00:17This is my, my inspiration.
00:34What made me hold on, what has saved my life, is children.
00:43Because being a celebrity and then becoming an icon, like an international phenomenon,
00:49you see how vindictive man can be, how cruel, how abusive, how judgmental.
00:58But children represent honesty, just a pure innocence.
01:05And I'm in love with innocence.
01:10That's what I'm in love with.
01:22The number one artist in the world!
01:35That level of mega stardom is not healthy.
01:40People are not gods.
01:49Tonight, Jackson is wanted by police of multiple felony counts of child molestation.
01:57The Jackson machine just keeps right on rolling.
02:01Let's watch.
02:27Sony Corporation believes it has a profitable partner
02:31and Michael Jackson. Together, they could make a billion dollars.
02:35As NBC's Mike Jensen reports tonight, teach your kids to sing.
02:49It's the kind of contract that takes your breath away.
02:52A projected $1 billion for six Michael Jackson albums,
02:56plus feature films, videos, and video games.
03:01Michael, in the 1980s, you had the largest selling album in history with Thriller.
03:07Now, with Dangerous, you've given us the fastest selling album of your career.
03:12We're prouder than ever to have you part of the Sony Music family.
03:15The thrilling fact is that the best is definitely yet to come.
03:23When I joined Sony, Michael Jackson was the biggest star in the world.
03:28He was the guy.
03:30I don't know any other way to describe it.
03:32I mean, we all lived through it.
03:34The Michael Jackson World Tour is on the road again.
03:40It was incredibly exciting.
03:43They're selling out stadiums, making record money.
03:46It was the franchise.
03:47I mean, let's be honest.
03:51We are all in the business of succeeding.
03:54And when you're working in a company like Sony Music,
03:58you want a Michael Jackson to succeed.
04:08My name is Rosabelle Smith.
04:10And for 31 years, I was employed by the Los Angeles Police Department.
04:17In 1993, while working juvenile division of the LAPD,
04:21I was working the Sexually Exploited Child Unit.
04:23I was advised by my supervisor, who was the officer in charge of the unit,
04:27that a case had come in involving a young boy who was 13 years of age
04:33and that the perpetrator was Michael Jackson.
04:37I was a little in disbelief that it was Michael Jackson doing this
04:43because I grew up watching Michael Jackson,
04:46you know, the Jackson 5 cartoons when I was a kid,
04:49and I really enjoyed his music.
04:56But we had a job to do, and that job was to go out
04:59and just handle it just like any other case at that time.
05:05Our role was to find out if Mr. Jackson
05:10had committed the crime of sexual molestation against children.
05:16And on the same token,
05:17we had to find out if the children,
05:22they were telling the truth.
05:27We had to interview the victim.
05:35The victim had actually met Michael Jackson at a restaurant
05:39who was very, very little.
05:42Then years later,
05:44that relationship grew and they began to visit each other.
05:50The victim was alleging that
05:53Michael would oftentimes rub his body against his body.
05:58He alleged that Michael Jackson fondled to him
06:02and masturbated him.
06:05He alleged that Michael liked to have his nipples
06:10rubbed, squeezed, kissing.
06:14Then that graduated to oral copulation.
06:17They bathed together
06:18and to the point where eventually
06:21Michael Jackson consumed his semen.
06:33We had heard on the grapevine
06:34that there were these allegations circulating.
06:40And it was a shock to everybody.
06:43Yeah, we knew he was hanging with kids,
06:45but I saw him hang with the kids
06:47and I saw that it was completely innocent.
06:51I saw he was playing games with them.
06:53I saw the kids wanting to hang with him.
07:00I really hoped the allegations weren't true.
07:05The feeling was trying to contain it.
07:09Obviously, we were thinking of, you know,
07:11the immediate impact on the tour
07:13because you got to keep the business going,
07:15the tour going, the album sales, everything,
07:18and the impact of that.
07:18So it was pretty, it was pretty tense.
07:21We went into crisis mode,
07:22both with our team and the PR team.
