00:01:06Who of us will ever know what is in the heart of a dog?
00:01:12This is the story of a great love.
00:01:15The love of a dog for one man.
00:01:19A love that was to prove even stronger than life itself.
00:01:32The love of a dog for one man.
00:02:06Where are you, Dad?
00:02:10Hurry up!
00:02:12Get me out of there, Jess.
00:02:16Hey, hey, never mind eating me.
00:02:18Just get me out of here.
00:02:19Start digging.
00:02:21Go on.
00:02:23That's it.
00:02:24Start digging.
00:02:25Atta, girl.
00:02:27Keep up flying.
00:02:28Hey!
00:02:29Hey!
00:02:30The other way!
00:02:31The other way!
00:02:32The other way, Jess.
00:02:34No.
00:02:35No.
00:02:36No dig.
00:02:37Dig.
00:02:38Dig.
00:02:39Keep digging.
00:02:40That's million-dollar dirt.
00:02:42We've hit it this time, Shep.
00:02:43We've hit it sure.
00:02:45No.
00:02:46Keep going.
00:02:47I forgot to tear the shaft up.
00:02:49Come down near being the richest corpse in the territory.
00:02:54Come on, girl.
00:02:56We're heading for town.
00:02:58Just wait till you see Frank Blake's eyes
00:03:00when we tell him he's a millionaire.
00:03:22Merry Christmas!
00:03:27Oh, Steve.
00:03:30Well, Jonathan, how are you?
00:03:32Merry Christmas.
00:03:34How about it on the house?
00:03:35No.
00:03:36How about you, pup?
00:03:38Pup!
00:03:41Can't call you a pup anymore, can that fella?
00:03:43Can't call her a fella, neither.
00:03:45Say, that's right. Excuse me, beautiful.
00:03:48Well, how's it going, Jonathan?
00:03:50Shippin' me ain't complainin'.
00:03:52Uh, Steve, has Frank been around tonight?
00:03:55Frank? Frank Blake?
00:03:59Be right back.
00:04:02Thanks, Steve.
00:04:04Hear me out.
00:04:09Jonathan Harvey?
00:04:12That's right.
00:04:13I'm Lynn Taylor.
00:04:15Sorry we couldn't let you know, Jonathan.
00:04:17Martha wanted to, but there was no way of finding you in time.
00:04:21Time for what?
00:04:22Frank's dead, Jonathan. Over a month ago, pneumonia.
00:04:32Tommy worries me, Jonathan.
00:04:34Do you know that he's never once cried?
00:04:38If he could just let it out.
00:04:40We'll work it out, Martha.
00:04:42We'll find a way.
00:04:44But right now, what about this fella, Taylor?
00:04:48Lynn's a fine man. He's been wonderful.
00:04:50Why did Frank take him in as a partner?
00:04:52He had to.
00:04:54Lynn's buying in when he did kept us from losing everything.
00:04:58I see.
00:05:00Does that make him a partner of grebstake rights?
00:05:03Yes. Why?
00:05:05Jonathan, you've made a strike.
00:05:08I got something to show you.
00:05:17Lynn.
00:05:18Hello, Martha.
00:05:19Come in. Jonathan's inside.
00:05:22I'm so glad you're here. Jonathan has something to show us.
00:05:27Here.
00:05:29Look at this.
00:05:31I found a vein of that.
00:05:33If it's deep enough, it could be the biggest strike this territory has ever seen.
00:05:36That's why we've got to file a claim and quick.
00:05:39File? Before it's proved?
00:05:41If you file now and word gets out that you struck oar like this,
00:05:44every claim jumper in the territory will be in those hills in a week
00:05:46before you're sure yourself that you've hit the main vein.
00:05:50By gad, you're right.
00:05:53Thirty years of mudscrabbling, and when I do find the glory dust, I go off half-cocked.
00:05:59Mr. Taylor, Martha's right about you.
00:06:03And right now you can start working at being a partner by lining me up some supplies.
00:06:07Of course, Jonathan. Anything you need.
00:06:09Meet you in the store in a half-hour.
