18:05Yeah.
18:05In between her little dance moves and her transitions, she's flexing each one of her biceps.
18:10Right now, she's doing her legs, her hamstrings, her tricep, her shoulder.
18:13There's her back, and also her back thigh, or leg biceps.
18:18Terrific.
18:19Beautiful routine.
18:20Deba Furhat from Van Nuys, California.
18:25Now, next up, the second in pre-judging, Dawn Taylor, hits the stage.
18:35You know, you were talking about how they're bringing dance into it.
18:39I think it's a matter of, these ladies have been watching body, but they've been watching you, for that matter,
18:44for the last few years, and they're just trying to top this.
18:47They're just trying to throw some more creativity into it.
18:50Yeah, but in every female athlete that we've seen so far, they put it into their own style, and it
18:57becomes their stylized posing technique, which is very important.
19:02People start to recognize you by your posing, by your posing style.
19:09Dawn was a little bit slower than Deba's was, which is fine, it's just her style.
19:16I like her lats.
19:19I'm sure you like more of that, too.
19:21No, I respect what she goes through.
19:24There's an abdominal side.
19:26She's got very nice shape in the tree.
19:34Last spread.
19:36All right, Dawn Taylor leads the stage, completes her routine, and Taylor Lee's going to talk to me.
19:42Dawn, tell me who you work out with every day.
19:44Oh, I train with my boyfriend, Scott, and we train real hard.
19:48I've been doing it for about three years now here in California.
19:51How many hours a day?
19:52Uh, about three or four, I'd say, lately.
19:55Good deal.
19:55You look good out there.
19:56Thanks a lot.
19:58Thank you, ladies.
19:59The top-ranked lightweight comes your way next from the Tournament of Champions.
20:03Stay with us.
20:09Back in our competition, that could be Holland.
20:12That could be a used car lot in Southern California.
20:15The lights at the nighttime in Southern California.
20:18We are at Redondo Beach.
20:19Joe Fowler and Corey Everson.
20:21And now, the top-ranked of the lightweight, Gail Rebian.
20:2540 years old, Corey.
20:27She's from Marina Del Rey, right next door.
20:30She's 5'114 pounds.
20:34Well, it's obvious right off the bat why she won.
20:37She's got the most amount of thickness and definitions and balance with any of the lightweight.
20:42Wow, you know why, honey?
20:43I respect her so much.
20:45Because this lady never exercised until she was 33 years old.
20:50Isn't that unbelievable?
20:51And here she is among the best in your class.
20:54See, people don't understand.
20:55You can start bodybuilding at any age.
20:57And at any age, you're going to make benefits from it.
20:59It doesn't matter if you're 80 years old.
21:00You'll still benefit from it.
21:01There, you're looking at an incentive right there on the stage.
21:04The lady won the Los Angeles Bodybuilding Championship.
21:07She has exceptional calves.
21:09Let me see you from a front shot.
21:11She's got beautiful calves.
21:13We've got all kinds of good camera angles on tonight.
21:18Tracking every angle.
21:19There's the back.
21:20She's a beautician.
21:22That explains beautiful hair.
21:23Yeah.
21:24It really does.
21:25She's not as fluent as a poser as some of the other athletes, but her body is about the rest
21:30of them.
21:30Well, let's have a word with her.
21:31Taylor Lee backstage to talk with Gail Rebian.
21:35Gail, tell me a story about a bicycle and bodybuilding.
21:38I've got to hear this.
21:39I went to buy a bicycle, and there was this little gym next door, and I was looking in the
21:43window,
21:43and I stopped in and asked them if they could teach me how to do this.
21:47And this guy said, sure.
21:48And I thought it was a joke.
21:49And he gave me a routine, and I've been training seven days a week, seven years for seven days a
21:54week since.
21:54You did well.
21:55The audience loves you.
21:56Thanks.
21:57Thank you, ladies.
21:58The middleweights are already on stage.
22:00In fact, Christine Coberly is on stage.
