Oh, Susanna! (1936) is an American Western musical directed by Joseph Kane and starring Gene Autry, Smiley Burnette, and Frances Grant. The story follows singing cowboy Gene Autry, who is robbed and thrown from a train by escaped murderer Wolf Benson, who then impersonates him.
Believed dead, Gene is rescued by traveling performers and must clear his name while Wolf uses Gene’s identity to commit further crimes. The plot blends music, comedy, and action, typical of Autry’s Republic Pictures era.

02:34Thank you very much.
04:58Hey, stranger.
04:58Wait a minute.
04:59Hey, you better take it easy here.
05:01Yeah.
05:01Look at this.
05:02Pretty weak, isn't it?
05:07I'll be all right now.
05:09Yeah.
05:10Well...
05:10Well, we're heading for Sage City.
05:12You can rest up there.
05:13Do you want to go with us?
05:14Thanks.
05:15I've got a lot of business to take up for the sheriff.
05:17The first town we're headed.
05:18Yeah.
05:18Well, we'll talk about that later.
05:20You come along with us here.
05:34Go through the train fairly, boys.
05:36If a fool puts up a fight, shoot to kill.
05:41I'm Sheriff Briggs.
05:42I've got a wire to search your train for an escaped murderer.
05:52Who's in there?
05:53Gene Autry, the radio star.
05:54We'll take a look inside anyway, for good measure.
05:56Good work.
06:03He's asleep.
06:03I won't disturb him.
06:13I reckon he's not on the train, Sheriff.
06:15He searched everywhere and couldn't find a place on him.
06:18That's about...
06:19That's about what he's done.
06:21He probably figured the train would be searched with a cold end here.
06:24Get your horses and comb the country.
06:40Well, goodbye, Miss Archie.
06:41So long.
06:44Goodbye, Miss Archie.
06:46So long.
06:55I didn't expect to see you in a phony outfit like that, Wolf.
06:58We got your wire signed, Benny.
07:00Come on.
07:01Flash is waiting in the car.
07:04Hank and I were beginning to get worried when you didn't show up, Wolf.
07:07We thought maybe you'd run into the law again.
07:10I did.
07:10The prison break worked out just as you had it framed, but I ran smack into a sheriff's
07:15posse.
07:16If I hadn't caught the hind end of the Limited and traded places with Autry, I'd be stretching
07:20a rope by now.
07:21This Autry's a radio singer, isn't he?
07:23He was very tough.
07:24He was until I knocked him out and threw his body out the train window.
07:28Now, Wolf Benson's dead and I'm Gene Autry.
07:31Yes, but...
07:32Oh, I've got all his identification papers.
07:34And that telegram shows that he loaned Jefferson Lee $10,000 in full cash not very long ago.
07:40Now, Lee hasn't seen Autry for 15 years, so here's my idea.
07:55Thanks, fellas.
07:57I'll be back to the theater soon as to see the sheriff.
08:07Pardon me, fellas.
08:09Did you tell me where I could find the sheriff?
08:12Yeah!
08:13In his office, just around the corner.
08:15Let's buy it.
08:38You want Benson, isn't it?
08:40Yeah.
08:52You want Benson, isn't it?
09:00Wolf Benson's in town, Sheriff, and he's looking for you.
09:03I ain't kidding you.
09:04He just asked me where he could find you.
09:06If Wolf Benson's looking for me, he's sure gonna find more than you'd expect.
09:10Come on, boys.
09:47Let's go.
09:48Hey!
09:49You can't do that to him.
09:51He's a pallard.
09:52Oh, he is, this is him.
09:53Yes!
09:54But I tell you, I am Gene Autry.
09:57Yeah.
09:57And I'm Bane Crosby.
09:59Boo-boo-boo-boo-boo.
10:00Oh, boo-boo-boo-boo yourself.
10:03If you let me wire east to my attorneys, I can prove my identity.
10:06You're not going to wire nobody.
10:08Why don't you let him prove he's Gene Autry?
10:11Wolf Benson wasn't on the train when he arrived here yesterday,
10:14and Gene Autry was, and that's good enough for me.
