00:00You really die the last time someone says your name.
00:04And I guess we kept all her stuff because we didn't want her to die.
00:13Even though I know she's dead.
00:18Victoria McEnroe is serial killer Leslie Sykes' ninth and most recent victim in the Mr. Shiny murders.
00:24A killing spree that spans three counties and over 18 years.
00:28Authorities continue to urge the public to keep a watchful lookout for Sykes.
00:32Remains at large and is considered armed and extremely dangerous.
00:36Residents of the Highland neighborhood where McEnroe was murdered have expressed their frustration at police for their inability to capture
00:43or even come close to capturing the elusive killer.
00:46It's unacceptable. It's insane.
00:50Somebody in the San Bernardino Police Department should be held accountable for letting it get out of hand like this.
00:55It's messed up how they haven't caught the guy yet.
00:59This used to be a pretty great place to live, but honestly, I'm really scared.
01:03And that girl, she just lives like a couple blocks from here.
01:07So, I mean, who's next, right?
01:09We were really feeling the pressure by this point.
01:12McEnroe's murder seemed to be the straw that broke the camel's back in terms of public outrage.
01:18But I felt for all of them, every single victim deserved justice.
01:23And for everything we'd done up until this point, until you catch your guy, you haven't done shit.
01:29We had already been offering a cash reward for any lead that led to the arrest of Leslie Sykes.
01:34But I convinced the DA's office to substantially up it.
01:38Ended up being one of the highest in San Bernardino's history.
01:41$80,000 for just one person.
01:43At the same time, we were digging into Sykes' past, trying to figure out everything we could, which wasn't easy.
01:50All his known relatives were dead.
01:52He had been briefly married in 88 to a woman named Suzanne Hemler, but that was over by 91.
01:58Tried to contact her, but she committed suicide in 2008.
02:02We started reaching out to people Sykes went to high school with, but nobody seems to remember him.
02:08Finally, we find someone who will talk to us.
02:10A guy named Jared Kelly.
02:12He was what?
02:13Shy, quiet.
02:16He was just off socially.
02:19Like, we'd go to bars, hang out, pick up chicks, and he would just, like, strike out.
02:25Leslie's only real hobby, if you could call it that, was hiking.
02:28Some rock climbing, he'd go up to Joshua Tree sometimes on the weekends, by himself, you know, do his thing.
02:36And then one time he came back, we were doing gate installation, and he's, like, fucking all wound up acting
02:44weird as shit.
02:46How so?
02:48Just, like, agitated, distracted.
02:52Later on, he told me he'd had some sort of religious experience in a cave that he found out there.
02:58A cave?
02:59He saw these red lights coming from the inside of a cave, and he heard the sound of rushing water,
03:06but not.
03:08And then he smelled food cooking, like barbecue, and that he went inside, and something appeared to him.
03:19Like what?
03:21Like, I don't fucking know, like a vision.
03:24The last time I saw him, he was living out of his car, and he said that he had burnt
03:35all of his possessions.
03:36The shit that he was saying, it was so out there that it fucking stuck with me.
03:42It's like ingrained.
03:45Shambler from the stars.
03:49The thorn of time.
03:52Which is metal as fuck.
03:54What do you think that means?
04:00111.
04:14Sykes attempts to break into the residence of Miles and Kelly Harris, an older couple living in Rancho West.
04:21He scales the fence into their backyard,
04:22but is almost immediately attacked
04:25by the Harris's 48-pound pit bull Caesar.
04:28Mr. Harris overhears the commotion,
04:30looks into his backyard, and sees the struggle happening.
04:33I mean, this was a big animal,
04:34and it's able to physically knock Sykes off his feet.
04:38We know he was hurt pretty bad
04:39because we find blood on the ground in multiple places.
04:42Sadly, the dog's only able to keep this up for so long
04:45before Sykes uses a bladed weapon and stabs it repeatedly.
04:49Then he jumps the fence again.
04:50This time, I was not going to let the same thing happen
04:53to the Harris's that happened to Victoria McEnroe.
04:56They were immediately put into protective custody.
04:59Not that it mattered,
05:00because Sykes must have had a backup plan for that night.
05:0431-year-old Leo Dietz was working a night shift
05:07at a 24-hour donut shop in La Sierra when he was attacked.
05:10Yeah, I don't like that as a shoot either,
05:12but this was actually pretty dope.
05:14It was, like, violence and sex and stuff, I don't know.
05:18It's based on books, so it seems pretty legit.
05:22Hmm.
05:23Yeah.
05:25Yeah, you too, man.
05:27Yeah, peace!
05:29Peace!
05:31Peace!
05:32Peace!