22:02I want you to add your – do you have a calculator?
22:04Seven years, seven days a week.
22:06Yeah.
22:07That's what she was saying.
22:08Christine is 31 years old, 5'6", 628 pounds.
22:13We saw her a little earlier in the mixed pairs, where she plays fourth with Thomas Garfield.
22:18She has a lot of control on stage.
22:21Moves very nice.
22:22A former gymnast.
22:23That's why.
22:25Oh, yeah.
22:26There it is.
22:29You know, one of the things people think that bodybuilders are narcissistic, and actually we're not.
22:34I mean –
22:34Well, you spend a lot of time looking at yourselves in a mirror.
22:37Yeah, but it's all constructive.
22:39I mean, who wants to spend two hours a day in the gym and diet properly and do aerobics and
22:44not look good?
22:45I mean, of course you're going to do it to make yourself look better.
22:49But it's not a conceited love of yourself.
22:53It's just wanting to improve your physique.
22:55And what you have to put up with publicly.
22:58I mean, you can't go anywhere without –
23:00That's true.
23:01A lot of long-sleeved shirts.
23:03That's a curse and a blessing, huh?
23:06Christine on the stage now.
23:10Trained for 14 years.
23:14Training since she was in high school.
23:15Really a nice routine.
23:17She carries a little bit too much body fat in her lower body,
23:20which is the typical area where most women do carry too much body fat.
23:25So what's the exercise for that?
23:27Well, it's long-term exercise.
23:28There's not one single exercise, squatting and leg extensions.
23:31They're all good exercises for your legs.
23:33But it's – you do it consistently and frequently for a long period of time.
23:38It's a hard area to hone down for women.
23:45That's a beautiful color.
23:51Very dramatic with her routine.
23:53Yeah.
23:54Having another year of her training, she'll be way up there.
23:57Well, she's moving up.
23:58She was ranked fifth in three, judging.
24:00There's your pump-up room.
24:02Not too much chit-chat going on back there.
24:04No.
24:05Not a nerve.
24:06Not a nerve.
24:07A lot of concentration on what your routine's going to be like.
24:10You're really focused.
24:11But a vital part of preparing for being right there on stage.
24:16Yeah.
24:16Jacqueline Brewer is up.
24:18She's 25, 5'3", 118 pounds from Ensenadas, California.
24:23And she plays fourth.
24:26Beautiful lady.
24:27One of the things that's unusual about bodybuilding is the only sport where what you do in training has nothing
24:33to do with what you do in conscious shape.
24:37I mean, look what they're doing now.
24:38They're posing.
24:39They don't have any dumbbells and barbells with them.
24:41And that's what your whole training is.
24:42Look at swimming.
24:43You're in the pool, and you compete in the pool.
24:45And then if you're on the court, you're practicing on the court, and you compete on the court.
24:49Gymnastics.
24:50You practice on the uneven bars, you compete on the uneven bars.
24:53But bodybuilding is something totally unusual.
24:56You practice in the gym, but you compete on stage.
24:59And it's perfect sense for me.
25:01I'll buy that.
25:04Jacqueline might have the same problem Christine had.
25:06You mentioned lower body.
25:07Yeah.
25:08She did another shot there.
25:09Yeah, absolutely.
25:10Once again, I'm totally impressed with this contest with the posing style.
25:15And all these women are advanced posers.
25:18They're beautiful posers.
25:20Jacqueline Brewer bids the fans adieu.
25:23And we've got more from the middleweights coming your way when we come back to the Tournament of Champions.
25:29Stay with us.
25:36That's Hollywood, folks.
25:37It's Pantagis Theater, Hollywood Boulevard.
25:41We're in the shadows of Hollywood at Redondo Beach.
25:43Joe Fowler and Corey Everson coming at you with more of the Tournament of Champions.
25:48We're in the middleweight division.
25:50On the stage now, Marina Herbert.
25:5225 years old, 5'6", 119 pounds.
25:57In pre-judging, she finished third.