00:06:11All right. Good night, Martha.
00:06:13Good night, Lynn.
00:06:15If it's all right with you, Martha, I'd like to talk a mite with Tommy.
00:06:20All right, Jonathan. If there's anything you can do.
00:06:39Tommy?
00:06:46Tommy?
00:06:48Hey, Jonathan.
00:06:51Jonathan.
00:06:54Oh, Jonathan.
00:06:56Why'd he have to die?
00:06:58Easy, boy.
00:07:00I want my father, Jonathan.
00:07:02I want Pa.
00:07:03Sure you do.
00:07:05But there's some things we can't answer, Tommy.
00:07:09The Lord's got His way of doing things we just can't answer.
00:07:19I didn't want to cry.
00:07:21You go ahead and cry.
00:07:23I used to do it myself sometimes.
00:07:26Before my tears all dried up on me.
00:07:29Now, how about Shep here?
00:07:31Those hills up there.
00:07:33That's no place for a dog.
00:07:35At least why it's not Shep.
00:07:37It isn't.
00:07:38No, not too lonesome.
00:07:41She likes folks around.
00:07:43The fact is, she just plain ain't happy up there.
00:07:49And as for me, I'm better off alone.
00:07:54Lots of times, the dog is nothing but a darn bother to me.
00:07:58A bother to you?
00:08:01Shep?
00:08:02Now, what the hell, Jew, Shep?
00:08:03Now, go on.
00:08:04Go on.
00:08:05Now, you get away.
00:08:07Now, go on.
00:08:08Get away.
00:08:10Now, what I'm sandwashing up to with all this is, how about taking her off my hands?
00:08:17Will you do it, Tom?
00:08:18Will you?
00:08:19You're no liar, Jonathan.
00:08:21I can't take Shep from you.
00:08:24She's your dog.
00:08:25Nobody else's till she dies.
00:08:28Thanks anyway.
00:08:29And look, don't tell anybody I bawled.
00:08:32Will you please?
00:08:35Honest to Christmas.
00:08:41We didn't do so good.
00:08:45All right, it's Christmas.
00:08:47And giving is part of Christmas.
00:08:51Anyway, you are a bother to me.
00:08:55I'll be quiet.
00:08:57And don't look at me that way.
00:09:20Hey, Ma, wake up.
00:09:22It's Christmas.
00:09:31Oh, gee, that Jonathan.
00:09:34Merry Christmas, Tommy.
00:09:36Merry Christmas, Ma.
00:09:37Look.
00:09:38Yes, dear, I know.
00:09:42Dear Tommy, I put it up to Shep.
00:09:45She agreed with me.
00:09:46She's yours.
00:09:48Merry Christmas from Jonathan.
00:09:50Where is Jonathan?
00:09:53He's gone, son.
00:09:54Gone?
00:09:57Is it all right, Ma?
00:09:58Can I really keep her?
00:10:00That's what he wanted, Tommy.
00:10:02I'm sure it's all right.
00:10:23I'm sure it's all right.
00:10:26She's gone.
00:10:39Shaft?
00:10:40Oh, Shaft?
00:10:47Sheep.
00:10:50What's the matter with you, Sheep?
00:10:53Ma! Ma, something's wrong with Sheep.
00:10:58What's wrong with her, Mr. Bald Eagle? What's wrong?
00:11:07He said dog, Sheep, not eat because she's not eating.
00:11:11Why would you want to go home?
00:11:13To Jonathan?
00:11:23He say dogs starve till die, if not go Jonathan.
00:11:28Thanks, Mr. Bald Eagle.
00:11:31Thanks.
00:11:32Ma si.
00:11:33Goodbye, Red Wayne.
00:11:36Ma, we've got to get her to Jonathan.
00:11:39Please, Sam, take her. Please, Ma.
00:11:41Well, I don't know, dear.
00:11:45How could you ever find him?
00:11:46Sheep could. She knows where the claim is.
00:11:50But you still couldn't go alone.
00:11:52I'll take you, Martha. Be glad to.