07:27But ultimately, the story was so huge,
07:30it was going to get out no matter what we did.
07:33There was no stopping it.
07:39In Southern California,
07:41the press, police, lawyers, and private investigators
07:43are in orbit tonight
07:45over an investigation of child abuse allegations
07:47involving superstar Michael Jackson.
07:49There's still no comment from Michael Jackson this morning,
07:52and Los Angeles police aren't saying much,
07:55but they have confirmed reports
07:57of a criminal investigation of the pop superstar.
08:00All hell broke loose.
08:01Television station KNBC in Los Angeles
08:04first broke the story last night
08:06saying that a mother had alleged
08:07Jackson abused her child.
08:09August 17th, the Los Angeles Police Department
08:12initiated a criminal investigation
08:15of entertainer Michael Jackson.
08:18Every news channel, every hour,
08:21the top story was Michael Jackson.
08:23Confidential documents obtained by NBC News
08:26quoted the boy's reference to acts of oral sex
08:28and masturbation.
08:30The allegations now surfacing
08:31are ugly enough to shatter any icon's image.
08:34Kids everywhere are talking about
08:36the scandalous accusations,
08:38hoping they're not true.
08:41Has Michael Jackson ever molested a child,
08:44ever done anything improper with a child?
08:46No, never.
08:47No, never.
08:48That's crazy.
08:49My son is not guilty.
08:51He need a trial.
08:53These people aren't waiting.
08:54They're trying to, um...
08:56They're trying to...
08:57That's right, and I'm tired of it.
09:07Open the window!
09:09Open the window!
09:11Open the window!
09:12Open the window!
09:14Open the window!
09:14Open the window!
09:15Open the window!
09:23Everything was suddenly bad.
09:29everything was um emotional talking to michael was different because he was different suddenly
09:38he was no longer the happy michael that i used to talk to he sounded depressed i felt like it
09:45was over like there was no way he could come back from these terrible things being said
10:17eventually
10:19he came back to america
10:24we had the information from the victim about michael's body and specifically the markings
10:33on his body so the only way that a child would see that is if michael was nude then our
10:43unit
10:43prepared a search warrant to search or to view michael's body and this included the genitals
10:50we explained to him we have a search warrant signed by the judge to take uh pictures of your
10:57private parts he said you assholes the outcome was that evidence that was provided by
11:10jordan chander he was confirmed
11:17yeah we'd uh we'd like to talk to michael jackson has he come back
11:22no comment sir no comment huh
11:25i don't necessarily think he's guilty but um i don't necessarily think he's innocent either because
11:30um i don't know well i don't know if he's guilty or not but i think that he needs to
11:34come back and
11:35face the charges he's looking pretty guilty right now
11:42there is real fear tonight that the catastrophic publicity will result in the destruction of a
11:48billion dollar empire and the ruin of a man
11:56sony stock has fallen because investors are very much concerned that the huge investment that
12:02they have in michael jackson is in fact not going to pay off
12:07when the allegations surfaced
12:11i read them watched them on tv like everyone else did
12:17um and i felt that they were extremely unfair
12:22michael jackson was unequivocally the biggest artist in the company
12:30and if he's not succeeding
12:34guess what jobs get lost
12:38is michael jackson going to make any statement he's got a whole cadre of international cameras there
12:44every night
12:51to that point michael had been laying low
12:54but once the allegations are out there you can't take them back again
13:01and so we needed to get in front of the public to unequivocally deny these allegations
13:09michael jackson came out of seclusion today without leaving home
13:13the pop star angrily rejected accusations he molested a young boy
13:17and lashed out at police and the media
13:19there have been many disgusting statements made recently concerning allegations of improper conduct on my part
13:27these statements about me are totally false
13:30at every opportunity the media has dissected and manipulated these allegations to reach their own conclusions
13:37i ask all of you to wait and hear the truth before you label or condemn me
13:43don't treat me like a criminal because i am innocent
13:48jackson's defiant declaration of innocence comes as the latest counterpoint in a case that's saturated with rumor innuendo
13:55and almost daily revelations about the singer
13:58separating fact from fiction can be difficult
14:16for years i have been working for michael
14:18who unfortunately has been the victim of this and other types of extortion attempts