26:00Then she chooses to show us what you would call her strength, maybe, when you start off showing the back.
26:04Yeah, sometimes you like to smack the judges in your best body part first.
26:09What I noticed first is her music.
26:11Right away, that set me in a certain mood.
26:13The music in flash now is excellent music.
26:20Very, very dark.
26:22Yeah.
26:22Very, very dark.
26:24And mind you, that hand is probably not natural.
26:26Most of the athletes use sort of a paint-on hand to save their skin from being in the fun
26:31too much.
26:32She's originally from England.
26:33She didn't get it over there.
26:34That's for sure.
26:36In fact, she just received American citizenship.
26:41She started bodybuilding when she was in a car accident and started rehabilitation and became more and more advanced into
26:49bodybuilding and ended up competing.
26:52Marina Herbert ends her routine and makes way for Gigi Ambandos, who will be next, we saw in mixed pairs,
26:57but now let's meet Gigi off the stage.
27:01My main reason for getting involved in the sport of bodybuilding was after 20 years of gymnastics and people asking
27:07me if I was a bodybuilder and me saying no, I finally decided to get involved with the sport.
27:12And now when they ask me, I can say yes.
27:15The many years of dedication that gymnastics took for me at a young age, the diet and everything will lay
27:24a good foundation for my bodybuilding now.
27:27I feel women's bodybuilding has taken a change for the better.
27:30I feel we're being more accepted in the bodybuilding world itself and taken more seriously now.
27:35And also the general public seems to accept us too.
27:39Our most important feature though is to stay feminine.
27:42And I feel that by the way I work out and the way I feel when I'm working out, femininity
27:48will be the key factor in keeping women's bodybuilding alive.
27:55After putting all those hours in the gym, one of the most hardest things for a bodybuilder to do is
28:00get up on stage, perform their routine.
28:03I feel more comfortable though when I'm in front of that audience because I'm an entertainer at heart.
28:08And I like to have fun with it and show the audience and let them have fun with my routine
28:13too.
28:18My goal in bodybuilding is to take my competition and my physique as far as I can, drug free.
28:23I'd like to show the audience and the public that bodybuilding can be a mainstream sport too.
28:29I'd also like to show them that it's entertaining and I think I can do that through my posing routine.
28:36Well, now we know a little bit more about Gigi.
28:38Let's watch her in action.
28:40She's 24 years old, 5'4", 120 pounds.
28:44I like to start.
28:46Joe!
28:46What?
28:47No, I like the dramatic pose.
28:49Look at this.
28:49This is beautiful.
28:51Absolutely beautiful.
28:52Oh, she has a beautiful body to go along with it.
28:57She looks like a very seasoned, advanced athlete up there.
29:0120 years as a gymnast.
29:03Gymnasts have got great potential for bodybuilding because when you compete in gymnastics, you're using every single muscle group.
29:10A lot of abdominal work, back, left, legs.
29:13But bodybuilders can't be cheap.
29:16I mean, you bulk.
29:18Don't you lose coordination?
29:19Did you just see that?
29:19I saw that.
29:20An aerial cartwheel on stage.
29:21She just got me wrong.
29:22Gigi, I'm sorry.
29:24Excellent.
29:24That really was beautiful.
29:26She's a beautiful dancer.
29:27So how many points do you get for that?
29:29Oh, about 5,000.
29:30Uh-huh.
29:31You're still looking at the muscle mass?
29:33Yeah.
29:34Right.
29:34I mean, even though she's doing a lot of fancy moves, the number one thing they're looking at is the
29:38symmetry, the shape, the proportion, and the muscle on her frame.
29:41And she's really got a nice frame.
29:44She moves just magnificently.
29:48From the San Diego area.
29:51One of the things Gigi's done very well is she's prepared herself not only for tampons, her cam, but her
29:57suit fits great.
29:59And I know how hard it is to find a suit that fits right because everybody is a different size,
30:03and sometimes suits don't like to stay put.
30:06Well, you have to have them made to order sometimes, huh?
