Hello everyone and welcome. In today's feature from 1953 called Wicked Woman, we find out if blondes do have more fun. The story begins with a blonde bombsight, I mean bombshell named Billie. Now Billie or Miss Nash if you don't buy her a drink is a drifter. Going from town to town looking for the next mark. And she's found it. Billie gets a job at a local bar and sets her site on a married man named Matt. Now Matt, well he's push over. Not happy in his marriage so one thing leads to another. Only thing is Billie wants more than just Matt. Staring in this tale of what do you mean we have to wait for the papers to go through we have...Beverly Michaels as Billie, Richard Egan as Matt, Evelyn Scott as Dora, Percy Helton as Charlie, Robert Osterloh as Larry, Frank Ferguson as Bill Porter and Bernadene Hayes as Mrs. Walters. So let's make some Lady Fingers, Blonde on Blonde cocktails and enjoy or at least try too. After a few cocktails you will. Thanks so much for watching.

00:00:16Why is a wicked woman a passionate gang?
00:00:24A thing a good man just can't leave alone You know before you started, you'll end up brokenhearted
00:00:38But still you're like a ball to play Why does a wicked woman have bruised her little eyes
00:00:52That cast you to spell, you can't escape You know that what she's doing is sure to cause your ruin
00:01:06And still you listen to her lie When the dives are loaded and the cards are marked and phony
00:01:20Then why do you want to play When the love that you're receiving from her lips is so deceiving
00:01:41Then why is a wicked woman a devil in your brain That eats away your heart's eager man?
00:01:54Shield up and live tomorrow Take all and pray for sorrow Find a new man and start all over again

00:03:10Really, Fitzpatrick Polo
00:03:11Thank you
00:03:11That's wonderful
00:03:16The girl who roomed here before had it for almost two years.
00:03:19She'd still be here if she hadn't got married to a man who got transferred to Milwaukee.
00:03:26Gee, I must remember to have that fixed.
00:03:28Well, how do you like it?
00:03:30It's lovely. How much?
00:03:32Of course, it's a little hard to judge now, but when you get your own things around, it'll make a
00:03:36big difference.
00:03:37Okay, you sold me. How much?
00:03:39Six dollars in advance.
00:03:42You get clean linens and towels once a week, baths down the hall, try to take it easy on the
00:03:49lights.
00:03:51By the way, what's your name?
00:03:53Billy Nash.
00:03:54I'm Mrs. Walters.
00:04:02Gee, I hate to take your luck, kid.
00:04:05Tell you what. I'll save it for you and you can give me a bill for it.
00:04:08Do me a favor and get rid of it.
00:04:10All the luck that's brought me shouldn't happen to a dog.
00:04:13Well, it's up to you.
00:04:15What you do is your own business.
00:04:16But I run a respectable house.
00:04:19And don't forget, every week in advance.
00:04:35¶¶
00:04:37¶¶
00:04:39I don't know.
00:05:09Oh, my God.
00:05:42Good evening.
00:05:45Hi.
00:05:46I see we're going to be neighbors.
00:05:48That's nice.
00:05:50I live right across the hall, so if I can ever be of any service...
00:05:54I'll let you know.
00:06:13Hey, you're going to be in there all night?
00:06:15Don't get yourself it enough, Rob.
00:06:17Coming right out.
00:06:21It's all yours.
00:06:23Well, it's about time.
00:06:24There's only one bathroom on this floor, you know.
00:06:27I'll speak to the management.
00:07:00Have you got change of a quarter?
00:07:01I want to make a phone call.
00:07:02Why, yes, I think so.
00:07:13Yes, here we are.
00:07:16Thanks.
00:07:17You're very welcome.
00:07:39Hello, I'm calling about your ad for a waitress.
00:07:42Oh, I see.
00:07:45Thanks.
00:07:49Scratched.
00:07:51No luck, huh?
00:07:52I should have known.
00:07:53My horoscope said this was going to be a bad day.
00:07:56Could I, uh...
00:07:58Could I offer you a glass of shelly?
00:07:59Oh, I don't want to interrupt your dinner.
00:08:01Oh, oh, oh, please.
00:08:03I insist.
00:08:05Well, if you insist.
00:08:10It's nice having company for a change.
00:08:13A man gets lonesome living alone.
00:08:15There's nothing much you can do.
00:08:17Bleed.
00:08:19Listen to the radio.
00:08:21Take into a movie.
00:08:23But I don't have to explain that to you.
00:08:25You live alone, too.
00:08:26Sure.
00:08:28Mmm, that was good.
00:08:29Charlie, you're a cook.
00:08:30I'm glad you like it.
00:08:32How about another cup of coffee?
00:08:34No, thanks.
00:08:34I'm positively full.
00:08:37Oh, my beat.
00:08:39Why don't you stretch out in my big chair for a while and relax?
00:08:42I'd better be going.
00:08:43I have to be up in the morning to find a job.
00:08:45Oh, but it's early yet.
00:08:47I can hardly keep my eyes open.
00:08:48Some other time, Charlie.
00:08:49How about a nightcap?
00:08:51It'll make you sleep better.
00:08:52Couldn't hold another drop.
00:08:53Besides, I'll be asleep as soon as I hit that pillow.
00:09:00You've been real swell, Charlie.
00:09:01Thanks a lot.
00:09:02Oh, Billy.
00:09:04A dinner donut tell you to no special favors, Buster.
00:09:07I just wanted to say that tonight's been swell,
00:09:09and I hope we can do it again soon.
00:09:12Why not?
00:09:13Good night, Billy.
00:09:15Good night.
00:09:45We're not open till six.
00:09:51Mrs. Bannister?
00:09:53Yeah.
00:09:54Mr. Cutler of the employment agency sent me.
00:09:57Sit down.
00:09:58Where have you worked before?
00:09:59No place in town.
00:10:01I just came here a few weeks ago to live with my sister.
00:10:03You have references?
00:10:04Mr. Cutler said he'd phone you.
00:10:06Yeah, he phoned me.
00:10:07Says he knows you a long time, recommends you highly.
00:10:09That means he knows you're weak, and he's on the make.
00:10:11I met him today, and I need the job.
00:10:14Well, what about references?
00:10:16I did the silliest thing, Mrs. Bannister.
00:10:17My sister just got married, and I loaned her my suitcase.
00:10:20It had all my personal papers in it.
00:10:22How long would it take you to get them?
00:10:24Well, I really couldn't say.
00:10:25They're driving across the country on their honeymoon,
00:10:27and I may not hear from them for a couple of weeks.
00:10:29I'd like to know who I'm hiring.
00:10:31Do you think you could possibly make an exception in this case, Mrs. Bannister?
00:10:35I spent all my savings on my sister's wedding, and I really need the job.
00:10:40Ever work in a bar before?
00:10:41Sure.
00:10:42Some bigger, some smaller.
00:10:44This pays six dollars a night in tips.
00:10:46That's fine with me.
00:10:47We get a steady trade here.
00:10:48They can get a little rough at times.
00:10:50You got to know how to keep them in line.
00:10:51Be nice to them, but not too nice.
00:10:52I think I can handle it.
00:10:54That's what the last girl said.
00:10:57I'm not the last girl.
00:11:00Pretty sure of yourself, aren't you?
00:11:01Look, Mrs. Bannister, I've been knocking around ever since I was a kid.
00:11:05Can you start tonight, six o'clock?
00:11:07Sure, the sooner the better.
00:11:09How about a drink?
00:11:10Thanks.
00:11:10How do you want it?
00:11:11Same way.
00:11:16To women.
00:11:16Amen.
00:11:20Dall yourself up.
00:11:21Wear a peasant blouse, an off-the-shoulder sweater, tight skirt.
00:11:24You know what they want.
00:11:24I'll give it to them.
00:11:27Say, if I'm going to be back here by six, I'd better hustle.
00:11:30Make it a little earlier if you can.
00:11:31What's your name again?
00:11:32Billy Nash.
00:11:33Well, good luck, Billy.
00:11:35Thanks, Mrs. Bannister.
00:11:36Make it Dora.
00:11:37Okay, Dora.
00:12:09What about my coat, Mr. Borg?
00:12:11I'll have it ready for you the first thing in the morning, Mrs. Walters.
