A viral moment unfolded at the White House as King Charles III delivered a witty jab at Donald Trump, saying that without the British, Americans would be speaking French.

The remark, made during a formal state dinner, was a playful response to Trump’s earlier comment about Europe “speaking German.” The room reacted with laughter, but the speech quickly shifted to a powerful message about the enduring UK-US alliance.

From humour to geopolitics, King Charles highlighted the shared history, sacrifices, and partnerships between the two nations — including cooperation through NATO and AUKUS, and the ongoing global challenges like the Russian invasion of Ukraine.

Watch the full moment and decide — was it just friendly banter or a subtle diplomatic message?

00:25Thank you very much, please.
00:30We welcome, their Majesties, King Charles III.
00:55May it stand as a testimony to our nation's shared history
01:03and shining feuding.
01:11For 250 years, the ingenuity and the imagination of the people of the United States.
01:16Thank you very much.
01:35Indeed, you recently commented, Mr. President, that if it were not for the United States,
01:40European countries would be speaking German.
01:44So, dare I say that if it wasn't for us, you'd be speaking French.
02:00Of course, we both...
02:02Tonight, we are here to renew an indispensable alliance, which has long been a cornerstone
02:09of prosperity and security for both British and American citizens.
02:15Our people have fought and fallen together in defense of the values we cherish.
02:21Across the ocean and from coast to coast, we have traded, innovated and created together.
02:29We've stood together through the best and worst of times.
02:37And yes, we have had our moments of difficulty, even in more recent history.
02:43When my mother visited in 1957, not the least of her tasks was to help put the special back
02:50into our relationship after a crisis in the Middle East.
02:54Nearly 70 years on, it is hard to imagine anything like that happening today.
03:00But American leadership helped rebuild a shattered continent, playing a decisive role as a defender
03:11of freedom in Europe.
03:12We and I shall never forget that, not least as freedom is again under attack following Russia's
03:21invasion of Ukraine.
03:23Today, our partnerships in NATO and AUKUS deepen our technological and military cooperation
03:31and ensure that together we can meet the challenges of an increasingly complex and contested world.
03:40The story of Britain and America is one of reconciliation from adversaries to the closest of allies,
03:49not always perhaps following the straightest path.
03:52As you said yourself, Mr. President, during your own state visit at Windsor Castle last year,
03:58ours is an unbreakable bond of history and heritage, culture and commerce, industry and invention.
04:04And we are determined to face the future together.
