A new military pact between India and Russia is fueling debate over its potential implications. The Reciprocal Exchange of Logistics Agreement (RELOS), signed in 2025 and now operational, allows both nations to station up to 3,000 troops in each other’s territory. It also permits deployment of five warships and ten military aircraft at a time. While framed as a logistics and cooperation pact, questions are emerging over how it could be used in future conflicts and what it signals about deepening India–Russia defense ties.

00:22A new military pact between India and Russia is raising serious questions
00:26and sparking intense debate.
00:29Could Indian troops end up operating alongside Russian forces,
00:33even in active conflict zones like Ukraine?
00:36A recently operationalized agreement between India and Russia
00:40now allows both nations to station up to 3,000 troops in each other's territory.
00:47Alongside that, five warships and ten military aircraft
00:51can also be deployed simultaneously.
00:53The deal, known as the Reciprocal Exchange of Logistics Agreement, or RELOS,
00:59was signed in February 2025 and has been in force since January this year.
01:04It was formally ratified by Moscow in December.
01:09Russian lawmaker Vyacheslav Nikonov confirmed the scope of the agreement,
01:14highlighting its five-year duration, with the option to extend for another five.
01:19At its core, the pact is about logistics.
01:21It allows both countries to use each other's military bases
01:25for refueling, repairs and operational support.
01:29For warships, that means access to ports, supplies and maintenance.
01:33For aircraft, it includes air traffic control, navigation systems, fuel and security.
01:40And for troops, it enables longer deployments, joint exercises and coordinated missions.
01:46But the implications go far beyond logistics.
01:49The agreement opens the door to deeper military integration.
01:53India now has potential access to Russian bases, including in the Arctic.
01:58Russia, in turn, gains expanded access to Indian military facilities.
02:03But the timing is critical.
02:04The pact comes amid ongoing global tensions, from the Ukraine war to instability in West Asia.
02:11And that's where the questions begin.
02:14The agreement allows for the deployment of military formations.
02:18While officially framed around training, humanitarian missions and joint exercises,
02:23some observers worry about broader interpretations.
02:26Could this framework, in theory, enable Indian personnel to be present in regions where Russia is actively engaged?
02:34There is no official indication that India plans to send troops into Ukraine.
02:38But speculation is growing, especially online.
02:41Some voices have speculated that India could be drawn into Russia's conflicts in exchange for strategic benefits,
02:48like discounted energy supplies.
02:51And Indian policy has traditionally emphasized strategic autonomy, avoiding direct involvement in foreign wars.