00:12:17Hi, Charlie.
00:12:18Guess what?
00:12:19I got myself a job today.
00:12:20So soon?
00:12:21Oh, that's wonderful.
00:12:23Congratulations.
00:12:23I knew you'd be glad to hear about it.
00:12:25Look, Charlie, I'm sorry if I was a little rude last night, but I was dead tired.
00:12:29Oh, don't worry about it, Billy.
00:12:30We all get that way at times.
00:12:32I'll tell you what, though.
00:12:33I'll find out what night I get off and we'll go out and celebrate.
00:12:35Just the two of us.
00:12:36Oh, you'd really do that?
00:12:37You'd go out with me?
00:12:39Of course I would.
00:12:40We'll go someplace for dinner, someplace we can dance.
00:12:42We'll make a big night of it.
00:12:43Oh, I haven't done that in ages.
00:12:45I'm really not even a very good dancer.
00:12:47Don't worry.
00:12:47I'll teach you all the latest steps.
00:12:49Sounds wonderful.
00:12:50Well, I've got to hurry and do some shopping, Charlie.
00:12:51I'll see you later.
00:12:53Oh, what's the matter?
00:12:56Charlie, do you think you could loan me $20?
00:12:59$20?
00:13:00I've got to get a new outfit for the job.
00:13:02I'll pay you back next week.
00:13:03Oh, I don't know.
00:13:05You don't want to just say so.
00:13:07Oh, no.
00:13:07It doesn't matter.
00:13:08I just don't know whether I can spell it or not.
00:13:10Forget it.
00:13:11Yeah, I guess I can.
00:13:13Here you are, Billy.
00:13:14Thanks a lot, Charlie.
00:13:15That's really swell of you.
00:13:16I'll pay you back next week for sure.
00:13:18Oh, don't worry about it, Billy.
00:13:19And find out how soon your night off will be, will you?
00:13:23Sure, Charlie.
00:13:24Come on.
00:14:15I'll pay you back next week.
00:14:34I'm the new girl, Billy Nash.
00:14:37Yeah, I know, Dora told me.
00:14:39You can hang your things in the back.
00:14:42Are you Mr. Bannister?
00:14:44Yeah.
00:14:45Yeah.
00:14:56Hi, you the new girl?
00:14:58Yeah.
00:14:58I'm Gus.
00:14:59Hiya, Gus.
00:14:59I'm Billy.
00:15:01You ought to do all right here.
00:15:02I hope so.
00:15:03You will.
00:15:04Thanks.
00:15:08You've hustled drinks before, haven't you?
00:15:10Sure.
00:15:11We got mostly a neighborhood crowd here.
00:15:13Steady trade.
00:15:14They're good drinkers that don't rush them.
00:15:15Keep the drinks moving, but don't rush them.
00:15:17I get it.
00:15:17Oh, and keep the bowls filled with pretzels.
00:15:20The more they eat, the more they drink.
00:15:21I will.
00:15:22Now, you'll have to pay me and collect for your own drinks.
00:15:24So if any stiffs run out on you, it's your tough luck.
00:15:26Okay, but I don't have any money for change.
00:15:29Oh.
00:15:34Here's 20.
00:15:37Sign this receipt.
00:15:44I'll collect that from you tonight.
00:15:47Anything else you want to know?
00:15:50Does your wife show up here at night?
00:15:55Yeah.
00:15:57Why?
00:15:59Oh, I was just wondering.
00:16:02Let me have the pretzels, will you?
00:16:09How we doing?
00:16:10Uh, same all around.
00:16:12Come on, Billy.
00:16:13Sit down and we'll talk.
00:16:13Yeah, his wife doesn't understand it.
00:16:16Don't pass the merchandise.
00:16:22Everything okay?
00:16:23Sure, Billy will holler when we need you.
00:16:25Oh, what do you mean?
00:16:26I need her right now.
00:16:27I only advertise.
00:16:31I got a feeling she could go for me.
00:16:33I do, too.
00:16:34With a brick bat.
00:16:41Billy, how's it going?
00:16:43Fine, they're a nice bunch.
00:16:44You're going to be all right.
00:16:46They like you, I can tell.
00:16:47You're going to be good for business.
00:16:48Thanks, I hope so.
00:16:50Billy, get me a double shot, but don't let Matt know.
00:16:54Sure.
00:17:04A double bourbon, two ryes, and a bottle of beer.
00:17:07Thanks, I'm going to be good for it.
00:17:23Where's thepentium?
00:17:46Two and a quarter.
00:18:07Thanks a lot.
00:18:08You can do the same for me sometime.
00:18:12What's this slip for $20?
00:18:13Oh, I let Billy have that for change.
00:18:15Oh, yeah, here it is. Thanks.
00:18:17How'd you do tonight?
00:18:18Pretty good. Seven and a quarter.
00:18:19Say, that's all right. Isn't it, Matt?
00:18:22The best the other girls ever did in the week night was about $5.
00:18:25Keep it up. I knew they'd like you.
00:18:27Get started on the grasses, Billy.
00:18:29Better order some more hamburger tomorrow.
00:18:31Again? We just got 15 pounds yesterday.
00:18:33You want I should make them thinner and get complaints?
00:18:35Okay, okay. I'll order it.
00:18:37See you tomorrow.
00:18:38Night.
00:18:39The way he makes those sandwiches, you'd think he was handing them out to his relatives.
00:18:42Can't expect to make anything on food.
00:18:43Yeah, we don't have to lose on it.
00:18:46I think I'll have a shot, Matt.
00:18:50Heaven with me, Billy?
00:18:52No, thanks, Dora.
00:18:53Ah, come on.
00:18:54I'll pick you up.
00:18:55I'll take a rain check.
00:18:58Don't put it away, Matt.
00:19:02Why don't you lay off for the night, Dora?
00:19:04Haven't I been a good girl?
00:19:06I told you I wouldn't drink during business hours.
00:19:08Dora, it's for your own good.
00:19:12Come on, be a sport.
00:19:15You can't leave it alone for one night, can you?
00:19:18Look, don't tell me what to do.
00:19:19If I want to drink, I'll drink.
00:19:21You're not getting any more.
00:19:22Who are you to tell me what I'm getting?
00:19:24This place is half mine.
00:19:25Every bottle behind that bar is half mine.
00:19:27Yeah, go ahead.
00:19:28Slop it up.
00:19:30Drink yourself into your grave like your old man did.
00:19:32Don't you dare talk about my father.
00:19:34Why, you owe him everything you've got.
00:19:35You'd still be a lousy bartender if I hadn't married you.
00:19:37Shut up and guzzle your boots.
00:19:39Don't you tell me to shut up.
00:19:41How do you like that, Billy?
00:19:42He doesn't like the stuff, so nobody else is supposed to drink it.
00:19:45Isn't that just like a man?
00:19:46Anything they want to do is all right, but a woman, oh, that's different.
00:19:49Leave her out of this.
00:19:50I wasn't talking to you.
00:19:53You sure you won't have one?
00:19:55Well, don't let this big slob scare you.
00:19:58If you feel like having a drink, you have one.
00:20:10They worked your little ink.
00:20:11Don't do that!
00:20:12What are you trying to do, scare me to death?
00:20:14Oh, I'm sorry, Billy.
00:20:15I didn't mean to frighten you.
00:20:17Don't ever do that, Charlie.
00:20:19You can give somebody a heart attack.
00:20:21I just wanted to find out how your new job went.
00:20:23Oh, okay, but I'm so tired now.
00:20:26I don't want to talk about it.
00:20:27I don't want to go to bed.
00:20:28Did you find out what night you'd have free?
00:20:31What are you talking about?
00:20:32Well, you know, the night we're going out together.
00:20:36Oh, I didn't get a chance to ask about it.
00:20:39Hey!
00:20:40Hey, you two, knock it off.
00:20:41I've got to get some sleep.
00:20:43Ah, drop dead.
00:20:45Don't tell me to drop dead.
00:20:47If you two and all the time, they go out of the ballpark.
00:20:50What are you trying to do, Mr. Rodney?
00:20:51Wake up the whole house.
00:20:53If you don't want to sleep, other people do.
00:20:56What are you yelling at me for?
00:20:58Tell it to them two eggheads.
00:21:00What's going on up there?
