Inside London’s newest museum: V&A East launches with powerful Black music exhibition

London’s newest museum, V&A East, is opening in Stratford this weekend. Its debut exhibition, “The Music is Black: A British Story,” explores 125 years of Black British music, tracing its influence across genres, identity and culture.

00:12We are just so excited with what we've got to offer because this is a brand new V&A that's
00:19focused on a younger audience and it's still in terms of its quality every bit as thrilling as
00:26what you would have seen at the V&A in South Kensington or Dundee but if you come to our
00:32space you'll see a range of different kinds of ways in which you can think about creativity
00:39and making in ways that really make sense particularly for a younger audience.
01:02This is a very rich exhibition and to have it in this space as part of the V&A's family
01:08of sites and to have you know black music ordaining this space but also have it having it acknowledged
01:15as being of importance at this level over this floor space it's a beautiful celebration of
01:22acknowledgement but also it tells us about just how ubiquitous black music is.
01:36The design the fact that it is a vest to protect you from a fatal attack it tells us something
01:44about
01:44who's wearing that those who have suffered through fatal violence not only the victims but those that
01:51love them and it also tells us about identity with the use of the union flag on board and it's
01:57a
01:57performance costume at the same time so it's a multi-message object.
