Poco antes de renunciar a la Policía, el patrullero Wilmar Burbano, quien investigó durante más de un año a alias Papá Pitufo, grabó una conversación con el entonces jefe de Interpol, el coronel Mario Javier Durán. En el audio, Durán admite que hubo interferencias para frenar el proceso, respaldando así las denuncias de manipulación y amenazas contra los investigadores del caso de contrabando.