00:21:01This is a respectable house.
00:21:03Frankly.
00:21:04I'm a respectable house.
00:21:05This place is full of bouts.
00:21:07If you don't like the way I run this house, why don't you move out?
00:21:10You've got a nerve to don't be your tenants that way.
00:21:13Well, I think there's better rat crap than this is at the rest.
00:21:15Shut up!
00:21:16I'll never get to sleep.
00:21:17You're the one that started all this, you big clown,
00:21:20howling your head out at this side of the night.
00:21:22If you loudmouth don't shut up and go back to bed,
00:21:25I'm coming up there and throw you out.
00:21:27Oh, yeah!
00:21:28Yeah, you heard me.
00:21:29But this is my house, and I'm running at the way I'm going to sleep.
00:21:34Hi, Matt.
00:21:35Hi, Billy.
00:21:36Just the man I've been looking for.
00:21:38Have you got a record of Acapulco nights?
00:21:40Yeah, I think I got one in the car.
00:21:42That's a real dud, though.
00:21:43Haven't had much luck with it.
00:21:45Ah, come on.
00:21:45Give it a try.
00:21:46Maybe your luck will change.
00:21:48You're new around here, aren't you?
00:21:49Yeah.
00:21:51Hey, Matt.
00:21:52Your taste's improving.
00:21:55Okay, I'll put it on.
00:21:56Can't cost me anything but money.
00:21:58Thanks.
00:21:59Get some pretzels from Gus, Billy.
00:22:01Okay.
00:22:03Hi, Gus.
00:22:04Hi.
00:22:05How are we doing?
00:22:05Not bad.
00:22:10Where are the pretzels?
00:22:11Up on that shelf.
00:22:13You can reach them better than me.
00:22:18What goes with those two, anyway?
00:22:20How do you mean?
00:22:21They had a little love spat while we were closing up last night.
00:22:23I thought they were going to brain each other.
00:22:25Oh, that's it.
00:22:26You'll get used to it.
00:22:28She likes to hit the bottle, and it makes Matt see red.
00:22:31But don't let it throw you.
00:22:32She's still his wife, and nobody knows that better than Matt.
00:22:36How long they've been married?
00:22:37Oh, six or seven years.
00:22:39Matt used to work here.
00:22:41If it hadn't been for him, they'd have lost the place.
00:22:43Her old man was a real boozer, the worst kind.
00:22:46Like father, like daughter, huh?
00:22:47Yeah, I guess so.
00:22:49I keep out of it, though.
00:22:50That's the best way.
00:22:51And so will you if you're smart.
00:22:54I got my own trouble.
00:23:03Why don't you get rid of that piano, and we'll both make a buck.
00:23:06I couldn't.
00:23:07Clancy wouldn't stand for it.
00:23:10Okay, I'll see you next week.
00:23:11So long.
00:23:17I'm sorry about last night.
00:23:19Forget it.
00:23:20I understand those things.
00:23:21She only gets that way when she's drinking.
00:23:23Sure.
00:23:23How's she feeling?
00:23:24Not too hot.
00:23:25She's not coming in tonight.
00:23:26Gonna stay in bed.
00:23:28Then I guess just you and me will be closing up tonight, huh?
00:23:36Hey, Bowie!
00:23:42You know, I'm getting blind.
00:23:45Well, don't expect me to lead you home.
00:23:53Everything okay?
00:23:54Couldn't be better.
00:23:55Better bring us a couple more on him.
00:23:57Again?
00:23:58I'd better start showing you how.
00:24:00You can give me lessons anytime, Billy.
00:24:03No lessons from me, Buster.
00:24:05I don't play games.
00:24:07Hey, Billy, what do you want to hear?
00:24:09Same one.
00:24:10Aren't you tired of that song yet?
00:24:12I never get tired of it.
00:24:13It really sends me.
00:24:21Just a minute, I'll see if he's here.
00:24:24Clancy!
00:24:25Your wife!
00:24:36He's not here, Mrs. Clancy.
00:24:43Two ryes, one scotch and the rocks.
00:25:06One fifty.
00:25:13I'll hang it up, Matt.
00:25:36Can I do anything?
00:25:37No, I can get the rest.
00:25:38See you tomorrow.
00:25:39Night.
00:25:40Very good.
00:25:51What's that song remind you of?
00:25:53A hard romance or something?
00:25:56No.
00:25:59Could, though.
00:26:02You sure play it enough.
00:26:04I guess it's driving you kind of nuts, huh?
00:26:08I won't forget it in a hurry.
00:26:11Drives me kind of nuts, too, in a way.
00:26:14Makes me think about Mexico.
00:26:18You ever been there, man?
00:26:20Uh-uh.
00:26:22I sure want to go to the bullfights, and sit in little sidewalk cafes, and drink wine, and listen to
00:26:35music.
00:26:37I want to dance, and make clothes, and be serenaded, and lay out in the sun all day, and get
00:26:52tan.
00:26:55Not too tan, though.
00:26:59They like blondes with fair skin down there.
00:27:07Mexico City.
00:27:13Acapulco.
00:27:43Yeah, yeah, who is it?
00:27:44It's me, Mrs. Walter.
00:27:47Go away, and let me sleep.
00:27:48I got your clean linen.
00:27:50I'll get them from you later.
00:27:52I can't keep climbing up the stairs ten times a day.
00:27:55Open up.
00:27:57Okay, okay, just a minute.
00:28:14It's all right with me if you want to sleep all day, but I got my own work to do.
00:28:17And a good morning to you, too.
00:28:20The rent's due.
00:28:22The new week started this morning.
00:28:23I'm surprised you didn't give it to a collection agency already.
00:28:26And if it ain't too much trouble, Miss Nash, don't play your phonograph so loud.
00:28:31I've been getting complaints from the other tenants.
00:28:33I realize you have a very exclusive clientele here.
00:28:37Pass my apologies along to the country club set.
00:29:08I'll see you later.
00:29:33Oh, I'm not worried about that, Billy.
00:29:37There.
00:29:38Now, be careful of those pins when you take it off.
00:29:40I will.
00:29:41Did you find out about your night off yet?
00:29:43Oh, I'll find out tonight.
00:29:44The boss said he'll tell me tonight.
00:29:46You know, there's a new show at the Spalding.
00:29:48When you find out tonight, I'll get the tickets.
00:29:50Great.
00:29:50Be sure to get the skirt tied up, will you, Charlie?
00:29:52Oh, I will.
00:29:53You know, if you'd rather, we could just go dancing and have dinner at the Coliseum.
00:29:56Oh, that's okay with me if you'd rather do that.
00:29:58Do you think you can have the skirt ready tonight?
00:30:00Oh, I'll start on it right away.
00:30:02Now, I have no preference.
00:30:03We can go to either the Spalding or the Coliseum, whichever you say.
00:30:07Maybe we'll do both.
00:30:08Oh, that's a great idea.
00:30:09And I'll close the shop early that night.
00:30:11Be sure to have the skirt ready tonight, Charlie.
00:30:13I'll really need it.
00:30:13I will, Billy.
00:30:22Two and a quarter.
00:30:23That guy Cutler from the employment agency is here.
00:30:25He's over in the booth.
00:30:27Oh, him.
00:30:39Thanks, honey.
00:30:41Thanks, honey.
00:30:45One and a quarter.
00:30:50Oh, my.
00:30:52This breaks me.
00:30:57I'll have to tell the old lady I get held up.
00:31:03Hi.
00:31:04Hello.
00:31:05How's everything going, Miss Land?
00:31:07I didn't do too good this first week.
00:31:09Oh, I see.
00:31:10All together with salary and tips, I made $57.
00:31:12$57?
00:31:14I can't help it if the tips aren't so good.
00:31:16Oh, of course.
00:31:18Well, maybe they'll improve.
00:31:19I hope so.
00:31:20Let's see.
00:31:20That makes your commission $19, right?
00:31:22That's right.
00:31:24Thanks.
00:31:26Uh, how about having a drink with me?
00:31:29Can't.
00:31:30It's against the rules.
00:31:31You've broken the rules before.
00:31:34Matthew, you mean what?
00:31:35I'm afraid I'll have to prevail upon your good nature for a little credit for the rest of the evening.
00:31:40Clancy, remember what your wife said.