14:23the demand for 20 million dollars was made
14:26and presented
14:27it was flatly and consistently refused
14:30many people try to extort michael
14:33because of who he is and you know the amount of money he has
14:36and these people wanted 20 million dollars
14:37as far as the victim is concerned i did not get anything as far as any like money motivation
14:46however the parents were a different story
14:49the hollywood reporter and entertainment trade paper said today that the boy's father had negotiated with jackson for a 20
14:56million dollar movie deal
14:57the father is a prominent beverly hills dentist and part-time screenwriter
15:01cbs news has obtained a taped phone conversation the voices reportedly the father of the 13 year old boy
15:08if i go through with this i win big time i will get everything i want
15:12the father did in fact ask for money
15:17to keep the situation quiet
15:19so it did um
15:22hurt the case a little bit
15:23i think it's pathetic that somebody would
15:26would go after someone like michael jackson
15:28was such vigor and it's obvious what they want
15:30and uh it seems obvious to me that he is innocent
15:33you know that there's a lot of people in this business that try and take advantage of people
15:37and uh you know
15:39i'm sure that it will all work out and i'm sure that he's innocent you know but
15:43only god knows the truth you know
15:48more and more people started to question the allegations
15:54so the management team started capitalizing on that momentum
15:59the main strategy was to um
16:03endear michael uh to the black community and to get the black community back on michael's side
16:11because once the black community is behind you
16:13you got it because you know we're a big group
16:17and um race relations um at that time
16:21it was a hotbed
16:27parts of los angeles erupted in unrest
16:31after a jury acquitted four white los angeles police officers
16:35over the videotape beating of rodney king a black motorist
16:50what happened with rodney king it doesn't make no sense to me
16:53they treating black people like we're dogs you know
16:56like we can't get nowhere
16:57we have no rights
16:59that the white man respects
17:00race is tearing america apart
17:05now more than ever minority americans believe there are two kinds of justice
17:10the white kind and the kind they get
17:17someone was friends with this african-american attorney named johnny cochran
17:23and so he suggested that johnny would be the best person for um for michael's case
17:29not only because he's black but also because he was brilliant
17:34mr cochran let me start with you
17:35why do you think it was important for michael jackson to speak out now
17:38well i think katie that after months of being barraged with negative uh attacks
17:44it was time everyone who was on michael's team knew that having a black face as the front man for
17:52the defense
17:53would um bring the black community to michael's defense as well
18:01the king of pop rock and soul mr michael jackson
18:08michael's first public appearance after his statement about the allegations
18:12was at the naacp image awards and that's the national association for the advancement of colored people
18:20i was in the audience when michael walked out on that stage the house went crazy
18:34everyone was in support of michael no one wanted to believe these allegations
18:41for decades the naacp had stood at the forefront of the struggle for equal justice under the law
18:48for all people in our land and his speech was based on being a proud black man
18:55and how you know we have to stick together against racial inequality and in injustice
19:03everyone is presumed to be innocent and totally innocent until they are charged with a crime
19:08and then convicted by a jury of their peers
19:22it was such a powerful speech
19:31with all the stuff that was happening to the black community
19:38it felt like michael's innocence was important
19:41and it was what we needed
19:51everybody wanted him to be back on top
20:05the family of a teenage boy is dropping its charge that michael jackson molested the boy
20:11larry carroll tells us the civil suit is now over
20:19we wish to jointly announce a mutual resolution of this lawsuit this boy wanted to get on with his life
20:29when that case was settled and i believe that the payout for that settlement was
20:3720 million or maybe a little more over 20 million dollars the family accepted the settlement
20:44the resolution of this case is in no way an admission of guilt by michael jackson
20:51being a megastar like he was he had the advantage with money with attorneys
20:59with really coming out and doing pretty much whatever he wanted in order to defend himself
21:06so that was pretty much the end of our case
