DOST pushes electric jeepney conversion as fuel costs rise

The Department of Science and Technology (DOST) is pushing to convert traditional jeepneys to electric-powered jeepneys, noting that the shift would be both environmentally sustainable and cost-efficient for drivers. In an interview with _The Manila Times_ on April 17, 2026, DOST Secretary Renato Solidum Jr. said conversion to electric vehicles should be seen 'positively' but acknowledged that Filipinos’ cultural attachment to traditional jeepneys may pose a challenge.

00:00Okay, given the energy crisis and the long-term stress on our drivers, either tricycle drivers or jeepney drivers or
00:12even bus drivers, the need to really use electric vehicles is very, very important.
00:17And given the current crisis because of the conflict in the Middle East, we need to look at it very
00:24closely and very positively because the price of oil, diesel or gasoline is increasing.
00:32And then the chance to use free energy through solar energy or through cheaper energy out of electricity will be
00:41most beneficial to our drivers.
00:43And so the Department of Science and Technology have already vehicles or electric vehicles on tricycle.
00:53We have electric tricycle.
00:55We have converted some of the conventional tricycles to electric tricycles and many are really into it now.
01:03One is that aside from saving a lot of cost for the gasoline or diesel, they can actually have free
01:14charging if it's solar.
01:16We hope that the local government can put up a good charging infrastructure in their locality.
01:22So if it's solar, it can be free or they can pay a little bit of amount.
01:26Third, during evening, even though you pass by, people will not notice the noise pollution that is typically brought by
01:36the motor vehicle.
01:37And so one of the ideas that we are looking at, and perhaps with our inventors, would be how to
01:43convert the traditional fuel driven jeepney to electrical motor driven jeepney.
01:55The challenge though is that some of our jeepneys are very heavy because of the steel body.
02:02And so we hope that this can also be looked into on modifying it so that we can still have
02:10a substantial amount of material from the old one to be used so that our drivers can be assisted in
02:18their desire to really have cheaper operational costs.