00:11:55Gee, thanks, Mr. Taylor.
00:11:59You hear that, Sheep?
00:12:00We're gonna take you back to Jonathan.
00:12:02Now you've got to eat and get strong for the trip.
00:12:06Here, take some.
00:12:09Here, take some.
00:12:09You've got to.
00:12:17Thanks, lad.
00:12:21Ma, look. She's eating. She's gonna be all right.
00:12:39Sheep, what is it? Jonathan?
00:12:43Jonathan?
00:12:45Jonathan?
00:12:45Here, Tommy.
00:12:47Jonathan, what's wrong?
00:12:49Taylor.
00:12:51Hit me a week ago.
00:12:52Oh, the worst has passed.
00:12:57So weak, I couldn't get food any longer.
00:13:00That's what was wrong with Shep.
00:13:02She knew.
00:13:04She wouldn't eat.
00:13:05She made us bring her here.
00:13:07Ma's right, Jonathan.
00:13:09Shep's your dog, and nobody else's.
00:13:12So I'm giving her back to you, right now.
00:13:15Never mind the dog, Tommy.
00:13:17Tommy, you rustle up some wood.
00:13:18I'll see about the food.
00:13:26I'm all right, girl.
00:13:28And thanks.
00:13:31Taylor, guess you'll wonder how our partnership's been going.
00:13:35You were right.
00:13:37I'd have been a fool to file that claim.
00:13:39Vane peed it out in a week.
00:13:43So I just kept working upstream.
00:13:45Surfaced up.
00:13:47Hardly worth a man's time.
00:13:49I'll show you.
00:13:51Tommy?
00:13:52Go on over there by the shell.
00:13:55Now slide that chest out.
00:13:58The board underneath will lift up.
00:14:04Take them out.
00:14:15Look inside, Tommy.
00:14:22How much is here, Jonathan?
00:14:24Oh, not much.
00:14:26Only around about $6,000.
00:14:28$6,000?
00:14:30And plenty more to come.
00:14:32$6,000.
00:14:34You say that's just from gravel?
00:14:36You still haven't found the main vein?
00:14:37No, but it's up there.
00:14:39I aim to just work upstream until I find it.
00:14:42And I will.
00:14:44As sure as your name's Lynn Taylor.
00:14:47Jonathan, do you realize what this means?
00:14:49It means we're rich.
00:14:50All of us.
00:14:51Sure we are, but that's not what I'm talking about.
00:14:53You need help.
00:14:54Now look, I'm starting back to town tomorrow.
00:14:57I'll take this gold and deposit it in all our names.
00:14:59It'll be safe there.
00:15:00And I'll be back.
00:15:02Why, with proper equipment,
00:15:03we can take that gold out 10 times as fast.
00:15:09All my life, I've waited for something like this.
00:15:12And I'm not taking any chance on losing it now.
00:15:29We'll run the inlet channel across there
00:15:32and build the sluice box below the rapid.
00:15:40Let her go, Tommy.
00:15:48When you see one day's take from this baby, Taylor,
00:15:52just wait.
00:16:30What do you see?
00:16:56How can you lie there?
00:16:58I tell you, I tell you, I heard somebody.
00:16:59Somebody's out there.
00:17:00Sure, the same fellas you've been here in for three days.
00:17:04You said to yourself there are other prospectors over in Oak Valley.
00:17:07What if they've got word somehow that we've hit it?
00:17:08Sure.
00:17:10A little bird flew down and told them.
00:17:12So they came running right back here so they could dig up all our pretty gold.
00:17:16Right in the driving rain.
00:17:18You may think it's funny, but I don't.
00:17:20And from now on, we're keeping a guard here at the cabin while we're up at the mine.
00:17:24We've got to.
00:17:26All right, Taylor.
00:17:27Then you stand guard.
00:17:29Tommy and me will work the mine.
00:17:32Well, maybe that would worry you, too.
00:17:34You'd be wondering if we were losing some of it before we got here.
00:17:40Now, ease up, dearly.
00:17:42Stop worrying.