30:08Yeah, and actually, sometimes girls even sort of spray glue them on so that they stay put.
30:13Ah, a trick.
30:14It is.
30:14She's really using it.
30:15She's great.
30:16She is.
30:17She's so great.
30:18Excellent.
30:18The gymnast, now the bodybuilder, Gigi Amanda from San Diego.
30:24She was ranked second in three judging, so that means we've got one more coming up in the middleweight as
30:29you take another look at the pump-up room.
30:31And all we have left are the heavyweights.
30:34People look forward to that.
30:35They will be up on the stage shortly, but right now heading for the stage is the top-ranked in
30:41the middleweight, Peggy Lindsay.
30:4433 years old.
30:47The entrance.
30:47And she has a tough act to follow.
30:49Let me tell you, that's not fun.
30:535'4", 119 pounds.
30:56Watch how she works with this beautiful music.
31:01She's from San Diego.
31:02Works out of the Gold's Gym.
31:05Once again, a totally different style than what Gigi had.
31:09Real slow and controlled.
31:11More power for him.
31:14Much more classical music.
31:22It's all a matter of preference on which type of clothing you like better.
31:27I happen to enjoy both of them.
31:29It's a nice and nice spread.
31:33Well, this isn't the kind that's going to get you up and clapping, but this is certainly beautiful.
31:37Yeah.
31:37I think it goes well with the routine she's chosen.
31:39This is a lady who designed wedding dresses.
31:42I mean, she's multi-talented.
31:45She's a vice chairperson of MPC, women's representative, used to be in the army in Europe.
31:52So she knows discipline.
31:54I wouldn't talk back to Sergeant Lindsay.
31:57There's a beautiful poem.
31:59See the victorious muffle in the thigh?
32:01All of her muscles are very well separated.
32:09Very dramatic.
32:11You're well at a ballet.
32:13Yeah.
32:13Absolutely.
32:15Outstanding.
32:15Beautiful.
32:16Peggy Lindsay.
32:18I know Taylor Lee is backstage.
32:20I'd like to hear more from Peggy.
32:21Let's see if she can grab Miss Lindsay.
32:25Peggy, either everybody in the audience loved your routine or you had a lot of fans out there.
32:28Which one?
32:29Everybody from San Diego.
32:31My husband was out there.
32:32People from the gym.
32:33A lot of good people.
32:34They helped me a lot through the year.
32:36Everybody was standing up and cheering for you.
32:38Yes, it felt very good.
32:40It felt very good.
32:41Congratulations.
32:43Stay where you are.
32:44We are going to Corey's division.
32:46The heavyweight.
32:47Hey.
32:47Something up next.
32:54Times Square has its neon.
32:56Hollywood has its version.
32:58And we've got our neon right here on stage at Redondo Beach.
33:01Joe Fowler and Corey Everson, strap yourselves in because the heavyweights are ready to begin.
33:06Let's go back up on stage.
33:09Number five is prejudging.
33:11Sydney Lubickson.
33:12She's coming on strong.
33:1324 years old.
33:145'8".
33:15140 pounds.
33:19Heavyweight is 125 pounds and older, so she's a real heavyweight.
33:24Like me.
33:24Super heavyweight.
33:25That's right.
33:26What do you compete at?
33:27How about telling?
33:28Shut up.
33:28What?
33:28140, 800?
33:29Done your business.
33:30Okay.
33:31Wow.
33:31She's sensitive tonight, folks.
33:34She wears her hair down like this.
33:36Very cute haircut.
33:37Very cute smile.
33:39She's having trouble with her positioning, though, right here.
33:42Yeah.
33:42It's probably a little bit of nerve.
33:44Everybody goes through that, too.
33:46No matter how confident you look on stage, you still are nervous.
33:49Let me be.
33:50I can guarantee that.
33:51You feel like you're shaking and you're really nervous, but really from where the judges
33:54are standing, they can't see them.
33:56Now, the legs are thick, and I suppose that has something to do with her cycling.