21:10i felt bad because rosie and i we were certain that we had a good case
21:17but uh when the victim doesn't want to testify
21:21there is a say that says no victim no crime
21:27so nothing that we could do
21:35read all about it hollywood sex scandals heidi's little black book the hollywood hooker and heidi gate
21:45lonnie anderson says burt's a dud in bed uh-oh
21:52in this billion dollar business there's only one story that's guaranteed
21:57a big name in trouble that's the best news of all
22:00but of course the one that's grabbing the headlines right now are the allegations about
22:06michael jackson the biggest superstar in the world
22:09michael jackson is our window into the new news business
22:13and the magazine shows talk shows news chats that feed off tabloid truth
22:19michael jackson violator or victim
22:23what do you think about michael
22:25well i know i i think it's true
22:28he settled for all that money
22:29i don't know
22:29he settled for all that amount of money
22:31i think he's something's up when he settles for over 10 million dollars to shut someone up
22:35i don't know it's it's a shame because i think america's been dragged through a lot of lives
22:38you know he's a i don't know if he's a victim or if he did it or not but like
22:43he's lost that that wholesome image forever you know
22:49the allegations really changed how the public i think thought of him
22:55and michael had to kind of rehabilitate that image
23:04people had been obsessed with michael's sexuality his whole life
23:10and his managers thought it would be cool if the press found out that michael had a girlfriend
23:28michael and lisa started dating soon after the allegations had been settled
23:41he knew that marrying elvis presley's daughter would be headlines everywhere
23:47everyone would be talking about that and they no longer talk about this horrible time in his life
23:54with this ring i do it
23:57you've heard the talk for weeks it's surprising and it's apparently true
24:01the daughter of elvis presley confirms today she is now married to michael jackson
24:05let's go to vince dimitri in new york vince
24:08john uh hopefully you can see behind me the throngs of uh stargazers right behind me
24:13we are just outside of the world famous trump tower where
24:17donald trump tells us yes indeed that lisa marie presley and her new beau michael jackson
24:22are holed up here on the top floor
24:23well i'm very very happy for them i think it's great
24:27they're very happy and uh i think everybody's happy they're they're great people
24:36i first met michael in 1988
24:41michael was on tour in germany at that time
24:44and uh so they called me and said that michael is a big fan of mine and he would love
24:48to meet me
24:50and um we hit it up and he got to know the whole family
24:57i also knew lisa maria presley because spent lots of time in los angeles
25:04so i knew them separately and then later lisa came to me
25:08one day and said look michael is hitting on me and he
25:12he actually wants to marry me what do you think should i do that
25:15so i said go for it for him it was also he liked lisa because she was the daughter of
25:22the king so he was also a king king of pop
25:25this is a big deal we had never seen him get romantic with a woman like this ever
25:41i'm very happy to be here and just think nobody thought this would last
25:57it did work in the way that michael wanted it to work in that everyone was talking about it
26:04but at the same time the public wasn't really buying it
26:08it's all cover up it's all cover up from uh the little child thing that's what i think it is
26:12it's about it you don't think it's true love no
26:16i think it's a sham a heterosexual marriage would certainly take some of the heat off
26:21being accused of being a homosexual pedophile
26:27but michael and lisa were only together for around 18 months
26:35it's splitsville for graceland and neverland many of you may find this hard to believe but
26:40lisa marie presley and michael jackson are getting a divorce
26:44so tony it looks like the gloved one is no longer the loved one
26:48oh such a sad story sorry to hear that sorry to see that what a shock what a surprise
26:57it was kind of hard to watch
27:00he was trying to maintain his position as like the biggest superstar in the world and it wasn't quite
27:07working
27:10this is a man who changed the music industry
27:15he is a musical genius
27:18and people don't think of him in that sense anymore they think of him as a freak
27:24is there any way that he can lift himself out of this trough that he has largely dug for himself
27:58when he was working on the history album michael called me and said
28:02look i want to use some of your paintings for the artwork
28:08that was the painting that uh he really liked and then spontaneously he wrote