05:32Peace!
05:35Peace!
05:46Peace!
05:47Peace!
05:53You're welcome.
05:56Come on.
05:57No!
05:59Stop!
06:01No!
06:06No!
06:16Leo Dietz is bound the next morning
06:18with his heart removed from his body.
06:30The security guard sees Sykes exit the back of the shop
06:34and tries to confront him, but Sykes flees.
06:36Uh, honestly, I was just doing my job.
06:39I was wrapping up my rounds for the evening
06:41here in this complex.
06:42I was gonna take some donuts home to me and the girlfriend.
06:44I saw a man leaving the shop in a very, very weird mask.
06:48The guard still manages to grab his license plate number
06:51and report it to the police.
06:52Just bummed I didn't get the reward money.
06:54In the surveillance video from the donut shop,
06:57you could tell Sykes was in pain from the dog bite.
06:59He's unfocused and unprepared.
07:01Then he's forced to ditch his car
07:03after it's reported by the guard,
07:04which we find abandoned near the 91 and 215 interchange.
07:08The more desperate Sykes became,
07:10the more likely he was to make a mistake.
07:13That was the hope.
07:15We kind of hit a brick wall, digging into Sykes' past.
07:18He just vanished into thin air after 91.
07:22That's when we realized it's because
07:24he wasn't in the country.
07:26Turns out Sykes had used his late ex-wife's credit card
07:29to purchase a one-way ticket to, of all places, Jerusalem.
07:35I know.
07:36What the F, right?
07:38I mean, we were just baffled.
07:40And we also realized this was beyond the scope of our resources,
07:43so we reached out to the FBI and asked for their help.
07:46They, in turn, got in contact with Interpol,
07:49and a whole side investigation got underway,
07:52trying to find out what Sykes was doing over there.
07:55What was found out was...
07:58let's just say it didn't clear anything up.
08:00Sykes flies to Jerusalem in 96,
08:03not long after the murder of Noah Lafone,
08:05and then evidently passes into Syria.
08:08The information here is sketchy at best,
08:11but apparently Sykes was living in northern Iraq for two years,
08:14but then flees after Operation Desert Fox in 98.
08:18As far as we know, Sykes didn't speak Arabic,
08:21but apparently he learned.
08:25Sykes then crosses the border into Turkey
08:27and then into Italy in 2001.
08:29While there, he attends a museum exhibit
08:32on Etruscan pottery in the city of Mantua
08:34and gets into some sort of altercation and is arrested.
08:40I don't know what Sykes is doing looking at Etruscan pottery,
08:43but he doesn't stay in Italy long
08:44before moving on to Germany in 2003.
08:47And that's where we learn of someone
08:49who claims to have had direct contact with him there.
08:51I met Mr. Sykes when I was living in Xanten.
08:56He contacted me through the Internet
09:00about several books that I was selling.
09:03Specifically, he was looking to buy my copy
09:05of a printed work from the late Middle Ages,
09:10a manuscript known as The Scriptures of Thalil.
09:14It's a very valuable book.
09:16Only half a dozen copies or something still exist.
09:20What is the book about?
09:21It's a book of spells, basically, witchcraft.
09:26And he bought it off you?
09:27Well, he wanted to buy it off me,
09:29but I wasn't selling.
09:30I don't know if he was for real or not,
09:33but he offered some wild prizes.
09:35A hundred, a hundred fifty thousand euro.
09:38The guy kind of creeped me out, to be honest.
09:43So, when my shop was vandalized a couple days later
09:46and the book was gone,
09:47I immediately knew who did it.
09:49To know that I came that close in contact
09:52with a serial killer.
09:54The thing that gets me more than anything else, though,
09:57is what the hell happened to that book.
10:00We had hoped, maybe, that Sykes would be deterred
10:04by how bungled the last few attacks had been.
10:07We didn't think he would stop,
10:08but maybe just slow down long enough
10:10for us to find him.
10:12If anything, it must have reinvigorated his cause.
10:16Wait!
10:17This is not our issue.
10:18We can't just leave him.
10:19Are you fucking kidding me?
10:20This is not our problem.
10:22I'm leaving.
10:22Emily, you're in the head.
10:33Holy shit.
10:38This is fucking crazy.
10:51The victim was Siraj Malik,
10:53the security guard that saw Sykes behind the donut shop
10:56and reported his plate to police.
10:58After leaving work on April 2nd,
11:00he was supposed to meet his girlfriend
11:01at a bar at 8.30, but never shows.
11:03He doesn't show up for work the next day, either.
11:05And his cell phone is off.