34:01Seven years, she's been a competitive cyclist.
34:03Oh, cyclists have great legs.
34:05And there go the six shooters, and Cindy Lubickson, with her little sign language to the audience,
34:12they love her here, don't they?
34:13Yeah, she's great.
34:14She leaves the stage, and now the fans are going to be treated to Deborah Rolfe, who
34:20finished fourth in Pre-Judging.
34:22Again, another interesting entrance.
34:24They don't just stand there and start.
34:26They bring themselves on stage with flair and style.
34:29Yeah, and all the entrances have been different so far.
34:3231 years old, 5'4", 130 pounds.
34:37Southern California, Orange County, Gold's Gym.
34:42She was a former ballet dancer.
34:47You know, it's a lot easier for those ballet people to see.
34:52Well, I like her incentive to get involved with bodybuilding.
34:55She started at the age of 24 to fight gravity.
34:59Okay?
35:01That's a good incentive.
35:02And that's probably the age where gravity starts to affect most people, too.
35:08Do you believe that she found out after a contest, she found out she was six weeks pregnant?
35:12She thought that was muscle mass, huh?
35:16Surprise, Deborah.
35:23What's her strength?
35:25Her strength is her upper body.
35:26She, too, carries a little bit too much weight in her lower leg,
35:30and that's the gravity that she's fighting.
35:32But she's doing a good job of it.
35:34She really looks good.
35:36Her upper body's great.
35:39You notice she's posing most upper body poses,
35:42and she's taking the attention away from her legs.
35:45And she can just get them a little more defined,
35:46because the muscle is there.
35:48You can see it.
35:52Airline attendant, Deborah Rolfe.
35:56You're right, she's definitely emphasizing the upper body.
35:59Uh-huh.
36:02So if you were coaching her, you'd tell her, let's work on the lower.
36:05Let's do left leg extensions, okay?
36:07Same way she entered, she leaves.
36:09She's going to go back and talk now with Taylor Lee.
36:12Deborah, I overheard you saying this is a crazy sport.
36:15Yeah, real crazy.
36:16And why is that?
36:17It just, it takes everything you've got.
36:19You know, it takes all your time, all your money.
36:22It takes everything.
36:23So why would you choose this sport over something else like checker playing?
36:26I don't know.
36:27Well, um, it's a lot of fun, but, uh, it's totally consuming.
36:32I think it'll be tough, maybe part crazy to do this very long.
36:37Crazy as it is, you did a good job.
36:40I'm kind of partially checker playing.
36:43Mrs. Taylor, thank you.
36:45Are you a heavyweight checker player?
36:46I'm a champion of champions.
36:48Already on stage, Joyce Douglas, 27 years old.
36:52She's 5'8", 143 pounds.
36:56Placed third in pre-judging.
36:58Again, another from Southern California.
37:00She's from San Diego.
37:08She's got pretty good balance, you know, from her upper body to her lower body.
37:12She doesn't have the problem of having too much body fat in one area or the other.
37:18140c pounds is getting up there, too.
37:20Yes.
37:23She's a nice, small waist.
37:26You mentioned in an earlier show something about joints, small joints can help.
37:31Yes.
37:31Yes, because it gives the illusion of having a larger muscle.
37:34If you have a bigger joint, like in your knee, a lot of women have big knee joints,
37:38because women structurally have that.
37:41And that means that you have to have a lot larger muscle to make the joint look smaller.
37:46A small joint makes the muscle look a lot more voluminous.
37:54And there's nothing you can do for the fact that you've joined.
38:01And there's nothing you can do for the fact that you've joined.
38:02She's in very good condition.
38:07One of many here who are going to try to improve and move on.
38:11We're on the tournament of champions, but they want to move on to the national level,
38:15and eventually some of them pro.
38:17Uh-huh.
38:17Some treat this as a hobby.
38:19Some treat it very seriously.
38:21Joyce Douglas leads the stage.
38:24We'll be back with a continuation of the heavyweights right after this.
