00:01A man died in Kashmir, but his funeral was attended by his family on both sides of the border,
00:06separated only by a river.
00:08Raja Liyaqat Ali Khan, a government official from Jammu and Kashmir,
00:11was laid to rest in his village in Keren after he died of a heart attack.
00:15As his body was brought to the banks of the Kishan Ganga River,
00:17his relatives gathered just a few meters away on the other side.
00:21They lived across the line of control.
00:23They could see his coffin, but they could not reach him.
00:26The river between them was not just water, it was the border between India and Pakistan.
00:31His parents, siblings and extended family had rushed there for one last glimpse and moaned from the distance.
00:37According to locals, they had migrated to the other side of the line of control
00:40during the armed insurgency in the early 1990s.
00:43Reports said that Khan chose to remain in Jammu and Kashmir,
00:46continue serving in the government and build his family there.
00:49Earlier, divided Kashmiri families could meet through a special permit system
00:52that allowed limited cross-LOC's travel at designated points.
00:56This arrangement was suspended after the 2019 Palakot escalation and has remained closed since.
