Here are our top tips for playing golf in cold weather!
Transcript
00:04so this is the first of five tips for playing in the winter and obviously what we find a lot
00:09you
00:09get in some wet fairways you get muddy lies and a great tip is really I think is to play
00:14them much
00:15like you would do a fairway bunker shot so for that in mind what I would tend to do is
00:19I'd narrow
00:20the starts down a little bit I'd actually the other thing I always encourage players to do is
00:24to aim towards the front of the ball so of course in the winter we've got pick and place so
00:29my ball
00:29is finished here so what I'd actually do here is I turn it round so I can actually see the
00:34line so
00:35obviously I'll use that for putting but in this instance I'm going to put it down like this so
00:40now when I actually address the ball I'm actually looking at the front half of the ball and this will
00:44ensure that I catch the ball first rather than the turf because as you know on a damp fairway if
00:49hit
00:49behind the ball you're just going to end up with no distance whatsoever so if I demonstrate narrow
00:55the stance down looking down the fairway I'm looking towards the front of the ball
01:04and I can see how the balls come off there really nicely it's got turf second and I've got a
01:10nice
01:10shallow contact I haven't dug down into it and that's really critical when you're playing off wet
01:15fairways so here's a really important tip in the winter ground conditions are going to get a little bit
01:20soggy we need to get more stability so what I work on is actually narrowing the stance down and of
01:26course that also has an effect of just bringing the spine a little bit steeper so it'll actually
01:29help lower your ball flight which is a good thing this time of year so you can see here I've
01:33set up
01:33from a normal three wood shot so my feet I put the balls down to measure where I normally would
01:38be
01:38so I'd stand to here I'll just give this one a hit so that would be my normal setup to
01:49there so now
01:50what I would practice is literally standing inside of these balls so I'd actually have my stance a
01:56little narrower here same idea and I can immediately feel I'm a lot more stable from that setup and that's
02:07something that we're all going to need this winter so my big bugbear about golf balls is I see a
02:12lot
02:12of golfers with all sorts of a jumble in their bag and really you want to find a ball that's
02:17best for
02:17you there's a lot of great ball fitting out there in the pro shops you can find out what is
02:21the best
02:21ball for you and once you do definitely fill your bag with it certainly in the winter my feeling is
02:27find
02:27something a little bit firmer and you'll find a little bit more distance off the tee and certainly when
02:32you get on the greens they're really damp that firmer ball will definitely roll out a bit easier
02:36so a major improvement I think in golf in the winter is the clothing you've got these companies
02:41now offering the base layer mid layer and outer layer and you can move so much easier than with
02:46the old equipment so jackets are now much lighter so this is the first time today it's actually stopped
02:51raining so I'm going to take this off and you can see here I've got this nice smart layer on
02:56underneath
02:56but they're really warm and of course the other great thing about these jackets is they're so light
03:01they don't add any weight to your bag so I've got the mid layer that keeps you really warm I
03:06can move
03:06a lot easier than I could with the old equipment and then I've got a base layer underneath and that
03:11really keeps me nice and warm but I'd say the movement is the big thing and I think you know
03:15if
03:15you haven't shopped for golf equipment for a few years get into your local pro shop and have a look
03:20around and get yourself something smart as the weather gets colder I always think it's a really good
03:24idea to actually carry a golf bag there's several reasons for that as you know the green keepers
03:28have to rope areas off so you can actually walk straight to your ball if you're walking and I
03:33also think you know with the colder weather you definitely work a little bit harder so it's better
03:37for you and it's better for the ground as well because less trolley is on the golf course the other
03:42thing you can consider I've got a full set here but then maybe play with a three quarters set or
03:47even
03:47what I'm really keen on which I've often run competitions is have a seven club challenge so you take
03:52two long two medium two short clubs and a putter and it's a really interesting way to find out the
03:57differences between your clubs and obviously at this time of year the difference between say a six
04:02and a seven iron starts to get quite little so I think that's quite an interesting addition to your
04:07golf game in any case so definitely if you're able to give it a try these bags are really light
04:13now
04:13they're fantastic really well balanced and I definitely am a big advocate for that in the winter
04:24so there's five simple tips that I think will help your winter game so I hope you enjoyed them