38:36How about a competition at the Hollywood Bowl one day?
38:39That is one beautiful venue.
38:42And that's been the scene and site of many a show.
38:45Not quite this kind of show, though.
38:48Joe Fowler and Corey Ederson being treated to the heavyweights.
38:51Denise Baldwin is on the stage.
38:55In bed, 144 and a half.
38:58Denise's second.
39:01She's also big.
39:02You can see in the face two big bones.
39:04Yeah.
39:05You know, I almost, you know, just briefly seeing her,
39:08I almost think that Joyce should have been second.
39:11She's a little bit more honed down.
39:13You see a lot of body fat in Denise's lower body, and Joyce doesn't have that.
39:18Well, in these next few seconds, we'll see what Denise can do to prove that she deserves second.
39:24And they both have great symmetry and shape.
39:27Well, she said, you know, everybody in this contest has been a great pose in her.
39:32But Denise is big.
39:33She's obviously ripped.
39:34How strong would somebody like this be?
39:36Strength is hard to tell, because strength is a matter of leverage.
39:40Just because you've got big muscles doesn't mean you're stronger than a smaller person.
39:45It's all a matter of leverage.
39:46Your arm length or your leg length.
39:48People with short arms can bench press more than a person with long length.
39:51But what's the old saying, can you bench press your own weight?
39:54I mean, the larger you are, I would think, the more you can lift, no?
39:58No, not true.
39:58In fact, one out of a thousand men can bench press their body weight.
40:03And in the bodybuilding world, it's different, but that's an average.
40:06There goes Denise.
40:08Coming up next, the top rank, Heather Tristany.
40:10But let's meet her first.
40:12I got into bodybuilding as a result of meeting my husband about seven and a half years ago.
40:18And he provided a lot of encouragement and motivation
40:20and felt that I really had a lot of potential to do well into the sport.
40:25I've always been athletically inclined, so I was very interested in getting into the sport anyway.
40:30And I really enjoy doing it.
40:32It's something that we can do together, and we always help one another.
40:36And I'll probably continue to do it for a long time.
40:39One thing that I find disappointing and frustrating about bodybuilding
40:43is the way that the mass media tends to portray the bodybuilder,
40:47in particular the female bodybuilder.
40:49It seems to me that whenever I see an athlete on television,
40:53immediately the subject of steroids or steroid abuse comes up.
40:57And I find that the honest truth is that it takes years of hard work, diet,
41:03you need to be knowledgeable, and above all, lots and lots of training.
41:16As far as my training goes, there's nothing that I do that is haphazard.
41:20Everything that I do in my training is thoroughly planned out beforehand.
41:25But when I come to the gym, I don't want to have to waste time and make my workouts worthwhile.
41:30So, therefore, before I come to the gym, I plan my workouts and everything that I'm going to do for
41:35the evening.
41:36Plus, in addition, my time is limited.
41:38When I come into the gym, I know I'm going to get a good workout and do a good job.
41:44I see a promising and exciting future for female bodybuilding.
41:48And I hope that I can provide a positive image for women in the sport to encourage them to take
41:53up bodybuilding,
41:54because you can be strong yet feminine at the same time.
42:00One-on-one with Heather Tristany.
42:02Now let's watch her on the stage.
42:04But, Corey, you know Heather, don't you?
42:06Yes.
42:06She trains at Big Bucks gym with me.
42:0929 years old, 5'6", 126 pounds.
42:13That's kind of light heavy, huh?
42:15Yeah, it is.
42:15But look at the density of her muscle.
42:18Heather, let me tell you, is the strongest female athlete to roam the planet.
42:22But I swear, I've seen her do calf raises with 400 pounds.
42:27I've seen her do arm curls with 135 pounds.
42:29In fact, she uses the weight, my heavy set is her warm-up weight, believe it or not.
42:34She is a strong, strong girl.
42:37And she's always in shape.
42:39I've never seen her fat, and she's always perfect.
42:41She comes to the gym dressed in a perfect matching little outfit.
