00:00Hello Dr. Dilip Gude here, Physician, Yashoda Hospital, Somajiguda, Hyderabad.
00:04Let us discuss one really pressing problem, that is diabetes, incidence of diabetes in India.
00:10The numbers are more in southern states and across all the southern states,
00:15Tamil Nadu seems to have a higher incidence of new onset diabetes, type 2 diabetes that is.
00:20And there are so many reasons for it, it is not just genes alone, because it is multifactorial.
00:25It is not just genes, it is basically when patients or people in general, when they don't work out enough,
00:33there is a huge sedentary lifestyle people subset, especially in the urban population,
00:39with high calorie food intake, trans-fat rich food intake, then habits like smoking, alcohol, then lack of sleep.
00:48Then, because all these are going to compound the stress levels and prepone the onset of diabetes by 10 to
00:5515 years.
00:56So, someone who is destined to develop diabetes at the age of 45 or 50, can actually develop at 30,
01:02just because they are on the overweight side, obese, because more and more fat content,
01:07total body fat content, if it is more, can definitely tilt one towards developing diabetes at a much earlier age.
01:14So, it is really important that governmental bodies, both state and central, wake up to this pressing problem,
01:21because higher the incidence of diabetes, the higher the risk of heart disease, peripheral vascular disease,
01:27ischemic stroke, and so many other problems, like even retinopathy, blindness, neuropathy, nephropathy, kidney diseases as well.
01:34So, it is really important to understand the spectrum of diabetes, non-diabetics on one end,
01:40pre-diabetes in the middle, and then full-blown diabetes in the other extreme.
01:44So, if one can do one annual health check, at least from the age of 35 or so,
01:48we will understand if they are on the pre-diabetic or diabetes range,
01:51and we can actually help 70% of people go into diabetes remission, just by good lifestyle changes,
01:58and in some, maybe a few medications, like GLP-1 or SGLP-2 meters.
02:04But, it is really important to understand the emphasis of diet and exercise.
02:09The Mediterranean diet, where food is usually unprocessed,
02:14and then eating lots of veggies, fruits, all these,
02:18and then decreasing the stress, and make sure one exercises,
02:22then gets adequate sleep, avoids smoking and alcohol,
02:27all these can definitely help one steer towards non-diabetes,
02:30rather than going towards full-blown diabetes.
