Humanoid robots equipped with artificial intelligence are front and center at the Hanover fair, Germany's most important industrial trade show.
Transcript
00:00This is one of the stars of the Hannover Trade Fair.
00:04Robots that don't just look like people, but that, thanks to a large array of sensors, can see, hear, touch
00:09and even detect touch.
00:12Robots like these are a large departure from the machines and robotic arms that have defined Germany's most industrial fair.
00:19These are powered by artificial intelligence, capable of activities for which they haven't been programmed.
00:29It can work safely with people side by side.
00:32It can react organically to things that aren't planned, people who approach it, and also to mobile platforms.
00:38It's the sensors that give it spatial awareness.
00:44Humanoid robots are also an example of the competitive pressures facing German industry.
00:49Hannover has always been an emblem of the technological advancements of German industry.
00:53Today, rival products from Asia, and in particular China, are often cheaper, more rapidly developed, and sometimes better in quality.
01:01In part, perhaps, because German firms struggle with their own traditionally higher rules and standards.
01:07I think if you talk about precision and best quality, you see around the world application fields where customers don't
01:15need that, but they need a good enough machine.
01:18And these are, of course, some other suppliers from China who go into that gap for the good enough machine,
01:24and we have to learn to come from the excellent one also to good enough machines.
01:29Energy efficiency and critical resources are also key topics for German industry.
01:34Both are defining themes of this year's trade show.
01:37Germany will hope that energy-rich trade partners like Brazil, this year's partner country for the Hannover trade show, can
01:43help local industry pull out of its struggles from recent years.
01:50That means more trade, more investment, new jobs, and more business opportunities on both sides of the Atlantic.
01:56Brazil can help the European Union lower its energy costs, and it can help decarbonize industry.
02:04There are around 3,000 exhibitors from almost 60 countries at this year's show in Hannover.
02:10All are trying to figure out which direction the wind is blowing for Europe's industry.