11:07Although his coworkers are a little concerned,
11:09nothing's reported to police,
11:11I guess he had a habit of just blowing out to Vegas
11:14for the weekend without telling anybody.
11:16But he didn't go to Vegas.
11:19The following day, he's found hung from a public playground swing set.
11:24Displayed is the word.
11:26It was a form of torture the ancient Vikings used to use called blood eagle.
11:32The flesh of the back is cut open.
11:34The ribs are bent back.
11:36Then both lungs are pulled out.
11:39The mutilation resembles...
11:42Yeah, you guessed it, wings.
11:44Blood eagle.
11:45It was clearly done for a dramatic effect.
11:48When the fire department is getting his body down,
11:50they find the CD.
12:19Oh, fuck.
12:23Hold on!
12:26Hold on!
12:28Anybody help?
12:31Come on!
12:32Help!
12:36Hold on!
12:37Get out of here!
12:40Go, go, go, go, go!
12:41Okay, okay, whoa, whoa, whoa, whoa, whoa!
12:43Stop, please, oh, no, no, no!
12:44Oh, oh, shit!
12:45No, no, please, fuck!
12:47No, no, no, please!
12:50Stop it!
12:51Fuck!
12:52Okay, I'll do it, okay, I'll do it!
12:54Please stop!
12:55Please stop!
12:55Please stop!
12:58I have been selected because of my direct actions.
13:03I should not have interfered with the Great One's plan,
13:05and for my blasphemies,
13:08I will be put into transit.
13:12Hello?
13:16Hello?
13:17Hello?
13:20Hello?
13:21Hello?
13:22He wanted us to know he was punishing this guy for trying to stop him.
13:27He was saying, stay out of his way or else.
13:30He was saying, this is your fault, not mine.
13:36And actually, those faults were in the death.
13:38Oh, but I do.
13:41No, I'll carry his death and all of their deaths on my conscience until the day I leave this planet.
13:47After the Malick murder, a lot less tips came in.
13:50People were afraid.
13:52I guess they had every right to be.
13:54We picked apart Sykes' house with a fine-toothed comb and found almost nothing useful at all.
13:59We excavated parts of the backyard.
14:02There was nothing but dirt.
14:04We knew Sykes used Presto brand toothpaste.
14:07The one DVD he owned was season two of Meet the Fur Balls,
14:11and his favorite drink was 2% milk.
14:14Yikes.
14:14He ate there.
14:16He slept there.
14:17But it didn't seem like he lived there.
14:19It was like a front.
14:20It was like a show being put on to pretend the person that lived there was vaguely normal.
14:26After a long day of chasing some leads that went nowhere,
14:30I went to the backyard of Sykes' house to get some fresh air.
14:35I think I was hoping I'd have some transcendent moment a lot of profilers talk about,
14:39you know, when you enter the headspace of the killer and you start to think like them.
14:44That never happened.
14:46None of it made any sense to me.
14:49So it's like 2 in the morning, and I'm just, you know, zoning out, looking up at the stars.
14:57And then I remember that telescope that we pulled Sykes' prints from.
15:05What stars was Leslie Sykes looking at?
15:08The area in the sky that Leslie Sykes had his telescope pointed at was interesting for two reasons.
15:14First, he was looking at Ophiuchus.
15:15Now, most people haven't even heard of Ophiuchus.
15:18It's one of the 13 major constellations along the ecliptic smack in between Scorpius and Sagittarius.
15:25It's also called the so-called 13 zodiac sign,
15:28although that's getting into astrology and not harsh science.
15:32My wife would kill me for explaining it that way.
15:35The ancient Greeks were the ones that named all the constellations as we know them today.
15:39Pisces is a fish, Taurus is a bull, etc.
15:43Ophiuchus is the serpent bearer, a man battling a giant snake.
15:49The reason I mention Ophiuchus is because a rare celestial event was taking place in its constellational borders that exact
15:55month.
15:56A planetary alignment where Mercury, Jupiter, and Saturn come in earshot of each other in a way that happens once
16:03every 800 years or so.
16:05This is a real thing.
16:06You can look it up.
16:07May 13, 2011.
16:09You could view it with the naked eye, but only for a few hours, which is why it's so special.
16:16The symbol, a leech bite.
16:22Mercury, Jupiter, Saturn.
16:25A rare planetary alignment that was only a few weeks away.
16:30So is this all one big coincidence?
16:33One thing that you really drill into your brain at the academy is that the human mind is very adept
16:38at finding patterns in things, even if they aren't there.
16:42They tell you to watch out for it, to not get carried away, to remember Occam's razor.
16:47The simplest explanation is usually the correct one.
16:53But sometimes, it's actually the strangest.