10:18What did the sheriff mean about Gene Autry being on the train when he came into town?
10:22That was Wolf Benson, only he didn't have sense enough to look at anything but his clothes.
10:30Yeah, okay.
10:32Answer to the wire you sent.
10:42It's from Sheriff Jones,
10:43who authorizes us to take Wolf Benson out in the morning and hang him.
10:52Come on, you two.
10:53The judge is waiting to sign your release.
10:56Oh, no.
10:57Well, we haven't had a decent meal in the day.
10:59Sir, listen, can't the judge wait?
11:00Get going.
11:01Wait a minute.
11:02I demand to know why I'm being held here in jail.
11:05If you haven't got sense enough to know, I'll tell you.
11:08Cottonwood County just authorized us to hang you in the morning, as per schedule.
11:12All right, come on.
11:13Just a minute, brother.
11:15Gene, don't worry.
11:16Because I'll get you out and have a corpus plea.
11:19Don't go nuts, Judge.
11:20I was there all my life.
11:35Dakota State City has decided to release you.
11:39On condition that you both leave town immediately.
11:43Oh, thank you, Your Honor.
11:44Thank you, Your Honor.
11:45Yeah, thank you.
11:47Your Honor, I should like you enter the plea
11:50of cum laudea hock insignia for the prisoner
11:54to give him the chance to prove
11:56that he is Gene Autry
11:58and not the despicable outlaw Wolf Bent.
12:03You may proceed.
12:05Thank you, Your Honor.
12:06Now, Your Honor may possibly recall
12:08the famous case of Reuben Owens versus O'Halloran.
12:13Page 112, Volume 9 of the Supreme Court Decisions,
12:18wherein the prisoner who enters a plea ad valorem
12:22is entitled pro bono publico to a hearing.
12:27E pluribus shooter.
12:29You're right.
12:31We'll give him a chance to prove his identity.
12:35Sheriff Briggs, bring to the court
12:37as many Gene Autry fans as you can locate.
12:41They shall decide the prisoner's fate.
12:44Now beat it, and don't let me catch either one of you
12:46in town after tonight.
12:49Come on, boys.
13:02Hey, hey!
13:03I had an awful hard time,
13:05but I finally persuaded the judge and the sheriff
13:08to let you prove your Gene Autry by singing to them.
13:10Yes, now they have condescended
13:12to let some of your fans be the jury, my friend.
13:16You've got me in a worse fix than ever now.
13:18I can't sing a note.
13:20That choking the sheriff gave me
13:21just about ruined my voice for a while.
13:24You can't sing, huh?
13:25Well, don't let it worry, pal,
13:26because me and the professor
13:28will figure out something swell, won't you?
13:29Oh, yes, of course, certainly.
13:39Professor, me and you have got to think up something.
13:46That's Gene Autry singing.
13:48Why, so it is.
13:49Say, do you suppose that we have been double-crossed?
13:52Hey, look.
14:03We are going to borrow that hologram.
14:05You're going to who?
14:06Wait a minute.
14:12Good afternoon, madam.
14:13Beautiful day.
14:15Pardon me just a moment.
14:23It is only fair for me to warn you
14:26that your listeners will be radio fans of Gene Autry,
14:30and that all are very familiar with his voice.
14:48Well, he must be mad.
14:50No, he...
14:51He's got hydrophobic.
14:52Well, come on!
14:53We've got to help him!
14:54Come on!
14:55What's the matter?
14:55Look out! Look out!
14:56He don't break him!
15:04When you get through practicing,
15:05suppose you start singing.
15:07All right, I'd like to get it tuned.
15:27The cowboy may roam from his homeland,
15:33way out on the great divide, but in his heart he will still be a cowboy, and long for a
15:51for his pony to ride.
15:56Dear old western skies, I want to go where the longhorn cattle roam.
16:10Dear old western skies, there'll never be another place like my old home.
16:22It seems that I can hear the cattle owing, seems that I can see the purple sage blowing.
16:37I hope old paint and I will herd the dogees by and by, under dear old western skies.
