00:00The smell of a new car may be intoxicating, but it can also come with some serious health risks.
00:05According to a new study published in Science Direct,
00:09that bouquet of smells is a combination of solvents, adhesives, rubbers, plastics,
00:14and fabrics used to create the car, and each material contains volatile organic compounds,
00:20also called VOCs, which can be deadly.
00:23Chinese and U.S. researchers found that the levels of cancer-causing chemicals in these new vehicles
00:28exceeded safety limits when the car was parked outside for days in a row.
00:33Formaldehyde, a known cancer-causing carcinogen,
00:36was detected at levels that exceeded Chinese national safety standards by 35 percent.
00:41Other dangerous chemicals found circulating at high levels throughout the new cars are benzene and acetylaldehyde.
00:49According to Metro, drivers and passengers could inhale these chemicals,
00:53or the chemicals can begin to seep through their skin.
00:56Researchers noted that opening a window helped rapidly reduce VOC concentrations.