16:57We had brought in these big halogen lights to Sykes' house because the place was so dark at night.
17:02But as soon as we turned it on, it blew a fuse.
17:05So one of the deputies is trying to reset the breaker and realize the subpanel in the closet wasn't working.
17:12As he's messing with it, the whole thing just comes out of the wall.
17:16Like everything in that house, it was a fake.
17:18Behind it, there was a space with a lockbox.
17:21Of course, we cleared the house and called the bomb squad, just in case.
17:25He's one of those little robots and everything.
17:27No bomb.
17:29That didn't seem like his style anyway.
17:31The box was just a cheapo.
17:33We just pried it open with a crowbar.
17:35And inside, just two things.
17:38Wesley Sykes' passport expired from 2003 and a key with an attached keychain.
17:51We drove over there straight away and went inside the unit.
17:54In retrospect, it was pretty stupid of us.
17:57I mean, the thing could have been booby-trapped or he could have been waiting in there for us.
18:00Who knows?
18:02But it felt like we'd run out of time.
18:04We just got lucky.
18:06Everywhere my light goes, you go, okay?
18:08Jackpot, winning lotto ticket, royal flush, lucky.
18:26Uh, here's why we never get fingerprints.
18:29Guy wears a full-on hazmat suit.
18:32This is the mold, we believe, for the mask that he's been seen in.
18:38Yeah, this guy's big into space.
18:40Over here.
18:41Real big.
18:43I think you're a hard-out.
18:47Oh, you gotta check this out.
18:48This is, um, early childhood reading for late-night solstice of witchcraft of early England.
18:59This right here, we think is Denizal's tongue, right?
19:03Unless he's cut out other tongues.
19:06This hair is Victoria McEnroe.
19:08Well, we think it is, because it's, uh, we watched her hair get cut off, and that is Suraj Malik.
19:18He's been here for some reason.
19:19Yeah.
19:22Over here is what we think is Sheridan's blood.
19:28We've got this shit up here.
19:30We've got this shit up here.
19:31Hail, Asragor.
19:35And then this weird altar.
19:41Is this Asragor?
19:43Have you ever heard of Asragor?
19:46Asragor, no.
19:48How about Caliban?
19:50Like in Shakespeare?
19:52The thorn of time sounds familiar.
19:55Uh, I've heard that.
19:56Where have I heard that?
19:57Uh, this is, uh, pre-Kirneiform, so it's all very cryptic, but, uh, here.
20:02Et el-groth-gulke-levesk-kirtubu.
20:08Uh, the, uh, temple of the outer gate beyond the, uh, thorn of time.
20:16Uh, Kirtubu, I've heard before, that means, uh, krönung, uh, crowning, uh, coronation.
20:29Whereas before we had little to no evidence to go on, we now had way too much.
20:35Sykes had collected tons of information on each of his victims, had them all in a filing
20:39cabinet, criminal history, medical records, information the public does not have access
20:43to, so he must have been paying off cops or private investigators.
20:46And every murder had been meticulously documented.
20:49There were photos, drawings, hundreds of handwritten pages by Sykes with his ramblings.
20:55A pure window into a man's madness.
20:58Oh, we were pulling all-nighters in that horrible space.
21:01Even after the bodies were removed, the smell never went away.
21:05We were going crazy.
21:07On May 8th, the manager of the place comes looking for us.
21:11Someone sent mail to the office for us.
21:13It was another letter.
21:18The Great Lord of the Threshold has arrived at the gate.
21:21The Great Rectification.
21:24The Final Extirpation.
21:26The Dawn of Coliban.
21:29One left for me, then he's set free.
21:49Around midnight on May 12th, Sykes breaks into the home of Glenn and Stephanie Cortland via a garage
21:55window and abducts their three-month-old baby, Sawyer.
22:09The Dragon of Coliban.
22:09New Year's Day of the Caiming Commodore.
22:16The final distance is left for me.
22:17Forever the petition is left for me.
22:22The Fear of the Children.
22:22Near the smoke, the Henry.
22:24Thetradishline.
22:28The Tomb.
22:28The Dream of the Circle.
22:29The Pandifying, căre up a radio where the city was introduced.
22:36he could have killed that child in his crib right then and there but he was waiting i mean he
22:41was
22:41deliberately waiting for something but what we had no idea where sykes was going or what his
22:48plan was but it didn't seem like a coincidence that the triangle in the sky was supposed to
22:53appear that morning that was a friday by the way the 13th coincidence right
23:03i am just getting to work it's around 3 a.m and let's see okay right here right here not
23:1220 feet
23:12from where i found that woman's body i see this red suv parked the vehicle is empty i just got