16:52Dear old western skies, dear old western skies.
17:01I'm sorry, my boys. Thank you.
17:04But these, uh, fits come on me every few minutes.
17:08I mean months. Sorry.
17:10Pardon me.
17:11Dear Briggs, you may release the prisoner.
17:14He has proven without a doubt that he is Gene Autry.
17:18Thank you very much.
17:20Did it work?
17:21Well, I believe so, but I can't tell you.
17:23Thanks, sir.
17:25Great, boy.
17:27Success. Milhouse and Daniels have scored again.
17:30Now listen, you go and get Gene and meet me at the livery stable.
17:32I'm gonna swap this outfit for some saddle horses and some clothes,
17:35and we'll get out of this town.
17:39Hurry up, fellas. Let's go.
17:41Well, nobody will ever recognize us now.
17:45I hope they don't.
17:52It's a Gene Autry record.
17:54Hill, western skies.
17:55I'll bet them two show producers tricked us
17:57and the lading Wolf Benson loose.
17:59Get the posse.
18:23Good boys, go that way.
18:24Good boys, go that way!
18:44This man quick I've got an idea
18:52Lead them up that way
19:03There they go
19:24They're circling back towards their horses
19:41There they go
19:44There they go
20:00There they go
20:05Do you know the way to Mineral Springs?
20:07Sure, I'd say it was about 300 miles straight south
20:10But it'll take about a week to ride it
20:12Well, let's get started
20:12I've got to get there as quickly as possible
20:19Love is calling us out west
20:26Where there's a dream nest
20:32Waiting down honeymoon trail
20:41Oh, that was beautiful, Marianne
20:44I agree with you, Aunt Peggy
20:45But it'll be that much better
20:47When Gene Autry is singing to us in person
20:48I can hardly wait to see him
20:50He sure helped us out of a tight spot
20:51I wonder how he looks after 15 years
20:57That must be Gene now
21:10I suppose you're Gene Autry
21:12You guessed right, ma'am
21:13I'm looking for Jefferson Lee
21:15Oh, Gene, you old son of a gun
21:17Well, you're a sight for sore eyes
21:19Listen, you remember my telling you about my niece, Marianne, don't you?
21:23This is her
21:23She's been in the East singing
21:24Now she's come out here to help with the entertaining
21:26I'm sure glad to know him, Marianne
21:28Oh, Mr. Baldwin, this is Gene Autry
21:30Baldwin?
21:31Come on, Gene
21:32Let's hurry on the house
21:32Ma's just been having a fit
21:34Ever since she got your last wire
21:41Well, it was Gene's mom
21:43Here he is
21:43Oh, it's so nice to see you, Gene
21:45Well, it's nice to be here, Mrs. Lee
21:48Mrs. Lee?
21:50Why Mrs. Lee?
21:51Well, that's your name, isn't it?
21:54Why, certainly
21:55But you used to call me Aunt Peggy
21:59You'll have to forgive me, Aunt Peggy
22:01I'd forgotten
22:04Can I see you alone for a minute?
22:07Certainly
22:08We can step into my office
22:17I've got some bad news for you, Mr. Lee
22:20I'll have to ask you to return that $10,000 I loaned you
22:24Why?
22:24You only let me have the money a month ago
22:26And I've already spent about $3,000 of it
22:29There's nothing else I can do, Mr. Lee
22:32I've had several business reverses lately
22:33And right now I'm in serious financial difficulties
22:36If you have the full $10,000, I'll have to take what I can get
22:39Well, I don't know what I'm going to do without the money
22:41I plan to use it to pay off my entertainers and buy my supplies for the summer
22:45I had every available room reserved, too
22:48It can't be helped, Mr. Lee
22:50I'm sorry
22:51Take off your glasses and let's see how you look after all these years
22:57Well, you've changed considerably
22:59A little heavier, a little older
23:01Well, I suppose the year will do something to all of it
23:09Oh, by the way
23:10Have you got that note I signed for you?
