00:01Belgium is planning to take control of all nuclear power plants in the country.
00:06The federal government is currently negotiating with French energy group ENGIE,
00:11which currently owns and manages all nuclear activity in Belgium.
00:15The move comes in an effort by Brussels to secure control of its own energy supplies.
00:21On social media platform ex-Prime Minister Barthe Weaver said the Belgian government chooses
00:26quote, safe, affordable and sustainable energy and wants to transition away from fossil fuels.
00:33Currently only two out of the country's seven reactors remain active.
00:38The Weaver has pushed back against the closure of the two remaining power plants
00:42and even seeks to reopen decommissioned ones.
00:45ENGIE however opposes that idea.
00:48The energy giant instead wants to invest in wind, solar, batteries and gas-powered stations.
00:55The negotiations are expected to conclude in October,
00:58but until then the Weaver said that the plans to decommission nuclear operations in Belgium,
01:03which had been initiated by ENGIE, are now on hold.