00:31:42No more tabs.
00:31:43Oh, Matthew, you misunderstood the good woman completely.
00:31:45What she meant was no more tabs during...
00:31:48Oh, did she now?
00:31:49Yeah, I saw that her effect just tonight.
00:31:51She said to me, clancy me, darling.
00:31:53She said, why don't you go down to Matthew's place and help yourself?
00:32:00What happened?
00:32:02He was reaching for something and slipped.
00:32:04Bannister, this girl assaulted me.
00:32:06If you ever try that again, I'll really give you a working over.
00:32:08Beat it.
00:32:09Just a minute, Bannister.
00:32:10Get out before I throw you out.
00:32:12Take it easy, Matt.
00:32:13I'd beat it if I were you, mister.
00:32:15What's going on?
00:32:16Nothing, Dora.
00:32:17This crumbum made a pass.
00:32:19Oh, it's you.
00:32:20Look, do me a favor, will you?
00:32:21Don't come in here.
00:32:22Take your business someplace else.
00:32:25Gladly.
00:32:28You okay, honey?
00:32:29Sure, Dora.
00:32:35Is she okay?
00:32:36I thought she'd fractured his skull.
00:32:38I've never seen Matt so sore before.
00:32:40Me neither.
00:32:44Let me have another treat, will you, Matt?
00:32:49Dirty skunk.
00:32:50Take it easy.
00:32:50These guys got eyes and ears, you know.
00:32:52I should have broken his neck.
00:32:54I can't stand to have these guys ever look at you.
00:32:57I know, hon.
00:32:59We've got to be careful of Dora.
00:33:01Who cares about Dora?
00:33:23Loaded again.
00:33:25I don't know where she gets the stuff.
00:33:27You haven't served on the drinks, have you?
00:33:28You know I wouldn't do a thing like that.
00:33:30She must keep her bottle hidden.
00:33:33Why don't you have Gus drive her home?
00:33:37Gus.
00:33:38Yeah?
00:33:39Drive Dora home.
00:33:41What makes you think I want to go home?
00:33:43Because you're no good here.
00:33:44You can hardly stand on your feet.
00:33:46Ah, you make me sick.
00:33:48You and your neck, and you make me sick to my stomach.
00:33:51Come on, Gus.
00:33:52Take me home.
00:33:53This place is beginning to bore me anyhow.
00:33:57Night, Billy.
00:33:58Night, Dora.
00:33:59See you tomorrow.
00:34:04I can't stand it.
00:34:05I can't stand the thought of you going home to her every night.
00:34:07It doesn't mean anything.
00:34:08We don't get along anymore.
00:34:11Let's you and me go away together, man.
00:34:14Go away?
00:34:16Where?
00:34:17Mexico.
00:34:18We'll go to Mexico, and we'll do all the things I told you about.
00:34:20Just the two of us.
00:34:21I can't leave just like that.
00:34:22What about this place?
00:34:23I got a big stake in it.
00:34:24Sell the place.
00:34:25Sell the place, and we'll take the money and go to Mexico.
00:34:27Are you crazy?
00:34:27What do you mean, sell the place?
00:34:29What about Dora?
00:34:30What about Dora?
00:34:31You hate her, you know you do.
00:34:32She's nothing but a no-good Lush, and you hate her for her.
00:34:34I don't hate her, and don't say she's no good.
00:34:37Dora's okay when she's not drinking.
00:34:38I wouldn't sell this place.
00:34:40It's half hers.
00:34:41She wouldn't have a quarter if it wasn't for you.
00:34:43I know all about how old man drank the place in the hot.
00:34:45You're talking like a lunatic, Billy.
00:34:47Now shut up and stop talking like that.
00:34:49I'm not going to sell this place, and I'm not going to Mexico or anywhere else.
00:34:53Okay.
00:34:55Okay, if that's the way you feel about it.
00:35:01Where are you going?
00:35:02Home.
00:35:03I'm tired.
00:35:03You've got work to do.
00:35:05You love the place so much, you do it.
00:35:06I'm tired, and I'm going home.
00:35:08And another thing.
00:35:09You can look for a new girl at the end of the week.
00:35:11I'm quitting.
00:35:12Quitting?
00:35:13You stay in this hole you dug for yourself, but don't expect me to hang around until it's six feet
00:35:16deep.
00:35:29Oh, good evening, Billy.
00:35:30You're home a little early, aren't you?
00:35:32Stop keeping a timetable on me.
00:35:33I don't like it, see?
00:35:34Oh, please don't be angry.
00:35:36I'm anxious to know if you found out about your night off.
00:35:38No, I didn't.
00:35:39I don't intend to.
00:35:39Now get out and stop bothering me.
00:35:41But what about our date?
00:35:42You said...
00:35:42I don't care what I said.
00:35:43Get out of here, leave me alone, will you?
00:35:45Billy, I don't understand you.
00:35:47Do you think I'd go out with an undersized runt like you?
00:35:49Don't make me laugh.
00:35:50I wouldn't be caught dead with you.
00:35:51Don't you dare call me a runt.
00:35:53Runt, runt, run.
00:35:54You're nothing but an apostle, little runt.
00:35:56If you don't keep out of my hand, I'm going to step on you like a buck.
00:35:58Knock it out.
00:35:58I don't care what I said.
00:36:39I don't care what I said.
00:37:19Who is it?
00:37:20It's me, Matt.
00:37:22Can you come back in a little while?
00:37:24No, I want to see you right away.
00:37:27Okay, just a minute.
00:37:27Bye, bye, bye, bye, bye, bye, bye, bye.
00:37:30Oh, my God.
00:38:06What do you want?
00:38:12The guy came to see me a couple of months ago about buying a place.
00:38:15I'm going to look him up.
00:38:18Come here.
00:38:25I couldn't sleep last night thinking about you.
00:38:28I'm so crazy about you, I don't know what I'm doing.
00:38:30Oh, that's how it's with me, Matt.
00:38:39I've got to think of a way to sell without letting Dora know.
00:38:41Do you have to tell her about it?
00:38:43The name's got to be on the papers.
00:38:45Why don't you tell her you want to buy another place, a bigger place?
00:38:47Maybe she'd go for that.
00:38:48All right, she's attached to this place because of her old man.
00:38:50She'd never agree to sell.
00:38:52There's another way, Matt.
00:38:54If you've got the nerve, forge it.
00:38:58You sign her name to the papers.
00:39:01They put you away a long time for that.
00:39:03By the time they find out, we'll be in Mexico.
00:39:04No, they have a way to find you.
00:39:06They'll trace you down there and bring you back.
00:39:07It's too much of a chance.
00:39:12Then what are we going to do, hon?
00:39:14We're right back where we started.
00:39:22Give me a little time.
00:39:24I'll think of something.
00:39:26You and me together in Mexico.
00:39:27Can't you see how terrific it'll be, Matt?
00:39:29Yeah.
00:39:33But don't ever let me hear you talk about leaving again.
00:39:37I couldn't leave you, Matt.
00:39:41I couldn't leave you if I wanted to.
00:39:48Hey, Dora, that stove's giving me trouble again.
00:39:51I thought the guy fixed it.
00:39:52Yeah, he fixed it so good I almost had a fire just now.
00:39:54Okay, okay, I'll take care of it.
00:39:56Here's your check.
00:39:57What is this, my birthday or something?
00:39:59You gave it to me last night.
00:40:01Are you sure?
00:40:02Sure, I'm sure.
00:40:02Don't you remember?
00:40:03You gave it to me when I brought you the meat bill.
00:40:06That's funny.
00:40:10I said it all right.
00:40:11Here's the meat bill.
00:40:14Must have slipped my mind.
00:40:15Come take a look at that stove, will you?
00:40:17I don't want to be responsible for no accidents.
00:40:19Okay, okay.
00:40:22Slipped her mind.
00:40:23So drunk she can't remember.
00:40:25Has this happened before?
00:40:26Plenty of times.
00:40:27When she's loaded, she can do anything.
00:40:29Then getting her signature is no problem.
00:40:31A lot of things can happen.
00:40:32It's too risky.
00:40:34No, it ain't, Matt.
00:40:34There'll be a cinch to get a drunk.
00:40:36I know we can do it.
00:40:38Let me think about it.