23:14Yes, sir
23:15Yes, anyway, I had it when I left New York
23:19I must have mislaid that note, Mr. Lee
23:21But I'll sign any sort of receipt you want me to
23:23You'll not sign any receipt and you'll not get any money
23:26Because you're not Gene Autry
23:29Why?
23:30What do you mean I'm not Gene Autry?
23:31Just what I said
23:33In the first place, I never gave him any note for that money he loaned me
23:35In the second place, he lived in Chicago and not in New York
23:39Now, you get out of here, you're a crook, before I send to the sheriff
23:41But you're crazy
23:42Here's the telegram you sent me on the train
23:44And I have plenty of identification in my luggage outside
23:47You may have this telegram and all of Autry's identification papers
23:49But still, you're not Gene Autry
23:52Now, I don't know what your game is, but I'm going to find out
23:55If you know what's good for you, Lee
23:57You'll come through with that money
23:59Otherwise, it'll be just too bad
24:02I'll see what the sheriff's got to say about that
24:16Something dreadful has happened, Marianne

35:37Are you sure?
35:38Absolutely.
35:39He had town dressed in Wolf's clothes
35:40and was pinched with the sheriff.
35:42Is Autry still in jail?
35:43No, he's sung his way out.
35:45Left Sage City with a couple of ham actors.
35:47Since then, he's disappeared.
35:48All right, the roundup starts tomorrow morning.

37:17You'll find trouble on each trail.
37:19There'll be times when you will fail, you'll be blown by wimps of chance, you'll find sorrow and romance.
37:25Ride on the carol, remember while you roam, you'll find the carol, a road that leads back home.
37:40Ride on the carol, the long, long trail is calling, ride on the carol, along the Rio Grande.
37:56You'll find trouble on each trail, there'll be times when you will fail, you'll be blown by wimps of chance,
38:02you'll find sorrow and romance.
38:04Ride on the carol, remember while you roam, you'll find the carol, a road that leads back home.
38:26And now, friends, it gives me great pleasure to announce Miss Mary Ann Lee and Mr. Tech Smith in a
38:32harmonious duet entitled By a Water Wheel.
38:48In the valley, there's a lacy river flowing, drifting ever onward for the sea.
38:59That's not Tech Smith, that's sure enough Gene Autry.
39:02We've got to get him out of the way before he puts a crimp on our plans.
39:05But it seems to croon a song of love to me.
39:15I'll always dream of a lazy stream
39:20Where a water wheel keeps turning on
39:30When shadows fall and the sun goes down
39:37Like a water wheel my dreams go on
39:46Beside the lazy river stands a shady tree
39:53Beside the lazy river stands a shady tree
40:08Where a water wheel keeps turning on
40:25Where a water wheel keeps turning on
40:53Where a water fell so far
40:56Where a water goes so far
41:00Well, we were dancing now
41:08And gonna have her not only
41:09Wait a minute, the knife's going to act as off.
41:11Now you shut up, Mr. Hunter.
41:21Now listen now, Frogger, you stop wiggling.
41:24You tell all those other fellas to get out of there,
41:26and they're liable to get hurt.
41:27But I said it's off!
41:32Now listen, quit pushing.
41:49Help!
41:51Go, go.
41:56Help!
41:58Help!
42:00You're killing me!
42:02Help!
42:04Help!
42:05Help!
42:05Help!
42:09Help!
42:11Help!
42:14Help!
42:17Help!
42:18Help!
42:19Help!
42:21Help!
42:22Help!
42:23Let him kill!
42:26I don't think he's hurt.
42:28He's just scared.
42:30Boy, it's sure it's a relief to find out I ain't dead.
42:33We're all relieved, Frog, and your knife-throwing act was a big success anyway.
42:38Well, folks, the round-up starts tomorrow, so you'd all better turn in and get some rest.
42:41Five o'clock comes pretty early in the morning, you know.
42:45Good night.
42:46See you in the morning.
42:47Bye-bye.
42:48Good night.
42:50Good night.
42:50Good night.
42:50See you in the morning.
42:51Good night.
42:52Good night.
42:52Good night.
42:53Good night.
42:54Good night.
42:54Good night.
