There’s a lonely old tree sitting in the middle of a botanical garden, and it might be the most patient character in the whole movie. While people bustle around with their human problems, the film keeps zooming in on something simpler. Growth. Waiting. Change. “Silent Friend” tells you, without any big speeches, that the distance between plants and people is not really the point. It’s about longing, about trying to belong, and about the quiet ways connection happens. Not exactly a blockbuster plot. More like an observation that slowly turns into a feeling. Ildikó Enyedi wrote and directed this one, and it comes with that calm, slightly wistful intelligence that makes you pay attention. Luna Wedler’s performance earned her an award in Venice for best young discovery.

Ein alter Baum im Botanischen Garten, der einfach nicht mehr mitspielt. Während um ihn herum Menschen geschniegelt und zugenäht reden, beobachtet er lieber, was wächst, was verdorrt und was sich trotzdem irgendwie zueinander findet. „Silent Friend“ macht daraus keine große Mystik-Show, sondern etwas viel Langsameres: Geduldige Nähe. Die Einsamkeit des Baums wird zum Spiegel. Plötzlich geht es nicht mehr nur um Pflanzen und Menschen als zwei getrennte Welten, sondern um das gleiche Grundbedürfnis nach Verbindung. Und ja, das klingt sehr nach Poesie mit leichter Sehnsuchts-Überdosis. Aber es funktioniert, weil es nicht nach Effekt schreit. Luna Wedler macht dabei einen Eindruck, der in Venedig sogar ausgezeichnet wurde.