28:15this poem directly on the picture
28:19with such confusion don't it make you want to scream
28:24you try to cope with every lie
28:27to scrutinize somebody please have mercy
28:31because i just can't take it
28:39if you listen to the lyrics and the songs and the overall vibe of the tracks on history
28:45they're very aggressive they're very defensive
28:55even the screen video is very dark for michael
29:02then for the history album promo michael chose a dictator-esque image
29:09he's got these military troops marching behind him
29:12and a god-like aura
29:16that's what he wanted to push out there
29:18still on top
29:19still you know the biggest pop superstar in the history of music
29:25tower bridge was raised this afternoon to allow a 30-foot statue of rock star michael jackson to pass along
29:31the thames on a barge
29:39he's a mega star yeah they call him the king of pop so if he can afford to do this
29:42why not
29:45for the history tour michael decided to focus on his fan base abroad
29:51and his popularity continued over in europe and the uk asia versus the u.s where it was kind of
29:59slipping a little bit because of the allegations and all the media circuits around that
30:13it's like a dream come true
30:15i touched him
30:17i'm not gonna wear my hair
30:24i remember this one time i was with michael in budapest
30:30and the hotel was surrounded under siege by thousands of young people
30:40and what he did
30:42he draw the curtain a little bit and then he had a sklyab one
30:46and people screeched it was like an explosion down there
30:54he was laughing he said oh my god look
30:56did you hear do you hear
31:04i think there's a deep desire to look up for people that are bigger than life here as role models
31:10or as somebody you can worship i mean
31:13i think that's what mankind needs but i think the danger is
31:18when everybody worships you is that you start to believe it in a way that you start to worship yourself
31:25and i think that's very dangerous
31:35but he was enjoying that he likes to have that effect on people
32:03we really run into the diehard fan it's unbelievable
32:08it's like a religious experience
32:12you're like they're god
32:16some people will say that i don't worship but i don't think it's anything bad
32:26it's just so beautiful
32:30they all my life
32:51stay on your side
32:54stay in that corner
32:55stay in that corner
32:56stay in that corner
33:08when i met michael
33:24i saw that he was addicted to fame
33:31i was a well-known rabbi
33:33and michael and i had become friends
33:38michael really needed to be loved
33:40and he
33:40he chose to be loved
33:42in really in an unhealthy way
33:45which was
33:46through
33:48superstardom
33:48and the devotion of fans
33:51i said to him
33:59you've
33:59made the mistake of substituting love for this
34:02this cheap forgery called attention
34:07and attention is never a good substitute for love it's never real
34:12this attention
34:14became an addiction
34:16because he interpreted as love
34:17and it became a monster
34:19i felt that one of my principal objectives
34:30was to tether him back to humility
34:37and so our conversations became kind of therapy
34:46he wanted every word
34:49recorded for posterity
34:50we recorded it on these two
34:54flimsy dicta machines
34:55you know
34:56on these tiny little tapes
35:00honestly when somebody walks at the gym
35:02and says i love you so much
35:04it makes my heart feel so good
35:06like you can never get tired of it
35:16but is it also that
35:17the fans show you love
35:18based on
35:19your performance
35:20rather than you
35:26well
35:28i feel that love
35:29but it's from a distance
35:33it's not intimate
35:41he needed something to live for
35:44and as he explained it to me
35:46he always wanted to be around kids
35:49he loved the innocence of a child
35:51he loved the creativity of a child
35:54because for him the adult world was people wanting money from him
35:57and people wanting to know him for all the wrong reasons
36:08at that time in his life
36:12i think that michael wanted to be a father
36:21because kids
36:22as long as you give them unconditional love
36:24they really give it back
36:25they are mirror reflections of the love that we give them
36:28and he was going to give them the greatest love
36:29and they didn't
36:31and that's what happened
36:49who is that
36:52that's right
36:53it's live
37:05i think having children gave them a renewed sense of purpose
37:09a renewed sense of energy and direction
37:33i want to be successful being a great father
37:39i want them to say
37:41we felt completely loved
37:43and he was like incredible
37:47that's my biggest dream
37:49one day for Princeton Parish
37:51just to say to somebody
37:52he was the best dad
37:55one, two, three
37:57surprise!