42:55Good night.
42:56Why didn't you tell about the knife being thrown at you when the lights went out, Gene?
43:01Then you know who I am.
43:04There's a lot of things I can't tell you just yet, Mary Ann.
43:07You'll probably know a lot more about them tomorrow.
43:11Good night, and I'll see you in the morning.
43:13Good night, and please be careful.
43:15I will.
43:20Flash and his gang plan to rob the ranch safe tomorrow.
43:23Yeah.
43:24That means Wolf Benson will be here, and he's the man we'll want.
43:27Our plan of action is this.
43:29As our cows ride by, we will call them from on high.
43:37With a tie, I give thee, oh, I owe.
43:45As our cows ride by, they will answer from on high.
43:53With a tie, I give thee, oh, I know.
43:59They'll be washing o'er the donkeys on this earthly plane.
44:07They'll be riding till the dawning for the prairie's face.
44:15As our cows ride by, we'll be joining their morn high.
44:23With a tie, I give thee, oh, I owe.
44:31We'll stop here for lunch, boys.
45:01We'll stop here for lunch, boys.
45:32We'll stop here for lunch.
45:32We'll see you Friday.
45:58You stay out here and keep your eyes open, Hank.
46:31You stay out here and keep your eyes open.
46:32You stay out here and keep your eyes open.
46:32You stay out here and keep your eyes open.
46:33If you gents are through looking at that jewelry, suppose you reach for the roof.
46:38Turn around.
46:57What happened to you?
46:58Gene Autry knocked me out.
47:00He's probably inside right now.
47:03What are these two fellows doing with you, Sheriff?
47:05They're Gene Autry's pals.
47:06This is a frame-up.
47:08Why, Hank here...
47:09Shut up.
47:10Put him back on the horses.
47:19I'm sure glad you got here, Sheriff.
47:21Arrest this man, Sheriff.
47:23He's Gene Autry.
47:25I am Gene Autry.
47:27But he's Wolf Benson and he's in cahoots with Baldwin.
47:30Mr. Baldwin is a respected guest here.
47:31You admit your Gene Autry.
47:33That's enough for me.
47:34You go after Miss Lee.
47:36You two stay here until she shows up.
47:39Right.
47:46Come on, sit on your horse.
47:56You've got to listen to me, Sheriff.
47:57Wolf Benson and his men are here to raid the ranch.
47:59I know what I'm doing.
48:01You can do the rest of your talking from behind the bars.
48:07I could sure feel a rope around my neck that time, Flash.
48:10I've got to hand it to you for being a smart talker.
48:12You stick around me and you'll learn a lot of things.
48:14But we'd better work fast, though, now.
48:36All right, let's go.
48:36You!
48:36Come on.
48:36Move.
48:36Oof!
48:37Come on!
48:47Come on, let me through.
48:47Move over there. Come on, let me through.
48:52All right, Ben, don't let him get away.
48:55I'll be glad when Miss Lee gets here. I ain't keen about wetness and all them sparklers.
48:59Don't let that worry you. We'll take the job off your hands.
49:02Get their guns and tie them up.
49:08Come on.
49:38.
49:39.
49:52.
49:54Oh, my God!
50:42Come on, Sarni. Come on back here and fight.
51:11Come on, Sarni.
51:51Come on, Sarni.
51:54Come on.
51:59Come on.
52:03Come on.
52:03That's the man that killed my uncle, Sheriff.
52:06Vincent Framer.
52:07You ain't got nothing on me.
52:09Yeah?
52:09Well, Flash Baldwin is pretty badly hit, Wolf.
52:11And he just told me the whole deal.
52:13I'm sorry, Artie.
52:15When shadows fall and the sun goes down,
52:20Like a water wheel my dreams go on.
52:29Beside a lazy river stands a shady tree,
52:37A little bit of heaven's waiting there for me.
52:43I'll find my love by a lazy stream,
52:52Where a water wheel keeps turning on.
53:14I'll find my love by a lazy stream.
53:15I'll find my love by a lazy stream.
53:15I'll find my love by a lazy stream.