00:40:43Your star is in its ascendancy during this period.
00:40:47That's this week.
00:40:48It is an excellent time to make business and financial transactions and new associations.
00:40:57Do not pro-procrastinate, or you may sacrifice valuable business opportunities.
00:41:03See, it's right here in the book under your sign.
00:41:04We've got to do it right away, Matt.
00:41:06I don't believe in that junk.
00:41:07It ain't junk.
00:41:08You'd be amazed at how many of these things come true.
00:41:10Some of the biggest people swear by it.
00:41:12Maybe I ought to talk to Dora.
00:41:13Maybe I can get her to sell.
00:41:15You know she won't.
00:41:16Besides, she might get why something's up.
00:41:18She's a pretty smart dame, you know.
00:41:19I can tell her I want a divorce.
00:41:21We could sell her place and split the money.
00:41:24She'll never let you go, Matt.
00:41:26Or else she'd grab all the dough.
00:41:32You think you can get her drunk enough to sign without reading the papers?
00:41:35Leave Dora to me.
00:41:36What if she gets suspicious about you slipping her drinks?
00:41:38You haven't done it before.
00:41:39If you won't get suspicious, I'll handle that.
00:41:41You get the papers and I'll get her signature.
00:41:45Well, I better go see Lowry.
00:41:47I told him I meet him at 11.
00:41:49You're sure he wants to buy the place?
00:41:50Yeah, he wants to buy.
00:41:51Good luck, hon.
00:42:03Don't keep Mr. Lowry waiting.
00:42:08I just put that refrigerator in about a month ago.
00:42:10It cost me nearly 500.
00:42:12Those booths take up a lot of room.
00:42:13Tables and chairs might be better.
00:42:15Yeah, but the crown I got likes them.
00:42:16Where do you grow some money?
00:42:17About 4,000 average.
00:42:20Take a look.
00:42:22Care for a drink?
00:42:23No, thanks.
00:42:24How come you're so anxious to sell all of a sudden?
00:42:27My wife hasn't been feeling too good.
00:42:29It's too rough on her.
00:42:30Maybe business has fallen off a little, too.
00:42:32You're looking at the figures.
00:42:33They're right up to date.
00:42:34Yeah, but how do I know they're right?
00:42:36Look, Lowry, I don't like cracks like that.
00:42:39Well, what are you getting sore about?
00:42:41I was only kidding.
00:42:42I remember, though, you telling me it was your wife who was so set on not selling before.
00:42:46She changed her mind.
00:42:47Of course, the price you're asking is a little steep.
00:42:50It's a good buy of 30,000, and you know it.
00:42:52Maybe it is, but I've bought a couple other places since I saw you last.
00:42:55A little short on cash.
00:42:56Of course, you'd like to take 10 down and carry a mortgage.
00:42:58No, that's out.
00:43:00I want all cash.
00:43:01The best I can do is $22,500.
00:43:04Maybe I can stretch it to $23,000.
00:43:06Stretch it to $25,000 and it's a deal.
00:43:09It's a deal.
00:43:09I'll get my lawyer to drop the papers.
00:43:11They should be ready Wednesday or Thursday.
00:43:13Make it Wednesday.
00:43:13Okay, Wednesday.
00:43:14I'll get to work on it.
00:43:16I'll see you, Bannister.
00:43:18So long, Lowry.
00:43:22Now, Wednesday night, you go to work the same as usual.
00:43:24There'll be a big stink when you get there,
00:43:25and you're just as surprised as everybody else is that Lowry's bought the place.
00:43:28And you're very sympathetic with Doris, see?
00:43:30But you're still worried about your job.
00:43:32Lowry will keep you on.
00:43:33Don't worry about that.
00:43:35So you stay there a couple of days.
00:43:37Now, you better make that a week.
00:43:38It'll look better.
00:43:39Then you get in a beef with Lowry and quit and go back to Chicago.
00:43:42From there, take a plane to San Antonio,
00:43:44and I'll be waiting for you.
00:43:45Gosh, I'll die being away from you for a whole week, Bannister.
00:43:48You're going to make this look good.
00:43:49Besides, I need this time to get us some papers to cross the border.
00:43:52Aren't you excited?
00:43:53Yeah.
00:43:55I'm excited.
00:43:57And a little scared, too.
00:43:59Me, too.
00:44:00That'll be worth it, won't it?
00:44:12I'll see you tonight, baby.
00:44:43There you are, Miss.
00:44:43Mrs. Johnson.
00:44:44One way to Fort Worth.
00:44:46The plane leaves Wednesday at 4.55.
00:44:50Does your husband have transportation to the airport?
00:44:52Yes, I'm taking him.
00:44:54I hope he has a very nice trip.
00:45:04Hello?
00:45:07Yeah, Matt.
00:45:10What?
00:45:11What?
00:45:11What happened?
00:45:12I don't want to talk over the phone.
00:45:14The whole deal's off, that's all.
00:45:16Did that party back out?
00:45:18Can't you give me an idea?
00:45:20She didn't find out, did she?
00:45:21Look, I told you I'm not going to tell you over the phone.
00:45:24Just get down to the place early tonight.
00:45:25Perfect.
00:45:27Okay.
00:45:41There was a lawyer who gummed it up.
00:45:43He wants to order to sign the papers in his office.
00:45:45Why didn't you tell Lowry she was sick or something?
00:45:46I tried that.
00:45:47He said he was willing to postpone it a few days.
00:45:49You could have said you were in a rush.
00:45:50I did, but then he got leery.
00:45:52He figured I waited all this time to sell.
00:45:53A couple of more days wouldn't matter.
00:45:54Why isn't her signature enough?
00:45:56I don't know.
00:45:57Maybe Lowry's wise to us.
00:45:59I gotta phone him and call the whole thing off.
00:46:01What about us, Matt?
00:46:05Well, I got a few bucks.
00:46:07Not enough to go to Mexico, but we can go someplace.
00:46:11Maybe later we can go to Mexico.
00:46:13There's never any later, Matt.
00:46:17Believe me, I know.
00:46:19I'm around from town to town,
00:46:21living in stinking furnished rooms,
00:46:23and there's never any later.
00:46:25Look, I tried, didn't I?
00:46:26It didn't work.
00:46:28Lowry expects me to bring Dora to his lawyers
00:46:31at 11 o'clock tomorrow.
00:46:32What do you want me to do?
00:46:33Hypnotize her?
00:46:33Dora!
00:46:35I wish she was dead.
00:46:37Don't talk like that, Billy.
00:46:38I wish she was dead, and you do, too.
00:46:39I can see your face when you look at me.
00:46:41Don't say that.
00:46:41Don't say it.
00:46:42Why?
00:46:42Because it's true?
00:46:44You don't, don't you?
00:46:44You don't wish she was dead.
00:47:02The devil's for Dora.
00:47:03Keep feeding them to her.
00:47:05One fifty.
00:47:08I'm not calling on Larry.
00:47:09I got something in mind.
00:47:10I'll tell you about it later.
00:47:11What is it?
00:47:12I can't talk now, can I?
00:47:14Where'd we get a chance to be alone
00:47:15and keep feeding Dora?
00:47:24Is he looking?
00:47:26No, he's busy at the other end.
00:47:30This one's on me.
00:47:33Thanks.
00:47:34I sure need it tonight.
00:47:36You're a pal, Billy.
00:47:38What would I do without you?
00:47:41I'll see you next time around.
00:47:47Billy's working too hard.
00:47:51Why don't you take a night off
00:47:53and have a good time for yourself?
00:47:57Thanks, Dora.
00:47:57I'd rather make the money.
00:47:59Ha ha ha.
00:48:00A good-looking girl like you
00:48:02ought to find yourself a boyfriend.
00:48:06You're a good kid.
00:48:09You deserve it.
00:48:11Come on, Dora.
00:48:12Let's get going.
00:48:13Don't wait too long, Billy.
00:48:17The young one's like young girls,
00:48:19but the old one's like them even younger.
00:48:25It's getting late, Dora.
00:48:27Finish your drink.
00:48:28No, don't rush me.
00:48:29Don't rush me.
00:48:40Okay, let's go.
00:48:43Give me a hand.
00:48:58What is it, Matt?
00:48:59Tell me, what's it all about?