00:17:43The richest dust in creation is no blame good if you kill yourself getting it.
00:17:48Now, go on.
00:17:49Get some sleep.
00:17:52I'm going to.
00:18:20I'm going to get you.
00:18:22Go get what you put in that saddlebag.
00:18:25The days you've been watching us.
00:18:27But you didn't fool me.
00:18:29I knew you were out there.
00:18:31You hurt what I said. Move!
00:18:35Go on. Go get what you put in there.
00:18:38Taylor, what's going on here?
00:18:40You keep out of this, Jonathan. I know what I'm doing.
00:18:43Whether you get it or don't you.
00:18:46You crazy fool. I ought to lay you low.
00:18:48Make him sure you ain't put in that saddlebag.
00:18:50I took something from there, for this house.
00:18:52He's lying. Look for yourself.
00:18:55No, Taylor. You look.
00:19:13But he was inside, searching around, snooping.
00:19:15For food.
00:19:18I would have prepared a table in the presence of my friends.
00:19:25This is Pilot Pete, Taylor.
00:19:27If you'd been longer in these hills, you'd never have made that mistake.
00:19:31Don't make it again.
00:19:34Come on, Pete. Let's see about that something.
00:19:39You a regular person, Mr. Pete?
00:19:41Regular? No, son. Reckon I'm as irregular as it come.
00:19:45Gotta have roots to be a regular person.
00:19:48Me, I ain't got the roots of a tumbleweed.
00:19:52Two things I love above all else.
00:19:55The Lord's mountains and the Lord's centers.
00:19:58So, I spend my time in one, looking for the other.
00:20:02And I sure find him.
00:20:08Here, lady.
00:20:10You better leave Shep alone. She never makes up to strangers.
00:20:14She don't?
00:20:16Here. Here, lady. Here, lady.
00:20:20Well, you got her wrong, brother Taylor.
00:20:23Thou sawest the beast that was and is not.
00:20:26Revelation 17, 8.
00:20:28Well, there's plenty of love in this dog for them that loves her.
00:20:31Ain't the Shep?
00:20:33Well, maybe she just likes my stool.
00:20:38There's plenty of love.
00:20:40This is from all of us.
00:20:43Well, in his name, I thank you.
00:20:45Jonathan. Tommy.
00:20:48Mr. Taylor.
00:20:50And you too, lady bear.
00:20:53The Lord be with you in all your labors.
00:20:57Lay not up for yourselves treasures on earth,
00:21:00but lay up for yourselves treasures in heaven.
00:21:05Matthew 6, 19.
00:21:12Get up, Gabriel.
00:21:14Goodbye, Mr. Pete.
00:21:16Goodbye, Pete.
00:21:17Goodbye.
00:21:18Work for the night is coming.
00:21:23Work through the morning hours.
00:21:27Work while the dew is far clean.
00:21:32Tommy, you go down to work.
00:21:33I'll be alone.
00:21:40Well, you gave him dust.
00:21:43That's a dead giveaway we struck pay dirt.
00:21:45The old fool talks.
00:21:46He won't.
00:21:47Pete knows the law of these hills, Taylor.
00:21:49And he lives by it.
00:21:51You could try doing the same.
00:21:54And until you do, I'm taking that gun.
00:21:57I keep my own gun.
00:21:59You're edgy, Taylor.
00:22:00Getting worse every time more gold goes under that floor.
00:22:04And ain't just being scared someone will steal it, neither.
00:22:07It's having to split it with Martha and me.
00:22:09You're crazy.
00:22:10Only a quarter you keep thinking to yourself.
00:22:13I only get a quarter of it.
00:22:15And Jonathan gets half.
00:22:18That keeps eating at you, Taylor.
00:22:20I've been watching you and I know.
00:22:23That's why I'm taking that gun.
00:22:27No, you won't do that.
00:22:29There's two reasons why you won't shoot me, Taylor.
00:22:32The first, you won't find that pain without me.
00:22:35And the other, the other is just a hunch that you haven't got the guts.
00:22:41You won't do it.