42:45I look like a slob.
42:47She looks great.
42:48She's really a good athlete.
42:49And she's a chauvin.
42:50Look at her.
42:51And a great personality, too.
42:53She was involved in tons of different sports, in track and field, in baseball, in body surfing.
42:59She used to live in Hawaii.
43:00She's now into karate.
43:03We're going to see her in the overall pose down as well.
43:06What's this 4% body fat?
43:08I don't believe that.
43:09Body fat is hard to measure.
43:12You know, 4% is getting pretty lean, pretty much to an unhealthy state.
43:16But it's very hard to measure.
43:17All right, Heather Tristany leads the stage, and we'll be back with more.
43:21In fact, the pose down.
43:23You've been waiting for it.
43:24It's next.
43:24Stay with us.
43:31Back at Redondo Beach, we join the pose down in progress.
43:34On the stage, three ladies vying for the championship in the Tournament of Champions.
43:38From left to right, you see the lightweight winner, Gail Rivian.
43:42In the middle, Peggy Lindsay, the middleweight champion.
43:45And you just saw her before the break, Heather Tristany, the winner of the heavyweight.
43:50Corey?
43:51I know who's going to win.
43:53Your buddy?
43:53Yeah, I think Heather's going to take it because she's so complete.
43:57Her legs are defined.
43:58Her upper body's defined.
43:59Some of the other girls aren't quite defined in their legs, and that's hard to get.
44:03Okay, you see Gail Rivian.
44:04Here's Peggy Lindsay.
44:05She's certainly qualified.
44:08And there's Heather.
44:11I mean, that's what ripped me, because what you're looking at right there.
44:17Full muscle.
44:18She's not dehydrated at all.
44:22This is when the athletes compare with each other.
44:25Why don't you compare them for us, then, as you see them?
44:27You see there, Gail.
44:28Uh-huh.
44:29I know there's different sizes, but you're still looking at muscle groups, right?
44:33Yeah, it's just the quality of the muscle and a lot of hard years of training.
44:36You can just see how she's got a lot denser, thicker muscle without being dehydrated or stringy.
44:41A lot of times when a girl's diet, they get stringy.
44:43And really, none of these three are stringy at all.
44:47Your vascularity improves.
44:49You see a lot of veins in these girls' arms.
44:51If you're body fat is a little bit, your vascularity shows a little bit more.
44:56At this point, the girls can do any pose that they want.
44:59So normally what you do is you show your strong points, and you keep blasting the judges with your strong
45:04points.
45:04If you've got great legs, you keep collecting your legs at them.
45:07As Peggy's doing right now.
45:08Yeah.
45:09On the left of the screen.
45:14Okay.
45:15I think they're ready.
45:19The audience is enjoying it.
45:21They really get a kick out of this segment of this competition, don't they?
45:25Yeah, this is the best part.
45:27Gail, Peggy, and Heather from left to right.
45:29Who's going to win it?
45:33Well, you know my bet.
45:36Heather!
45:37Heather!
45:38Yeah.
45:39A little of the fans' hustle, too.
45:41No surprise.
45:42It's four-picked Heather Triskanie to win it, and she does win it for the very reason she listed.
45:46And you know, this is what's in the very first contest.
45:48Is that right?
45:49Yes.
45:50Well, you're going to have to give her some grief when you see her back in the gym, huh?
45:53I am.
45:53I'm going to slap her around.
45:54National champion Sean Reed a few years ago.
45:57He's going to lift her hand, and that trophy's as far as Sean.
46:01Excellent.
46:02That would be great.
46:04Heather Triskanie.
46:10Getting some shots.
46:12We'll see that picture in the publication in the near future.
46:17Well, we're going to want to hear from Heather, aren't we?
46:19Yeah.
46:19We're going to come back and have a backstage interview with Heather Triskanie right after this timeout.
46:27Welcome back to the Tournament of Champions.
46:28Heather Triskanie is heading backstage.
46:30We're going to work.