00:49:00I've got to talk fast.
00:49:01You might wake up.
00:49:03Are you willing to take a chance?
00:49:04A long chance?
00:49:05Yeah, sure.
00:49:06Anything.
00:49:06Tell me, what's it all about?
00:49:07You're going with me
00:49:08to the lawyer's office tomorrow.
00:49:10You're going to be Dora Bannister.
00:49:11Me?
00:49:12Be Dora?
00:49:13We never get away with that.
00:49:14Larry's never met Dora.
00:49:15He's never even seen her.
00:49:16You signed the papers
00:49:16just like you were her.
00:49:18Can you do it?
00:49:19Yeah, sure.
00:49:20I think so.
00:49:21No, you can't think so, Billy.
00:49:22You've got to know so.
00:49:23There can't be any false starts.
00:49:24You've got to know we don't try.
00:49:25What if something goes wrong?
00:49:26Well, that's a chance we take.
00:49:27But nobody would think
00:49:28we'd have the nerve
00:49:29to pull anything like this.
00:49:31Are you game?
00:49:32Bet I'm game.
00:49:33Good.
00:49:34I'll see you tomorrow morning at 10.
00:49:36After.
00:49:37See you in the morning.
00:49:39Good night, darling.
00:49:45Good night.
00:49:59Your name is Farnham, not Farman.
00:50:02Now, don't forget,
00:50:03your legal name is Dora Farnham Bannister.
00:50:06That's F-A-R-N-H-A-M.
00:50:09Okay.
00:50:10Let me try it again.
00:50:12My name is Dora Farnham Bannister.
00:50:15I was born in Pittsburgh,
00:50:17June 16, 1920.
00:50:20The name of my parents
00:50:21was Sam and Dorothy Farnham.
00:50:23My mother died when I was a kid.
00:50:26I came to live here
00:50:27when I was 14 years old
00:50:29at 1254 Dawson Street.
00:50:33I had one brother.
00:50:37Roy?
00:50:38Roy?
00:50:38I had one brother, Roy,
00:50:40who was killed in the war.
00:50:42I now live at 868 Grand Avenue.
00:50:45We've been living there
00:50:46since we were married in...
00:50:49May 1949.
00:50:51No, no, no, no, no.
00:50:53That's when your old man died.
00:50:55We were married October 4, 1946.
00:50:58All right, all right.
00:50:59You don't have to snap my head off.
00:51:01What's this going to be anyway, Equitio?
00:51:02Billy, anything can happen in that office.
00:51:04One slip and we're dead.
00:51:05If you don't want to go through with it, say so.
00:51:10Look, we're both on edge.
00:51:12But let's not take it out on each other.
00:51:14Stop worrying.
00:51:15I'll handle it, okay?
00:51:19I'm sorry.
00:51:24We'd better get going.
00:51:25It's a quarter of 11.
00:51:26Got the deed?
00:51:27Yeah.
00:51:30I can hardly believe it.
00:51:31In a few hours, we'll be on our way to Mexico.
00:51:33Yeah.
00:51:34Boy, well, I'd be glad to get out of this rat hole.
00:51:36Come on, we'd better take that down the back way.
00:51:38If the old lady sees us carrying it,
00:51:39she's liable to get nosy.
00:51:40Okay, let's go.
00:51:45You scared?
00:51:46I feel like I got an egg beater going around in my stomach.
00:51:48That makes two of us.
00:51:54Mr. and Mrs. Bannister are here.
00:51:55Have them come right in.
00:51:56Go right in, please.
00:52:00Well, right on the dot.
00:52:01Hi, Larry.
00:52:02I'd like you to meet my wife.
00:52:03How do you do?
00:52:04You never told me you had such a nice-looking wife.
00:52:06This is my attorney, Bill Porter.
00:52:08How do you do?
00:52:09The pleasure's mine.
00:52:09Glad to know you.
00:52:10Glad to know you.
00:52:11Won't you sit down?
00:52:12Will you have this chair, Mrs. Bannister?
00:52:14Sorry to get you out of a sick bed.
00:52:16This matter could have waited a few days.
00:52:18Oh, that's quite all right.
00:52:18I'm feeling much better now, thank you.
00:52:20These attacks come and go.
00:52:21Well, as long as I'm the lawyer for all parties,
00:52:24I like to know the principles involved.
00:52:26Oh, I understand.
00:52:30Yes, sir?
00:52:31Bring in the papers on the Lowry-Bannister deal.
00:52:34Yes, Mr. Porter.
00:52:35Right away.
00:52:38You and your husband planning a little vacation?
00:52:40We were thinking about it.
00:52:42I want to take her up to the Northwest.
00:52:43Say, that's good fishing up there.
00:52:45I've been there a couple of times.
00:52:47Do you fish?
00:52:47Oh, I used to.
00:52:48Not lately, then.
00:52:50Oh, thank you.
00:52:52Now, this shouldn't take very long.
00:52:54I've drawn up a very simple agreement.
00:52:56Would you care to look at the papers?
00:52:58He's the businessman in the family.
00:53:00Very well.
00:53:05Are you native to these parts?
00:53:07No, I was born in Pittsburgh.
00:53:09I came here when I was quite young, though.
00:53:11Fourteen to be exact.
00:53:12Well, that makes you practically a native.
00:53:14Where did you go to school?
00:53:17I was never much interested in school.
00:53:20I quit after the 11th grade.
00:53:23I thought you'd tell me you graduated from Wilson High.
00:53:26Well, almost graduated.
00:53:28You see, Mr. Porter, you're revealing my secret past.
00:53:31That's my error.
00:53:33So you went to Wilson, huh?
00:53:34I've got a boy going there now.
00:53:36I suppose you remember Mr. Rigby, the vice principal there?
00:53:41Who could forget him?
00:53:43Well, this seems okay to me.
00:53:45Yeah, me too.
00:53:46Good.
00:53:47Do you have the deed?
00:53:58Now, if you will just sign these right here on the second line.
00:54:11And now the deed.
00:54:14Here.
00:54:21Now, Mr. Bannister.
00:54:30I understand the bar's been in your family for years now.
00:54:34Yes, my father owned it, but he died about four years ago.
00:54:37Oh, that's too bad.
00:54:44Well, then does it.
00:54:46I think we both made a good deal.
00:54:48I'm satisfied.
00:54:49That's what I like to hear.
00:54:50Now, I'll put these papers in escrow right away, and you'll get your check just as soon
00:54:54as they come through.
00:54:56Escrow?
00:54:57Well, yes.
00:54:58Necessary routine in any transfer of property, clearance of title and such things.
00:55:01It won't take long.
00:55:03Well, how long?
00:55:04Oh, maybe ten days.
00:55:05But we wanted to start on our vacation right away.
00:55:08Maybe you could speed it up a little, Bill.
00:55:09Well, I could ask them to rush it at the bank as a personal favor.
00:55:12Maybe three or four days.
00:55:13How's that?
00:55:15Swell.
00:55:16I've enjoyed meeting you, Mrs. Bannister.
00:55:18Same here.
00:55:19You too, Mr. Bannister.
00:55:20Thanks.
00:55:21See you, Larry.
00:55:22I'll keep in touch with you.
00:55:23Give me a ring the first part of the week.
00:55:24I'll do that.
00:55:30So that's Mrs. Bannister.
00:55:32Too bad she doesn't go with the deal.
00:55:34Yeah.
00:55:45What's with this escrow business?
00:55:46Why don't you know about that escrow thing?
00:55:47Because I didn't.
00:55:48What do you think I am, a real estate agent or something?
00:55:50I never sold any property before.
00:55:51I would have known this was going to happen.
00:55:52I never would have come.
00:55:53You said you wanted to go through with it, didn't you?
00:55:55Yeah, but I thought you knew what you were doing.
00:55:56I'm the one that signed Doris Day into the papers, not you.
00:55:59I'm the one that was there for forgery, not you.
00:56:00They hand out a pretty good rap for fraud, too.
00:56:03I mean, this is as deep as you are.
00:56:04We're both into it up to our necks.
00:56:07Best thing we can do is get out of town.
00:56:10What?
00:56:11And leave that $25,000?
00:56:12Nobody suspects anything yet.
00:56:14We've got to wait it out until the check comes through.