00:22:50Then, what do you do?
00:22:50On your face.
00:22:55You won't do what you need.
00:22:55Let's your face.
00:22:55Don't.
00:22:58You won't.
00:23:02We'll see you.
00:23:02Don't do what you want.
00:23:10Do you want to take me.
00:23:11You're going to take your face to step to step in.
00:23:15Amen.
00:23:51Amen.
00:24:14Good girl.
00:24:57Good girl.
00:25:16Good girl.
00:26:04Good girl.
00:26:06All our names, hers, Taylor's, and mine.
00:26:08Is there anything wrong, Jonathan?
00:26:10Oh, this is just in case someone gets the bright idea of filing only in their own name.
00:26:15Oh, Mr. Taylor.
00:26:17Well, remember, whatever happens, not a word to anyone about my daughter.
00:26:21Even your ma.
00:26:22Promise?
00:26:24Now, come on.
00:26:25Bye, Taylor.
00:26:26Hurry up.
00:26:32Tell your ma not to worry.
00:26:33I will.
00:26:34Bye, Jonathan.
00:26:39Come on.
00:26:40Shep, where are you?
00:26:43Shep, what is this?
00:26:45What ails you?
00:26:47You know, between us, we got to take care of that boy.

00:27:16What's all the excitement?
00:27:18Jonathan, that thing we've been looking for.
00:27:19If it was up there, what would it look like?
00:27:21Well, uh...
00:27:22No, I'll tell you.
00:27:23The sheer face of the cliff.
00:27:25White quartz.

00:27:27And in it, jagged like lightning.
00:27:28A vein of pure gold.

00:47:35Where?
00:47:36I don't know. Over towards Blue Mountain somewhere.
00:47:39Thought he might pick us up a deer for meat through the winter.
00:47:42I heard his whistle.
00:47:44You couldn't have.
00:47:45Shep must have too. She was barking.
00:47:47When did you see Shep?
00:47:49Indian kids found her.
00:47:50She was almost dead.
00:47:53And poisoned.
00:47:54But she's all right now?
00:47:55Yeah, but I knew Jonathan would want to know,
00:47:58so I brought her back.
00:48:00Mr. Taylor, are you sure he's not here?
00:48:02I know I heard.

00:48:08Shep!
00:48:10Shep!

00:48:23They're tired and upset.
00:48:25Good night's sleep and you start home in the morning.

00:50:49You lied!
00:50:50He isn't always dead!
00:50:51You killed him!
00:50:52He's buried over there and you killed him!

00:51:38Where's Apache?
00:51:40You got it, Joe.
00:51:41You got it, boy.
00:51:44Tommy, come back here! Come back!
00:51:57You little fool out of...
00:52:13Oh!
00:52:18Oh!
00:52:20Mm-hm!
00:52:55Tommy, come on now. Drink it. You're all right now. Here. Drink, Tommy. Drink it. That's right. That's fine, boy.
00:53:17Get away from me. Leave me alone.
00:53:19Listen, son. You've got to listen to me. There's nothing to be afraid of. You're here. Perfectly safe. And I
00:53:26brought you here.
00:53:28Now listen. You've been scared, Tommy. I know that. And it's my fault.
00:53:35But that's because I was scared, too. So scared that I almost lost my head. A man can be scared,
00:53:43too, Tommy. Even if a kid like you. Especially if that kid gets the wrong idea in his head. And
00:53:50you've got the wrong idea, son.
00:53:52You lied. You said he was hunting.
00:53:58Yes. Yes, I lied. You know why? Because I knew you loved Jonathan, Tommy. Almost as much as your own
00:54:06father.
00:54:07So I... Well, I didn't know how to tell you just like that. Jonathan, his dad's son. He was working
00:54:17up in the canyon and he fell. It was an accident.
00:54:21Two days ago, I found his body and... Well, I... I buried it where you saw. I was coming in
00:54:28tomorrow to tell you, ma'am.
00:54:36Shep. Where's Shep?
00:54:38Why, Shep's all right. I saw her outside a while ago. Shep was like you, son.
