00:00I'm Brett, and welcome to It's History.
00:01On May 24th, 1819, Alexandrina Victoria was born in London.
00:06She grew up in the Kensington Palace and became, at the age of 18, the Queen of England.
00:10Everyone was enthusiastic about their new young queen who started a new era.
00:14Later, this time would be known as the Victorian Age.
00:16It was an Albert of Saxe-Colberg who visited her.
00:19It was planned that they should meet because, well, he was a potential husband for her.
00:23On the 10th of February, 1840, they got married and she had nine children.
00:26Constant advances in industry and new discoveries in the sciences, such as Darwin's theories, characterize this new era.
00:33And also, great engineering achievements, such as the construction of large bridges and the emergence of sewage systems in London,
00:40showed the constant changes all around.
00:42Fails were installed in just two years after Victoria became the queen, the first train left the train station in
00:48Paddington.
00:48The British Empire began to grow more and more.
00:51And during the reign of the queen, it had quadrupled.
00:54Military conflicts were a part of everyday life.
00:56The queen suffered two great losses.
00:58In May, her mother died.
01:00And then Albert became very sick.
01:01He got weaker and weaker and finally died in December at the age of 42.
01:06That loss turned her life upside down.
01:08And she turned away completely from public life.
01:10She ordered statues of Albert to be built everywhere in the country.
01:14Built museums in his name and the well-known Royal Albert Hall in London.
01:19Now, the Israeli signal that she was now the Empress of India.
01:22Victoria was fascinated about the Indian culture and she liked the title of Empress so much that she started to
01:28use the title whenever she wanted to.
01:30She started to trust Israeli and he became one of her closest advisors.
01:33Finally, he convinced her to return back to the public.
01:36Her life became much more colorful again.
01:38The death of Queen Victoria on the 22nd of January 1901 at the age of 81 years caused mourning around
01:46the whole country.