00:56:17Next couple of days, we'll be sitting on a pack of dynamite.
00:56:20Well, we've gone this far.
00:56:21We've got to go all the way.
00:56:23Come on, drive me to the ticket agency.
00:56:24I want to get a refund on that plane ticket.
00:56:29You know, you've got more guts than any dame I ever saw.
00:56:41Yeah.
00:56:46Yeah, just a minute.
00:56:58What do you want?
00:56:59I'm busy.
00:56:59I wouldn't be quite so snippy if I were you, Miss Nash.
00:57:02Don't you tell me how to be.
00:57:03Get out of here and stop bothering me.
00:57:05You change your tune when you find out what I know.
00:57:08Take your hand off that door.
00:57:13What do you mean, what you know?
00:57:15You'd better telephone your boss and tell him you won't be working tonight.
00:57:18What's the matter with you?
00:57:19You lost your marvel to something?
00:57:20You promised me we'd spend a little evening together, didn't you?
00:57:24Well, tonight you're going to keep that promise.
00:57:27I bought dinner for the two of us.
00:57:29So you better phone your boss and tell him you won't be working tonight.
00:57:34Well, else I might have a little talk with Dora Bannister.
00:57:39How do you know, Dora?
00:57:42You're wondering how much I do know, aren't you?
00:57:46Well, I overheard you two talking the other night when he brought you home.
00:57:50Oh, that didn't mean anything, Charlie.
00:57:52As a matter of fact, I don't even remember what we're talking about.
00:57:54I guess I was a little high.
00:57:55No.
00:57:56Well, I remember.
00:57:58So you better make that telephone call.
00:58:00I've got to be at work tonight, Charlie.
00:58:01I'll lose my job if I don't.
00:58:03No, Billy.
00:58:04I don't think Mr. Bannister would fire you.
00:58:07It's terribly important that I be there tonight, Charlie.
00:58:09I'll tell you what.
00:58:10Why don't I come over to your place after work tonight and we'll have a late supper and a few
00:58:13drinks.
00:58:13How's that?
00:58:14You don't think I'm such a little lunt now, do you, Billy?
00:58:17Of course not, Charlie.
00:58:19I was just in a bad humor.
00:58:20I didn't mean what I said.
00:58:22And you will show up, won't you?
00:58:24I will, I promise.
00:58:26And you won't be late.
00:58:28I'll hurry.
00:58:29I'll be here just as soon as I'm through.
00:58:31I like you, Billy.
00:58:33I like you more than I've ever liked anyone before in my life.
00:58:42So, get here as soon as you can.
00:58:44I will, Charlie.
00:58:59What's the rush?
00:58:59Take it easy.
00:59:00You'll last longer.
00:59:01I'm in kind of a hurry tonight.
00:59:03What is it?
00:59:03A date?
00:59:04Oh, no.
00:59:05Nothing like that.
00:59:05I just have a few things to do at home.
00:59:09What time is it, anyway?
00:59:14It's early at 2.20.
00:59:17I can finish up, boy, if you want to beat it.
00:59:19That's okay, Joe.
00:59:20I'm just about through with these.
00:59:22Want to give me a shot, man?
00:59:23Come on.
00:59:38What?
00:59:39No lectures tonight?
00:59:42What do you know about that, Billy?
00:59:44No lectures.
00:59:46Next thing you know, he'll break down and have a couple himself.
00:59:50Care to join me?
00:59:51No, thanks, Dora.
00:59:52I have to hurry.
00:59:53Anything else you want me to do, Matt?
00:59:54I'm all through with those.
00:59:56Well, we can finish up.
00:59:56You can beat it.
01:00:01Night.
01:00:02Night, Billy.
01:00:05She can't fool me.
01:00:07She's got a hot date.
01:00:33Hello, Charlie.
01:00:35I've been waiting for you, Billy.
01:00:37Come in.
01:00:49How are we doing?
01:00:49Okay, Gus.
01:00:56Where's Dora?
01:00:57She had to go to a baby shower.
01:00:58She'll be down later tonight.
01:00:59Did you call the lawyer?
01:01:00Yeah.
01:01:02He said it'd be a day or two more.
01:01:03What's he trying to pull?
01:01:04He told us three or four days.
01:01:06He said they were busy at the bank.
01:01:07Maybe he's suspicious of something.
01:01:09Maybe he's wise to the whole thing.
01:01:11I feel like the top of my head's coming off just thinking about it.
01:01:14Take it easy, man.
01:01:15Every time somebody walks in that door, I'd break out in a cold sweat.
01:01:20Hey, Matt, that stove's still acting up.
01:01:22She told Dora about it, didn't she?
01:01:24Sure, I told her.
01:01:24I told her the other night, but she ain't done nothing about it.
01:01:26She probably forgot.
01:01:27Tell her again.
01:01:28I'm the one who has to stand over.
01:01:29Rachel, I'll have to blow up in my face.
01:01:34Hello.
01:01:35Yeah.
01:01:40Okay.
01:01:42What time you'll be in?
01:01:45Sure.
01:01:46See you later.
01:01:49Lowry.
01:01:51He's coming in tonight.
01:02:05I called that place twice.
01:02:07I'm not calling again.
01:02:21Hi, Lowry.
01:02:22Hello, Bannister.
01:02:23Well, it looks like I'll be taking over tomorrow night.
01:02:25What do you mean?
01:02:27The lawyer said the escrow would take a couple more days.
01:02:29I spoke to him after I phoned him.
01:02:31He said he got a call from the bank.
01:02:32Everything will be ready tomorrow at 2 o'clock.
01:02:35Well, that's great.
01:02:37What are you drinking?
01:02:38Oh, it's scotch.
01:02:45You should be locked.
01:02:47You'll do okay.
01:02:49You're a savage for a weeknight?
01:02:51A little slow tonight.
01:02:53Might pick up later.
01:02:54I think your wife wants you.
01:03:00Help yourself.
01:03:01Thanks.
01:03:04The deal's going through.
01:03:05We get the check at 2 o'clock tomorrow.
01:03:07Call the house and find out if Dora's still there.
01:03:09I'll stick close to Lowry.
01:03:15Hey, Billy.
01:03:16Be back in a minute.
01:03:17Cornbeet makes me very thirsty.
01:03:25Hi there.
01:03:27Oh, Mrs. Bannister, I didn't know you weren't in the place.
01:03:29Hey, Billy.
01:03:30How about bringing us another round?
01:03:32Okay, coming up.
01:03:34Why don't you call me Billy?
01:03:35Everybody else does.
01:03:36Oh, I see.
01:03:37Sort of a nickname, huh?
01:03:38Yeah, I don't work regular.
01:03:39Just to fill in for our girl on the night off.
01:03:41Oh, I see.
01:03:42That friend of mine left the house and was on the way over.
01:03:45Should be here any minute.
01:03:46Hey, Billy.
01:03:48Okay, coming.
01:03:49Let me have two rides, would you?
01:03:51You seem to get along very well with the customers.
01:03:53Too bad you don't come with the place.
01:03:54We get a nice bunch in here.
01:03:56You'll like our regular girl, though.
01:03:57She's real good.
01:03:57I'm sure I will.
01:04:01Excuse me.
01:04:04What are you doing, neglecting us?
01:04:06You know I wouldn't neglect you, Marley.
01:04:11How about another drink?
01:04:12I think I'll have one more than I'll shove off.
01:04:16If I'm putting my brother-in-law in here to run the place,
01:04:18I'd appreciate it if you'd drop in tomorrow night.
01:04:29Why don't you keep that thing turned down?
01:04:31You want to blast everybody out of here?
01:04:35She acts like she owns the place.
01:04:37Oh, a box worse than a bite.
01:04:41Hey, daughter.
01:04:42What must a man do to get a drink around here?
01:04:44How do you usually get it?
01:04:46Ask for it.
01:04:47Billy.
01:04:49Hey, Billy.
01:04:52Get Clancy here a drink before he collapses of thirst.
01:04:55I have a terrible thirst tonight.
01:04:57Terrible.
01:04:58How about you, Farrell?
01:04:59Yeah, hit me again.
01:05:04What's going on up front?
01:05:06Oh, nothing, Dora.
01:05:06Just an old friend of mine dropped in.