38:00surprise!
38:03happy birthday to you
38:10i've been working with michael for four years
38:13by the time he had his children
38:18when Princeton Parish came along
38:22i saw a different
38:23a different person
38:29how can we do one where we are just pointing the camera
38:32his life was now about the children
38:37that was his priority
38:41and he was getting more and more absolutely clear
38:45about his future
38:47he was saying, Dita
38:50i did everything i could do in my life for the music
38:54and i think i did it well
38:56and everybody made a lot of money
38:58but new people coming
39:00other music is coming
39:02and he had the feeling
39:04he will never be successful like he was
39:08and he was fine with it
39:10michael said
39:11he didn't want to be a trained monkey
39:13forever
39:14it's over
39:16it's over
39:16we'll give it to Armin
39:17come on let's do it
39:21but when you start not
39:24to do
39:25what this
39:26he called it system
39:28once
39:29then you're in trouble
39:31let's make it sweet
39:32we are
39:32we are
40:01sony was pushing him
40:02to continue his career
40:05they were trying to get him to finish this album
40:09invincible
40:09it wasn't my business
40:11but you know
40:11screw the album
40:13we have to make your life healthy again
40:17so there was a war for the soul of michael jackson
40:25sony music was one of the biggest labels in the world hands down
40:31and with michael
40:33well that's a lot of money
40:34changing hands
40:36so yes it's cutthroat
40:41but sony music was no more cutthroat than any other label
40:48michael's relationship
40:49was a contentious one with his record label
40:56i was there to help facilitate a record he was putting out called invincible
41:01which was his official last studio record with sony
41:04and things were going over budget
41:07we had rented out the entire floor at the plaza hotel in new york
41:13and for anybody who doesn't know that
41:15that is extremely expensive crazy
41:18and he wasn't even showing up for things
41:23a record company is there to make money
41:25they are an investment firm in a way
41:27who has invested in you to produce something
41:32when we got the phone call that this was
41:34you know how dare you
41:36this was the most expensive record we've ever made
41:38you know and i'm like oh okay
41:40i'm like how much 30 million
41:42i'm like oh so it was kind of
41:44it was it was a problem
41:47but everybody was really trying to get him
41:51in tow so we could make a deadline for album release
41:58there's one time where i was asked to pick up a package
42:01at a house that apparently was being sold and is empty
42:05and in the mailbox was this package and i opened it up
42:09and it happened to be full of demoral
42:11which is a prescription pain medication
42:16but a lot of it
42:17it was it was an unknown thing that you don't ask
42:21i said what's going
42:23and i was like oh okay
42:25uh never mind
42:29but then he would go to the studio
42:32as long as he had his magical pills
42:35but it was all so confusing at the same time
42:37it wasn't
42:38i'm not there to look at someone and unwrap the package
42:41i'm there to get records done right
42:46there were so many people
42:47who were reliant on him
42:49to be the golden goose that lays eggs again
42:55but he knew that path was corrosive
43:00it it frightened me
43:02there was too much conflict going on with him
43:04and i i i sensed and i saw that i was losing my influence
43:08and i told him i'm not going to watch you drive your life off a cliff and clap
43:28invincible has sold two million copies in six months
43:31and that ain't invincible
43:33the flop of invincible
43:35along with a general downturn in sales
43:37means that stony's share price had suffered of late
43:44michael told me you know what
43:46i can't do this anymore
43:53michael was done
43:54with the music
43:55and with touring
43:57and all of this
44:08but
44:09stony was not happy at all with this
44:14so he knew he has to fight
44:16to come out of this situation
44:23from my vantage point
44:26he got a tremendous amount of support
44:30from stony music
44:33but you have to understand they're artists
44:35they're all narcissists
44:36they can't help themselves
44:38okay if their record's not selling
