00:00AI has been in the news a lot recently. That's because it is now at the forefront of things like
00:04copyright law and becoming eerily human-like with programs like ChatGPT. And it's exploding
00:09faster than ever, as AI tends to operate on an exponential curve. Meaning the smarter it gets,
00:15the faster it gets smarter. Which is why experts are now weighing in on whether AI will ever be
00:19smart enough to outsmart humans, or at least be on a level playing field. And the short answer is,
00:24yes, it will. Researchers with the Center for Humane Technology say,
00:28it took many years to get AI to the point where it was basically as intelligent as a 5-year
00:32-old.
00:32But then it took about half as much time for that same AI to reach the intelligence of a 7
00:37-year-old,
00:37and about a quarter of the time after that to be as smart as a 9-year-old. That means
00:41it will reach
00:41AI adulthood in short order. But the real kicker is, those same researchers say,
00:46we didn't realize it was as smart as it was until much later. Which is worrisome. However,
00:50other researchers, like computational neuroscience and biomedical engineering researcher Christina
00:55Mayer, tell Science Alert, they're not convinced. Mayer argues that even though they can beat
01:00humans in strategy-based games, or write entire papers in an instant, AI still lacks human skills
01:05like reasoning, problem solving, and decision making. But other experts say that quantum computing
01:10could be the key to the human intelligence threshold, and that if quantum computing breakthroughs
01:14continue, AI could even surpass us.
