00:02Kielder Forest in Northumberland and Cumbria is marking 100 years since the first experimental
00:08tree planting in April 1926. What began as small-scale trials on remote moorland has grown
00:15into Britain's largest forest, covering around 250 square miles and home to more than 158 million
00:22trees. Large-scale planting followed in the 1930s after the Forestry Commission was created in
00:291919. Today, Kielder produces timber for construction and energy, supports wildlife including red
00:36squirrels and attracts tourism as the forest continues to shape communities and landscapes
00:41across the region today.
