Stella and Gerry are “doing something for their marriage” on a long weekend in Amsterdam. That’s the pitch. Four days to explore the city, pretend retirement is fun, and tolerate each other’s little quirks like it’s a loving hobby. The problem is the movie keeps showing you the cracks. Not the cute, sentimental kind. The deep ones. The kind you only notice when the honeymoon phase is long gone.

Stella clearly has a plan. Not a vague, “let’s see what happens” plan. More like a route mapped by a promise she once made, leading to one of Amsterdam’s prettiest spots: the Beginenhof. Meanwhile Gerry, a former architect, has largely checked out, and alcohol has been moving in rent-free.

And then something from their shared past in Belfast, Northern Ireland, starts pushing up through the surface. By the end, the trip isn’t about sightseeing. It’s about what they’ve been avoiding for years.

Stella und Gerry wollen im Ruhestand einfach mal raus. Also ab nach Amsterdam, vier Tage lang Stadtbummel, Ehe-Feuerchen und dieses romantische Gefühl, wenn man seine gemeinsamen Fehler freundlich wegatmet. Klingt nach Erholung. Ist es aber nicht. Schon am Anfang merkt man: Ihre Beziehung hat mehr Risse als die Straßen in Glasgow nach dem Winter. Stella wirkt dabei auffällig fokussiert, als hätte sie nicht nur Sehenswürdigkeiten im Kopf, sondern einen eigenen Plan. Der führt sie zum Beginenhof. Und zu einem Gelübde, das sie einst getan hat.

Gerry dagegen ist längst in seinem eigenen Modus, in dem Alkohol leider schnell die Hauptrolle übernimmt. Und während Amsterdam hübsch bleibt, wird es in Belfast aus ihrer gemeinsamen Vergangenheit plötzlich ziemlich laut. Dieses Wochenende entpuppt sich als Abrechnung im Mantel der Neugier.
