Former FBI Director James Comey is facing serious federal charges after a viral Instagram post sparked controversy and legal action. The image, showing seashells arranged as “86 47,” has been interpreted by prosecutors as a coded threat against U.S. President Donald Trump.

Authorities argue that “86” is slang for “eliminate,” while “47” refers to Trump’s presidency, turning the post into what they claim is a direct threat. FBI leadership insists Comey, given his past role, understood the potential implications.

Comey has strongly denied all allegations, stating he had no knowledge of the symbolism and no intent to threaten. He has called the case politically motivated and reaffirmed his faith in the judicial system.

The controversy has triggered a sharp divide, with Trump allies calling the post dangerous, while legal experts question whether the charges can stand, citing free speech protections under U.S. law. If convicted, Comey could face up to 10 years in prison, making this one of the most high-profile legal battles involving a former intelligence chief.

00:19Former FBI Director James Comey was charged with threatening the life of President Donald Trump over a social media post.
00:27My family and I have known for years that there are costs to standing up to Donald Trump, but we
00:34couldn't imagine ourselves living any other way. We will not live on our knees, and you shouldn't either.
00:41The charges stem from an Instagram image Comey shared last year, showing seashells arranged to form the numbers 8647. That
00:51image is now at the center of a serious legal battle.
00:54According to prosecutors, the number 86 is commonly used as slang to mean remove or eliminate.
01:02Combined with 47, referring to Trump as the 47th president, officials argue the message amounted to a threat.
01:10FBI Director Kash Patel said Comey as a former head of the agency understood the consequences of sharing such content
01:19publicly.
01:20He accused Comey of encouraging a threat against the president and broadcasting it to the world.
01:26He allegedly threatened the life of the president of the United States.
01:30And as you all now know, shortly after posting that threat, he deleted that threat and then issued an apology.
01:38All of that information was presented to the grand jury and Mr. Comey will have his day in court and
01:44his ability to speak to a jury of his peers. Thank you.
01:48But Comey has strongly denied the allegation. He says he did not know what the numbers implied and insists there
01:55was no intent to threaten anyone.
01:57In a statement after the indictment, Comey said he remains innocent, is not afraid, and still believes in the independence
02:05of the federal judiciary.
02:06He also revealed that the image was taken on a beach in North Carolina and that he initially assumed it
02:13was just a political message.
02:15Well, they're back. This time about a picture of seashells on a North Carolina beach a year ago.
02:22And this won't be the end of it. But nothing has changed with me. I'm still innocent. I'm still not
02:29afraid.
02:30And I still believe in the independent federal judiciary. So let's go.
02:35But it's really important that all of us remember this is not who we are as a country.
02:41This is not how the Department of Justice is supposed to be.
02:44And the good news is we get closer every day to restoring those values. Keep the faith.
02:51Once concerns are raised, he deleted the post, saying he opposes violence of any kind.
02:57President Trump, however, dismissed that explanation. He said even a child would understand what the numbers meant, reinforcing his longstanding
03:07criticism of Comey.
03:08The case has also sparked debate among legal experts. Some argue the charges appear weak and may not hold up
03:15in court.
03:16They point out that for a conviction, prosecutors must prove clear intent to threaten, which may be difficult based on
03:24a social media post.
03:25Others say the post could fall under free speech protections guaranteed by the First Amendment.
03:31This is not the first legal clash involving Comey.
03:34Earlier charges accusing him of lying to Congress were dismissed due to procedural issues, though the court allowed prosecutors to
03:42try again.
03:43Now, with new charges filed in North Carolina, the legal and political battle is back in focus.
03:49At stake is not just Comey's future, but a broader question about intent, free speech, and the limits of online
03:57expression in a deeply divided political climate.
