00:00I gotta tell you, this is so much worse than I thought it was going to be, in terms of
00:04the solitude of it, and the sense of utter isolation.
00:10Getting stuck somewhere inconvenient is bad enough, but sometimes things can take a turn for the worse.
00:17Just ask the two individuals who had to be rescued after their hot air balloon became tangled in a communications
00:22tower more than 900 feet above the ground.
00:25Welcome to WatchMojo, and today, we're looking at some of the most terrifying real-life situations where people became dangerously
00:33trapped.
00:34I mean, what am I supposed to do when we get out? If we get out, you hug her and
00:41you cry like a baby.
00:46Baby Jessica
00:47The operative word for the moment is may, of course, since it looked like, to repeat for emphasis, at one
00:53point much earlier in the day that they might be able to do it,
00:57but it turned out that Jessica McClure, the 18-month-old child's foot, was caught in a crevice and they
01:03just couldn't get her out.
01:04In October 1987, 18-month-old Jessica McClure became the center of one of the most gripping rescue stories in
01:12modern history.
01:12While playing in her aunt's backyard in Midland, Texas, the toddler accidentally fell into an extremely narrow well shaft only
01:20about eight inches wide and was stuck 22 feet underground.
01:24She remained that way for 58 tenths hours, wedged in a position that made rescue incredibly difficult.
01:32A paramedic armed with a tube of KY jelly and an obstetrician's forceps was lowered down the shaft.
01:38Slowly, the cable was pulled up, the child's parents waited, and so did we.
01:45Emergency crews worked around the clock, eventually drilling a parallel shaft and tunneling toward the trapped child.
01:52The dramatic rescue held views in abated breath across the United States.
01:57Thankfully, rescuers reached the toddler and pulled her out alive, making baby Jessica a symbol of hope and determination.
02:04Yeah, we did it, but I still can't believe it.
02:09Never a doubt.
02:12Oh, it was a miracle.
02:14The 2023 Batagram cable car rescue, Pakistan.
02:19The first car was shaking, then helicopters came and we gained some confidence.
02:24Meanwhile, those two brave rescuers are now being hailed heroes across Pakistan.
02:29Imagine the terror when an ordinary school trip turns into a terrifying ordeal high above a remote mountain valley.
02:36This was the case of six schoolchildren and two adults who found themselves suspended roughly 900 feet above the ground
02:43on a gondola near Batagram, Pakistan.
02:47The cable supporting the gondola snapped, leaving the car to dangle precariously for hours,
02:53while strong winds and mechanical instability made rescue extremely dangerous.
02:58Watch as this drone video shows up close the six children and two adults trapped 600 feet in the air
03:05after one of the cables holding their cable car snapped.
03:08Helicopters initially struggled to approach the swaying gondola, forcing rescuers to improvise.
03:14Eventually, highly trained commandos used zip lines and harness systems to reach the passengers one by one.
03:22After an intense and nerve-wracking operation that lasted nearly an entire day, all eight people were safely brought to
03:29the ground.
03:30Relief and joy are the faces of all those around.
03:35Stuck on the ocean floor.
03:37When you're lifting the helmet onto the diver's head, you look into their eyes.
03:41You can then see if the diver's happy or frightened out of his wits, because you can see more white
03:47than eyes.
03:48Working hundreds of feet beneath the ocean surface is already one of the most dangerous jobs on Earth.
03:54And in 2012, saturation diver Chris Lemons was to experience the worst of it.
04:00While performing maintenance work about 300 feet below the North Sea, Lemons' Lifeline cable suddenly snapped during rough weather.
04:08That cable normally supplied heat, communication, and, most importantly, breathable air.
04:14When I was nearly at the top, I noticed that Chris didn't seem to be going any further.
04:22I could tell something was wrong.
04:24Lemons' team scrambled to regain control of their vessel.
04:27With only a few minutes of emergency oxygen available in his backup tank, Lemons lay down and seemingly accepted his
04:35fate.
04:35But against incredible odds, Lemons' team managed to reach him in time, finding him unconscious but still alive in an
04:44underwater rescue to both remember and forget.
04:47Reg, Chris is responsive, and he's talking.
05:01Trapped inside a cement hopper.
05:03He was able to walk down, it's a very narrow gangplank, we walked him down and got him on the
05:06ambulance and he's being treated now.
05:08Industrial workplaces can hide unusual and unexpected hazards.
05:12One construction worker for the U.S. Pipe and Foundry found out about this the hard way after falling into
05:18a massive cement hopper while cleaning it.
05:21The large funnel-shaped container was designed to hold cement powder before it was mixed for construction use.
05:27Earlier today, they were telling me it was about two hours ago.
05:30A man who was working here at U.S. Pipe fell into cement up to his chest.
05:36As the cement gradually thickened and solidified around his legs, the worker found himself stuck.
05:42It was a race against time for firefighters and rescue crews who had to work carefully around the thickened cement
05:48and remove it while not harming the worker.
05:51After a tense and painstaking operation, they were able to free the worker before the cement hardened completely, preventing a
05:59potentially fatal situation.
06:02The Alpazat Caverns Rescue
06:04Cave exploring can be a tricky business.
06:07Six British soldiers exploring Mexico's Alpazat Caverns felt the brunt of this reality while trapped in the cave thanks to
06:15heavy rains that triggered flash flooding.
06:17Rising water cut off their exit route and forced the group to retreat to a narrow rocky ledge above a
06:23raging underground river.
06:25Thankfully, these were seasoned cavers.
06:27You alright?
06:29Yeah, yeah.
06:30Where's Dro?
