The federal government has announced sweeping reforms to the NDIS, cutting billions in projected spending and tightening eligibility rules amid a crackdown on fraud and misuse.

00:00The federal government has unveiled sweeping changes to the National Disability Insurance Scheme,
00:05slashing billions from projected spending as it moves to stamp out fraud and rein in rapid growth.
00:11Health Minister Mark Butler said the reforms would reduce expected costs from about $70 billion to $55 billion by 2030,
00:19describing the shake-up as necessary to stop the scheme becoming a target for frauders and exploitation.
00:25Right now the NDIS costs too much and it's growing too fast, put alongside any comparable government program.
00:33And unless we take action to make it sustainable, it simply will not be there in the future for the
00:39Australians who need it most.
00:41Under the changes, average funding per participant will be reduced, third-party plan managers scaled back,
00:47and providers more tightly vetted to weed out scams or those looking to take advantage of the scheme.
00:53Eligibility rules will also be overhauled, with standardised assessments introduced,
00:57as the government attempts to bring the scheme back to sustainable footing,
01:01while maintaining support for those who need it most.
