„Is This Thing On?“ feels sharp and lived-in, with a dry edge that makes the whole thing land. It’s not a comedy about healing. It’s a comedy about what’s left when you stop pretending.

Alex und Tess versuchen, ihre Ehe leise sterben zu lassen. So richtig laut knallt da nichts. Eher diese schleichende Erkenntnis, dass beide am selben Tisch sitzen, aber an komplett unterschiedlichen Filmen arbeiten. Alex sucht in der New Yorker Comedy-Szene Ablenkung und Neubeginn. Fun fact: Comedy ist da wahrscheinlich das Einzige, das noch funktioniert, wenn das Privatleben streikt.

Tess dagegen rechnet gnadenlos nach. Welche Opfer sie für ihre Familie gebracht hat, was davon angekommen ist und was sie dabei verloren hat. Und dann wird es praktisch: gemeinsames Sorgerecht, gemeinsame Identität, die Frage, ob Liebe nach dem Bruch überhaupt noch eine neue Form finden kann. „Is This Thing On?“ ist clever, bissig und dabei erstaunlich menschlich. (Und ja, der Film nimmt das Leben genauso ernst wie seine Gags.)
