05:35european military forces and i think this is extremely necessary discussion and we should
05:41also discuss more about the european nuclear deterrence this is a discussion that i see
05:48happening already and the necessity to have it when i hear about the nuclear capabilities and
05:53deterrence and sort of extending this umbrella across europe what that says to me is the europeans
05:58they are preparing for a plan b in which if there is an attack you're not going to call the
06:03u.s
06:04you're going to figure out how you defend yourself and how the europeans defend themselves together
06:09is that what it is is this realization that a plan b is now needed i would be prepared from
06:15different
06:15scenarios this is the way that the finnish mentality works because we have such a difficult history with
06:21russia we don't wish uh those things that are happening in the world now but they are facts
06:27they are happening and we need to be prepared also for the harsher times and also when it comes to
06:32the relationship between u.s and europe we cannot only walk the path that we wish to be we have
06:37to
06:37walk the path that might be and that's why we need to be prepared and that's why we are having
06:42the
06:42discussion of the european alternatives and i think it is an important discussion but at the same time
06:47we want u.s to be a strong part of nato we want u.s presence in europe we want
06:52u.s nuclear deterrence
06:55to be there also in the future so i don't see these ruling themselves uh or each other out but
07:01we need
07:02to prepare for every scenario so you see a nature that is still standing together collectively around
07:07article 5 in the next 5 to 10 years to come that is still the scenario that you see that
07:12is a scenario
07:12that i hope but i would also prepare every scenario out there and of course you were in office and
07:18you
07:18say we as finnish we have to be prepared for every scenario have you ever thought what that could look
07:23like to have a contingency plan for modern warfare which not necessarily means an attack on the
07:29border i think it is extremely important to understand all across europe uh that the warfare
07:35and the threats are not anymore only uh connected to geography uh with drone technology with the use of
07:43ai critical mapping out critical infrastructure extremely fast with space technologies with all the
07:49things that is now created and will be created you cannot anymore rely that you're safe when you're
07:54farther away from the border so of course you are more in jeopardy we have that long border with
07:59russia and we understand what kind of enemy we are dealing with what kind of neighbor we are
08:04dealing with you think of russia as an enemy well russia is attacking european country yes russia is
08:09an enemy as we speak they're attacking uh european country they are uh violating international law
08:16they are an enemy and i think we need to make sure that they won't win uh war in ukraine
08:21but ukraine
08:22will win and maintain as independent country but what i was saying that we know it we know the pressure
08:29because we are near to russia but you need to also understand in portugal in spain in french that you
08:36are
08:36not safe even though you are further away from the border because of the new threats and because of the
08:41new technologies you can plant drones any anywhere you can map out critical infrastructure with ai
08:47with the speed that you don't even understand you can use these technologies also to attack other
08:53countries so you also need to be prepared elsewhere and not to all yourself into the idea that
08:58we are safe and we don't have to do anything you said it at the beginning of our interview uh
09:02you
09:02are very pro europe you are very liberal you've said i am a feminist but you also know the international
09:08side guys the pendulum has really changed from progressive ideas to what is seen now as a
09:14global conservative uh movement that would argue perhaps you are too woke so how would you respond
09:20to that and do you see that pendulum switching back there's always a pendulum movement um the most
09:26thing that i now worry is the lack of respect of international rules and laws um the fact that the
09:34rules-based international order is under questioning uh even threatened uh and that we don't want to
09:41build any more world uh where we work together um in a civilized way but we are going the direction
09:48again where pure uh violence or strength uh dictates the outcomes and from a small country perspective
09:56like finland that kind of future is extremely frightening because we cannot ever have that kind of strength and
10:03power that the big players have so i worry a lot this pendulum movement that is going the direction
10:09of demolishing the international structures that we built together after second world war saying
10:15never again and now we are in this situation the goal is to demolish international rules uh well as we
10:22see uh there's cultural battle there is this ideology uh again rising that made the strongest men win
10:29uh and we need to and we need to we need to push back and we need to remind that
10:36there was a reason
10:37why we built those structures before and if we go to that direction we will only end up in a
10:42similar
10:42kind of situations where we ended up for world war one world war two it wasn't a coincidence that these
10:49structures were uh invented created built as a final question you uh were in office you were a politician but
10:58you also became a sort of uh media sensation there was a fixation with the things that you would do
11:04the
11:04things you would wear uh your looks whether you were out and about and who you were with uh was
11:10that
11:10something that had an impact on you and how are you feeling now well i think those are things that
11:16come
11:16with the job of course i would have wished that media focus would always be on the issues on my
11:23job on the
11:24things that i was handling but of course i think every politician nowadays feel more and more pressure
11:29also from the intensive um not maybe with everybody a scrutiny but but the interests of personal issues
11:38personal things luke's appearance and i think this is frustrating especially to politicians because they
11:44usually want to focus on the work and the issues why they joined their parties and run for office in