44:41it's someone's fault
44:43you know if their tour's not doing well
44:45it's someone's fault
44:48someone is always to blame
44:56michael jackson is the architect of his own destiny
44:59like every single human being
45:02whether you're special or not
45:04you are the creator of the reality you live in
45:10i remember we were required to go to new york city
45:13and then he's whisked off to al sharpton's church
45:19i personally think he was jacked up on something
45:24throughout the years
45:26black artists have been taken advantage of
45:30completely
45:31and it's sony tommy mottola
45:35tommy mottola is the president of the record division
45:39he is a mean
45:40he's a racist
45:42and he's very very very devilish
45:50you know this just it just exploded right there
45:53sony's statement reads
45:55we were deeply offended by the outrageous comments mr jackson made
45:58mr jackson has committed a serious abuse of power
46:02that comes with celebrity
46:29he told me today you need to help me
46:31it's over
46:34he asked me to terminate
46:36all his contracts
46:37with his lawyers
46:39with his team
46:40with everybody
46:42and
46:43he did want that
46:45i take over everything
46:51ladies and gentlemen
46:52my name is michael jackson
46:54and rather than writing you a letter
46:57i've found this format to be most efficient
46:59for what i was to communicate
47:03peter weissner from germany
47:05and myself have entered into an agreement
47:07an exclusive long-term partnership
47:09he gave me
47:10the power of attorney
47:11i will personally sign agreements
47:14or legally authorize my partners
47:16to sign on my behalf
47:19but
47:20and he told me today
47:21the old team
47:22they will be after you
47:25they called once and told me
47:28you take our golden cow
47:30and
47:32you have to stop this
47:33and
47:37but i was on michael's side of course
47:39and i did what
47:40he warned
47:42i remember these words
47:44from michael to me
47:45i put my life
47:47and my future
47:48in your hand
48:10when it comes to distributing cookies
48:12we get to see children's real personality
48:14here come here

48:31here
48:31okay here
48:33here's the cookie
48:34paris you want some of this
48:37by that time
48:38i wasn't involved in his life
48:40paris you're gonna say thank you
48:45paris you want that
48:46i received a phone call
48:49from
48:52a producer
48:54uh
48:55that worked with martin bashear
48:57martin bashear wants to
48:58interview michael jackson
49:00okay you're getting the big one
49:03i got off the phone
49:04and i went to michael and said
49:05first of all
49:06your life
49:07it's not ready to be open to the public
49:09stay a billion miles away
49:12from this guy
49:15but michael was an insecure person
49:17who is going to look for the validation of the public
49:23he wanted to talk about his whole life
49:26his career
49:28that people really understand him
49:33so martin bashear followed michael
49:36for eight months
49:42how do you write a song
49:44how do you write a song
49:46when i wrote billy jean
49:48i was writing in my car
49:50down ventura boulevard
49:52all i said to myself beforehand
49:54i want to write a song with a great bass hook
49:56you know

50:47michael had just had another child
50:54we was in the room
50:55together
50:56and michael
50:59heard the screaming
51:01from from the fans
51:02what a beautiful feeling
51:09and michael was so excited
51:10i was behind him
51:11he took blanket
51:14but they had him really fast
51:16under his arm
51:36in the next morning
51:37i came out of my room
51:39and i saw all over the newspaper
51:43that was not a nice

52:01okay okay
52:03here we go
52:04abu
52:04abu
52:16have you been hearing
52:17about what people
52:18have been saying
52:19that's totally ignorant
52:20i would never do that
52:21to my children
52:22or any any child
52:23try to kill them
52:24come on
52:24stupid
52:25and why would i put a scarf
52:26over the baby's face
52:27if i was trying to
52:28throw them off the balcony
52:29we were waiting to
52:31thousands of fans
52:31down below
52:32and they were chanting
52:33they want to see my child
52:34so i was kind enough
52:35to let them see
52:36i was doing something
52:38out of innocence
52:45when living with michael jackson
52:47as this evening