01:05:08One scotch in the rocks, one Irish whiskey.
01:05:09I'll bet that's the friend you've been rushing off to meet every night.
01:05:12Oh, no, really, Dora.
01:05:13It's just an old friend.
01:05:15You can't get me.
01:05:16I know when you've got a hot day.
01:05:17Which one is he?
01:05:18One evening.
01:05:20No, really, Dora.
01:05:20You got it all wrong.
01:05:21You're getting all hunted.
01:05:23Come on.
01:05:23I want to meet him.
01:05:24Hey, Dora.
01:05:25Can I tell you a minute?
01:05:25That stove's still on the plate.
01:05:27I was only joking.
01:05:28No, it's okay.
01:05:34I've got to get going.
01:05:35I'll see you at the bank tomorrow.
01:05:36Two o'clock, right?
01:05:37Yeah.
01:05:38Good night, Bannister.
01:05:40So long, Lowry.
01:05:43Good night, Mrs. Bannister.
01:05:44I'll probably see you at the bank tomorrow.
01:05:46Yeah, I'll be there.
01:05:47Don't forget to drop in when you get back from your vacation.
01:05:49I won't.
01:05:49What's this about a vacation?
01:05:51Oh, this is a friend of mine, Mr. Lowry.
01:05:53Hello.
01:05:53I guess we'll be seeing a lot of you.
01:05:55Yeah, I guess you will.
01:05:57Well, I've got to be running along now.
01:05:59I'll see you tomorrow.
01:06:00Yeah, good night.
01:06:00Good night.
01:06:03You can do better than that, Billy.
01:06:26I don't think I could go through that again.
01:06:27I must have lost 20 pounds when she walked up to Lowry.
01:06:31I could use a shot, man.
01:06:33You sure earned it, baby.
01:06:49Oh, it's on fire.
01:06:50It's on fire.
01:06:50Hey, get the barns, nigger.
01:06:52I told you it was going to happen.
01:06:53I told you.
01:06:54I told you.
01:06:54All right, shut up.
01:06:55Should I call the fire department?
01:06:56No.
01:07:01It's all right, everybody.
01:07:04It's all out.
01:07:05It wasn't much.
01:07:06The grease made a lot of smoke, doesn't it?
01:07:08It wasn't much.
01:07:08It could have blown up in my face.
01:07:10Shut up.
01:07:10You're getting just like an old lady.
01:07:13All right, drink up, folks.
01:07:14We're going to call it a night
01:07:15and let the place clear out.
01:07:21Night.
01:07:22Night, Billy.
01:07:23See you tomorrow.
01:07:44We'll call it a night.
01:08:19Yeah.
01:08:21It's me, Charlie.
01:08:22Just a minute.
01:08:41Hello.
01:08:42Hello.
01:08:46I didn't hear you come in.
01:08:48Were you trying to avoid me?
01:08:50Oh, no.
01:08:50I thought you were asleep.
01:08:52You know I wasn't asleep, Billy.
01:08:55I've been waiting for you.
01:08:57You knew I'd be waiting for you, didn't you?
01:09:00Sure, Charlie.
01:09:03Shall we, uh, have a little nightgap?
01:09:10Yeah, let's.
01:09:13That whole kitchen's got to be repainted.
01:09:16Insurance will cover it.
01:09:17You got your key to the safety deposit box?
01:09:21Yeah.
01:09:22Yeah.
01:09:23Why?
01:09:24Let me have it.
01:09:25I don't remember what I did with mine.
01:09:29What do you want it for?
01:09:30What do you think I want it for?
01:09:31I want to open that box and read that insurance policy in the morning.
01:09:35Well, you don't have to do that.
01:09:36Just call the company.
01:09:37They'll send out an adjuster.
01:09:38Look, I know what I'm doing.
01:09:40One of those clauses reads the way I think it does.
01:09:44We're going to get some new linoleum out of this.
01:09:46Just give me the key.
01:09:55Come on, let's get out of here.
01:09:57I'm tired.
01:09:59I think I'll stay around and take inventory.
01:10:02Again?
01:10:03You just took it a few weeks ago.
01:10:05I think I made a mistake.
01:10:06I want to check it.
01:10:07Well, you can do it alone.
01:10:08I'm not hanging around here to take inventory at this hour.
01:10:12If you had any sense, you'd get some sleep and do it tomorrow.
01:10:16I'm not sleepy.
01:10:18Besides, I feel like doing it tonight.
01:10:20Suit yourself.
01:10:22Put that away in the drawer.
01:10:23And try to walk softly when you come in tonight.
01:10:32No more for me, Charlie.
01:10:33I'm awful tired.
01:10:36Are you trying to get rid of me, Billy?
01:10:38No, it's just that I had a rough night, that's all.
01:10:41You're all trying to avoid me tonight, won't you?
01:10:44You shouldn't do that, you know, Billy.
01:10:46You should be nice to me.
01:10:48Real nice.
01:10:49I told you I liked you a lot, didn't I?
01:10:51I know, but you don't like me.
01:10:54You're afraid of me.
01:10:57Aren't you?
01:10:59Why should I be afraid of you, Charlie?
01:11:02Don't be afraid of me, dear.
01:11:05Please.
01:11:06Please don't feel afraid of me.
01:11:26Charlie, give me a chance to catch my breath.
01:11:37You dirty trash.
01:11:41Don't let me find my strength.
01:11:46Wait, Matt, you don't understand.
01:11:47I was going to leave Dorothy.
01:11:53Don't.
01:11:55Don't.
01:11:56Don't.
01:12:11Dirty, rotten tramp.
01:12:23Billy!
01:12:25Billy, all right!
01:12:26Billy!
01:12:30Billy, let me do it!
01:12:32Let me, let me!
01:12:33Oh, Billy, let me!
01:12:35Oh, come on, I hate me!
01:12:46Help me, help me!
01:12:56Oh, my God.
01:13:28Of all the dumb, stupid slobs.
01:13:30A little floozy flutters her eyes and wiggles her hips and you fall right in your fat face.
01:13:34All right, all right.
01:13:35So I was a chump.
01:13:36Drop it, will you?
01:13:36I'm sick of hearing about it.
01:13:38Well, that's tough.
01:13:38You're going to hear about it.
01:13:39You're going to hear about it plenty.
01:13:40I thought you had half a brain in that head of yours when I married you, but I guess I
01:13:43was wrong.
01:13:44Look, I told you I was wrong and I'm sorry.
01:13:46What more do you want me to do?
01:13:47Cut my throat?
01:13:48That's not a bad suggestion.
01:13:50Oh, please.
01:13:51Leave me alone for a minute, will you?
01:13:52No, I won't leave you alone.
01:13:55Well, I've talked it over with my client and he's agreed to forget the whole deal.
01:14:00I don't know why we're so good to him, Mr. Lowry.
01:14:02He doesn't deserve it.
01:14:04Thanks, Lowry.
01:14:05You too, Porter.
01:14:06That's okay, Bannister.
01:14:07I guess we all make prize suckers of ourselves once in a while.
01:14:10Yeah, except this is the prize sucker of all time.
01:14:13This is the champion dope of the world.
01:14:15Oh, you lay off and let your mouth rest for a minute.
01:14:17You're giving me a headache.
01:14:18Well, you give me an ache too.
01:14:20Now, I should have left him what my father told me.
01:14:22All right, all right.
01:14:23So, you should have listened to your father.
01:14:29By the way, I wonder whatever happened to the other Mrs. Bannister.
01:14:33How much is the ticket to New York?
01:14:35One way or round trip.
01:14:36One way.
01:14:37$53.50?
01:14:39Where can I go for $25?
01:14:41Well, let's see.
01:14:43The fare to St. Louis, $24.75.
01:14:46And to Kansas City, $23.50.
01:14:48Either one, doesn't matter.
01:14:51Well, there's a bus leaving for Kansas City in five minutes.
01:14:53Make it Kansas City.
01:14:54That'll be $23.50.
01:15:03One way to Kansas City.
01:15:09Here you are, miss.
01:15:10That's your bus there.
01:15:41Why is a wicked woman the devil in your brain, ready to waste your heart till you go mad?
01:15:55Heal up and live tomorrow, take all in trade for sorrow, find a new man and start over.
01:16:12Again.