00:54:44She got the wrong idea, too. So let's... Let's both of us forget about what happened tonight. Shall we?
00:54:54I... I guess so.
00:54:56Sure we will. Now you get some sleep and you'll be fine in the morning.
00:55:09Just sleep, son. And forget the whole thing.
00:55:19Oh, Jonathan!
00:55:23Hello!
00:55:28Hello!
00:55:35Tommy, wake up. We've got company, son.
00:55:38And don't forget what we talked about last night.
00:55:40About the accidents of Jonathan. Better let me do all of the explaining. All right?
00:55:44Hey, Jonathan!
00:55:49Hi, Mr. Taylor.
00:55:51Uh, Mel Steiner and Carl Crane.
00:55:54This runaway come into their camp over in Oak Flats last night.
00:55:58And I thought I remembered he was yours.
00:56:00They was breakin' camp in the middle of the night.
00:56:01Well, they had a camp for winter anyway. So on the way into town, figured we'd cut across the ridge
00:56:05and fetch him back.
00:56:07Why, hello there, Tommy boy!
00:56:09Hi, Mr. Pete.
00:56:10Gee, I'm sure glad to see you.
00:56:12We both are, Pete. Mighty glad. And thanks for bringin' the horse back.
00:56:15Sure! Where's Jonathan?
00:56:18It's a good thing you men came along. Come inside. I'm afraid I got some bad news for you.
00:56:25And in thy heavenly kingdom, Lord, let him find peace, that peace which passeth understanding.
00:56:35Let the gold he sought on earth be his in heaven, the pure and shining gold of thy holy grace.
00:56:45We ask it, Lord, in his name. Amen.
00:57:04Come along, Tommy.
00:57:13Come on, Sheriff.
00:57:15Thanks, Pete. Then I'll count on you to explain everything in town.
00:57:19That I will.
00:57:20As long as you can take Tommy and the dog back for me,
00:57:23I'll probably stay on up here till spring.
00:57:26For everyone's sake, I'd like to prove Jonathan was right.
00:57:28You see, he was sure there was real pay dirt here.
00:57:31So far, we've never found it.
00:57:33And Pete, do all you can to help Tommy, will you?
00:57:36You know, kids sometimes imagine all sorts of things,
00:57:39and Jonathan's accident hit the boy pretty hard.
00:57:41I'm sure you understand.
00:57:43I do indeed, Mr. Taylor.
00:57:45Pete, he's lying. Don't believe him. Please don't believe him.
00:57:48It wasn't an accident. Jonathan didn't fall. He killed him. I know he did.
00:57:52Pete, he's lying. He's lying about everything.
00:57:54Tommy.
00:57:55Boy, the boy's hysterical.
00:57:57He hated Jonathan and he killed him.
00:57:59And last night when I found out, he tried to kill me too.
00:58:01He's lying, Pete.
00:58:02Tommy, listen to me.
00:58:03You say I wanted to kill you?
00:58:05Where did you sleep last night?
00:58:07Who picked you up when you horse threw you and carried you to the cabin?
00:58:10Boy, Tommy, you slept six feet from me the whole night through, safe and well.
00:58:15Does that sound like I wanted to hurt you?
00:58:16Answer me.
00:58:17Pete, don't believe him. He did do it.
00:58:20Shep knows too. That's why I tried to poison her.
00:58:25You don't believe me.
00:58:28He said the claim didn't pay out, but it did.
00:58:32There's bags full of gold in the cabin. A dozen of them.
00:58:35If that's true, I guess you can show us, son.
00:58:38I will. Come on.
00:58:54There was more. A lot more.
00:58:58He's done something with the rest.
00:59:03You better take these back to Martha.
00:59:06I was holding this hoping that I'd have a bigger haul by spring.
00:59:10There is more now. A lot more.
00:59:13Mr. Crane, can't you see he's lying?
00:59:15Mr. Steiner, don't believe him.
00:59:18Please don't believe him.
00:59:19I guess we'd better be going.
00:59:22Please, Mr. Pete.