52:48these streets are going to be deserted
52:50fans and critics alike
52:52are saying they're going to be staying in to watch the program
52:55with his reputation in america
52:57very much at stake
52:58for michael jackson
53:00it must be a nervous wait
53:03i didn't want that
53:04we watched the documentary
53:05until i
53:06know what happened
53:09but michael
53:10of course he
53:11want to see it
53:12we watched it
53:14on tv
53:15together
53:20eight months ago
53:22i put a proposal
53:23to michael jackson
53:24show me the real man
53:26but show me everything
53:28make nothing off limits
53:29he thought about it
53:31and then he said
53:32yes
53:33come to neverland
53:36we began a journey together
53:38across continents
53:39through his past
53:41and rapidly
53:42into the disturbing reality
53:44of his life today
53:45in the documentary
53:48was this
53:50young boy
53:51gavin aviso
53:55and he was taking care of him
53:57when people hear that
53:59children
54:00from other families
54:02have come
54:03and they've stayed in your house
54:04they've stayed in your bedroom
54:07well very few
54:08but you know
54:09some have
54:10and they say
54:12is that really appropriate
54:14for a man
54:15a grown man
54:16to be doing that
54:16how do you respond to that
54:18i feel sorry for them
54:19because
54:20that's judging someone
54:21who wants to really help people
54:23well can't you share your bed
54:26the most loving thing to do
54:27is to share your bed with someone
54:30when i saw this
54:32i got a very bad feeling
54:35when you're talking about children
54:37if i
54:38said well
54:39i've invited some of my daughter's friends around
54:42or my son's friends around
54:43and they're going to sleep in the bed with me tonight
54:45that's fine
54:46what do you think their parents would say
54:47if they're wacky
54:48they would say
54:49you can't
54:50i suppose the problem
54:51for many people
54:52is what happened in 1993
54:54or what didn't happen
54:56what didn't happen
55:01one bombshell after another
55:04about his bizarre behavior
55:05in a new british documentary
55:07jackson admits
55:08he still has sleepovers with young boys
55:12i felt
55:18shock
55:19absolute shock
55:20have you lost all touch with reality
55:23that you don't even know
55:25how people are going to
55:28react to that
55:30he said
55:31he slept in his
55:32in a bed with
55:33with children that are not his own
55:34i mean this isn't made up
55:35this isn't fabricated
55:36what kind of loony
55:37would a do it
55:39and b go on national tv
55:40and admit it
55:42michael
55:43cross lines that clearly are uncrossable
55:46sharing a bed with a child
55:48that's not yours even if it's not sexual
55:49it's still
55:51insanity
55:52we got the reaction from
55:54all over of course
55:56i was children
55:57you can't sleep
55:58with strangers
55:59kids
56:00now as much as i love michael jackson
56:02i'm having a hard time defending him right now
56:04i believe that child welfare services
56:06should interview every child
56:07that has been at neverland
56:09with mr jackson
56:10in his bedroom
56:11or anywhere else in the home
56:12without the presence of their parents
56:14find out what's going on
56:16he couldn't talk
56:17and he was sitting on his bed
56:19crying
56:20what's ahead for michael jackson
56:23what do you think's ahead after this
56:24oh a real bumpy road
56:26i don't think he'll recover from this one
56:28that documentary led
56:31directly or indirectly
56:33to michael jackson's death
56:34there's absolutely no question about it
56:36that was the beginning of the end
56:51michael jackson wasn't the ordinary pedophile
56:55he had the means to be able to do things
56:57that no one else i had ever prosecuted could do
57:01in a state that was 2,800 acres
57:04and a huge house with multiple locks
57:06a staff that just ignored what was going on
57:10that was unique to michael jackson
57:13gavin can you tell us what your conversations
57:15what you guys talked about
57:18he said that he was going to be masturbated
57:21keep going
57:22i said no
57:25he started masturbating me
57:27okay
57:31we had lost the opportunity 10 years earlier
57:36and we were determined that that not happen again
58:04all right
58:07you
58:08you
58:09you
58:09you
58:11you
