00:00You recently commented, Mr President, that if it were not for the United States,
00:04European countries would be speaking German.
00:07Dare I say that if it wasn't for us, you'd be speaking French.
00:14In just a few weeks, the United States and Canada
00:17will be among those to welcome the world as hosts of the FIFA World Cup.
00:22So in one sense, Mr President, as heads of state, we are joint hosts.
00:28We call this game, by the way, football, Mr President.
00:33And I can only say, as the head of state of five competing countries,
00:37I will be watching the matches closely with great enthusiasm.
00:41After all, we always like favourable odds.
00:45On this occasion, I cannot help noticing the readjustments to the East Wing, Mr President.
00:54Following your visit to Windsor Castle last year,
00:57and I'm sorry to say that we, British, of course,
01:01made our own small attempt at real estate redevelopment of the White House in 1814.
01:11Today, our partnerships in NATO and AUKUS
01:15deepen our technological and military cooperation
01:18and ensure that together we can meet the challenges of an increasingly complex and contested world.
01:26And speaking of submarine alliances,
01:29there was one particular AUKUS predecessor,
01:33launched from a UK shipyard in 1944,
01:38that served for the majority of her life attached to the 4th submarine squadron in Australia,
01:46playing a critical role during the war in the Pacific.
01:50Her name, HMS Trump.
01:55So tonight, Mr President,
01:58I am delighted to present to you, as a personal gift,
02:04the original bell,
02:06which hung on the conning tower of your valiant namesake,
02:11may it stand as a testimony
02:15to our nation's shared history and shining future.
02:20And should you ever need to get hold of us,
02:23or just give us a ring?
02:39It is not hard to see how important the relationship remains
02:45in matters both seen and unseen.
02:48My mother's first Prime Minister,
02:51Sir Winston Churchill,
02:52understood this so well.
02:55But then he himself was half American,
02:57a tradition of shared transatlantic heritage,
03:00which I am pleased to say is alive and well in the White House today.
03:05Indeed, such was the closeness
03:07that Sir Winston, while staying here in the White House,
03:11in those rooms you showed us upstairs,
03:14emerged naked from the bathtub
03:16to discover the door opening
03:18as President Roosevelt came in for a chat.
03:22with rapier wit,
03:24the President cast aside any embarrassment
03:28by declaring that
03:29the Prime Minister has nothing to conceal
03:32from the President of the United States.
03:34of the United States.