06:31Huh?
06:32I don't know.
06:34They had packed enough resources to survive for days underground.
06:38After eight tense days, cave divers finally guided the trapped soldiers out one by one in a delicate six-hour
06:45rescue.
06:46Questions soon emerged about the expedition itself, as the group had entered Mexico on tourist visas and without notifying authorities,
06:54sparking rumors, diplomatic tension, and what one observer called a diplomatic dog's breakfast.
07:01The Nutty Putty Cave Incidents.
07:03Now, for over a day, search and rescue tried many methods to get John out, but they all failed.
07:09In the fourth attempt to pull John out, the rope and pulley system used broke, dropping John back down into
07:15the cave deeper than before.
07:17In 2009, a recreational caving trip in Utah's Nutty Putty Cave turned tragic for one John Edward Jones.
07:26While exploring the cave's narrow passages, Jones entered a tight vertical chute that quickly narrowed just a few inches across.
07:34Jones continued down the chute, crawling forward headfirst, and soon found himself wedged upside down in a fatal position within
07:42the cramped tunnel.
07:43As John headed deeper into the cave, he got trapped on the wrong path, now enclosed on all sides and
07:50facing upside down.
07:52The position placed enormous pressure on his body and made breathing increasingly difficult.
07:57Rescue teams worked tirelessly for more than 27 hours, using ropes and pulleys to pull him free.
08:04Unfortunately, the confined space and Jones' inverted position made rescue nearly impossible.
08:12Jones ultimately died inside the passage, and the cave was permanently sealed to prevent future accidents.
08:32Between a rock and an amputation.
08:35As I went out there, I made a choice not only to be by myself, but I didn't tell anyone
08:40where I was going.
08:42Alone in a remote part of the canyon, the boulder he was climbing became loose.
08:47Few survival stories demonstrate sheer determination like that of Aaron Ralston.
08:52In 2003, while hiking alone in Utah's remote Blue John Canyon, Ralston accidentally dislodged a massive boulder.
09:00The boulder pinned down his right arm against the canyon wall, leaving Ralston in a precarious position.
09:06Completely isolated and without access to communication channels, Ralston spent five agonizing days trapped with limited food and water.
09:14Climbing would probably be impossible with one hand.
09:18The blood loss and my dehydration, I think, are ruling that out.
09:26Despite multiple attempts, he could not move the rock, trapping his arm.
09:31Realizing rescue would not arrive in time, Ralston made a life-or-death decision.
09:36Using a small multi-tool knife, he amputated his own arm to free himself.
09:41After escaping the canyon, Ralston still had to hike several miles before reaching help, but ultimately recovered and continues climbing
09:49to this day.
09:50It's only going to cut my arm off.
09:55Please.
09:57It's a wall.
09:58Floyd Collins
09:59In another unfortunate story concerning cave expeditions, cave explorer Floyd Collins set out in 1925 to explore a newly discovered
10:08cave system in Kentucky.
10:10While navigating a narrow passage inside Sand Cave, a large rock shifted and pinned his leg, trapping him deep underground.
10:18Any bones broken?
10:20No, I guess not.
10:22Can't you get your legs out from under?
10:24What do you think I've been trying to do?
10:26Unable to move, Collins found himself in a dire situation.
10:30News of the incident spread quickly, turning the rescue effort into one of the first major media spectacles in American
10:37history.
10:38Reporters, engineers, and volunteers flocked to the site as rescuers attempted to dig a tunnel toward him.
10:44Unfortunately, despite the best efforts, the tight passage made rescue extremely difficult.
10:51After days of desperate efforts, Collins eventually died before he could be free.
10:57For this time, sometime, unci-onum.
11:01Ed's-do-an-pi-is-i-mong, misery-cordion.
11:04And do your activity, dominus, quick-grid, telequistic.
11:08Amen.
11:0969 days underground.
11:26Miners work under extreme duress and in precarious circumstances deep beneath the surface where the shifting of rock and stone
11:34is unpredictable.
11:36One such instance of unpredictability led to the catastrophic collapse of the San Jose copper mine in northern Chile,
11:44trapping 33 miners nearly 700 meters below the surface.
11:49Two small shafts have already been drilled about half a mile straight down to where the miners are waiting.
11:55These channels act as a sort of umbilical cord so that rescuers can deliver capsules of medicine, food, water, and
12:03communications equipment.
12:04The miners survived the initial collapse, but were also cut off from the outside world with limited supplies for survival.
12:11The fate of the miners remained unknown for 17 days until a drill probe returned with a note reading,
12:18We are well in the shelter, the 33 of us.
12:21After 69 days underground, a specially designed rescue capsule finally lifted each miner safely back to the surface.
12:31Yeah, baby! Come on!
12:38The Tom Luang Cave Rescue.
12:41The Tom Luang Cave Rescue.
12:45On June 23rd, 2018, 12 boys from the Wild Boars soccer team and their assistant coach ventured into Thailand's Tom
12:59Luang Cave after practice.
13:01Unfortunately, the team found themselves facing a flash flood that trapped them deep underground with no way out.
13:07For nine days, the team survived in total darkness, drinking water dripping from the cave walls while their coach taught
13:15meditation to keep them calm.
13:17Meanwhile, an enormous international rescue effort formed above ground.
13:36When British divers finally located the boys alive, the challenge shifted to extradition.
13:42The team and the coach were guided through submerged tunnels in a daring three-day operation until they were all
13:49successfully brought to safety.
13:51The moment you surface, a fantastic sense of elation and achievement.
14:04Which of these rescues shocked you the most?
