00:00I'm Nick Hanushevsky as a professional saltwater fishing journalist I've
00:04explored the world's wildest fishing destinations now I'm bringing you there
00:08into the saltwater underground
00:30there are a few places left in the United States where pirates still rule the
00:47shores Key West take all the colorful characters and stories your mind can
00:51possibly imagine of expats salty fishermen pirate treasure and flowing
00:56drinks and drop them all in one spot and you've got Key West infamously known for
01:02its bawdy raucous atmosphere where literally anything goes the concrete
01:06public beckons visitors of all makes and models to let loose and imbibe but the
01:11underbelly of the town is built upon heritage of artists dreamers and
01:15wanderers alike for proof Ernest Hemingway spent much of his formative writing
01:21years in Key West where his six-toed cat descendant still roam his property but
01:25what drew Hemingway here was not just the solitude of the island life but the
01:30immense fishing opportunity I got in touch with native conch captain Jack
01:34Walker and good friend Wayne Justice to set a plan in motion to see if we could
01:38score catching a pelagic slamboree of sailfish tuna reef species and more
01:48my drop-off point started at the pristine marker resort situated on Key West
01:53harborside designed with luxury and catering to all your needs in mind the
01:58marker is the absolute primo place to stay if you want to feel completely and
02:02utterly taken care of as the grounds are fully packed with three swimming pools
02:06fully luxurious rooms that overlook the palm line grounds and the starboard
02:11restaurant for breakfast lunch and dinner putting you at ease and setting the
02:15stage for an adventurous days fishing
02:17I met up with captain Jack Walker of match point charters and we came up with a plan to
02:25see what the offshore opportunity could unveil to us on the open blue waters off of Key West
02:30all right Jack here we are man it's such a pleasure to get a chance to fish with
02:35you out here in Key West and uh what's the game plan for today what are we gonna do well
02:39we are start up with bait so I figure we'll try and go get some bait throw the net a little bit and
02:43head off to the reef edge and start throwing some of that bait you know freebies out the
02:47back and see we can't get to respond for us looking for like sailfish I guess maybe wahoo or
02:53sailfish should be our primary concern but always a chance of tunas or wahoo that's the game plan right
02:59hopefully it goes well it never goes well but we'll make it happen right all right let's go get that bait all right
03:13a big goggle eye can be seen so much better if you're in 200 feet of water you have a lot of water
03:20column you're trying to get something to see a bait um the goggle eye just has a bigger profile he's out
03:25there swimming along he's shiny you know he can get seen way better than a pilchard all right
03:35I'll come right through the nose just like that he stays on there good and he stays alive really well
03:38let me throw you another scoop and then you can cast right where they uh we're busting oh right there
03:42behind right behind us there yellow jack yeah yep right here right here short short perfect shot
03:49oh yeah nicer fish bigger fish right there there we go there you go that's a little bit bigger yellow
03:56jack oh yeah i see him back there looks like a yellow jack
04:03a little drag ripping now man yellow jack was on the surface feel that pilcher right back into his mouth
04:09yeah dog yeah dog whoo you got one on wayne's on i'm on double yellow jack
04:21wayne's got that one nice check that out
04:26yellow jack yeah wayne oh man this guy's dogging
04:29look at the size of that one dude
04:39the lines like straight under the oh man big old yellow jack dude that thing is huge dude
04:45yeah baby yellow jacking in key west right now starting it off whoo that's a beauty fish
04:59oh another one here looks like a yellow tail probably
05:04keeper size that one makes the team yeah on the single hook too
05:13nice little fish oh something just grabbed this
05:17i think you just took it off you got a mackerel burning dude ripping in that metal lure the mackerel just
05:22smoked it fast and loose with the metal drag up
05:32is that a king or zero mackerel oh that's wild it's a very nice zero zero hit a nice little
05:38metal lure right there just ripping it in super quick lightning fast and he comes and smokes it right
05:45throw him in the box right didn't even cut the lure off yeah we'll keep them there fantastic fantastic fair man
05:50reef fishing was lit but now it was time to target the big game of sailfish and tuna saltwater underground
05:58with nick konishevsky is brought to you by the florida keys and key west nick konishevsky on instagram and

06:11saltwater underground with nick konishevsky is brought to you by the florida keys and key west
06:17nick konishevsky on instagram and saltwater underground on youtube fisherman supply grumpy's
06:23tackle and these fine supporting sponsors just getting the kites up in the air they're going to
06:31help dangle our baits right on the surface which help us target most of our uh coastal pelagics those
06:36fish are looking for something to eat right on the surface of the water so with the kite you know you're
06:39going to line up to one of these clips here and you get a bite just like an outrigger it'll drop the
06:43bait in the water for you what do we want the bait to be doing here well with the kite you want to
06:48have that bait right on the surface of the water your hook will be out of the water and that goggle
06:52i'll be right on the surface he'll be dancing running around he'll be using his peck fins and his tail and
06:57swimming around like a little circle staying right on the surface of the water that hook right on the
07:01just out of the water creating a lot of action and what you'll see is a big explosion out there
07:06usually or if it's a sail you'll see the bill come out of the water as he circles around and tries to get
07:10him and then you'll see the kite dip usually a little bit and then it'll pop back up because
07:14that little clip just like an outrigger is just barely holding it so the kite will come down boop
07:19it'll pop off and you'll go slack on this rod for maybe four or five seconds you'll be winding
07:23winding think oh i wonder if he got it and then he's on there because he had that little knock down
07:28time to get that circle up just right once you knock that goggle eye down basically out of the clip
07:33you just want to kind of reel tight to it and just kind of hold on to the rod let the circle hook do its
07:37work and you're on right okay awesome bottom rod just went off with the pilchard on it
07:45see maybe a snapper or grouper he's not running fast though mutton snapper looks like hey a little
07:52mutton you know it's funny a little fish like that actually pulled you know obviously we're fighting
07:5624 ounces away too but but those are beautiful little fish man first month on board you know
08:02hopefully it'll be bigger ones down there maybe get a black grouper red grouper or something like that
08:06on the pilchard still waiting for one of the goggle eyes to go down with a sailfish wahoo king mack
08:12we'll see we saw one king mackerel vault out of the water out here it's probably like
08:16three four foot long they're in the area keying in on this bait maybe they'll take one of the baits that's
08:25how about the light here for the goggle eye on the kite bait and we can grab the rod now he's fighting the
08:29sailfish right now unbelievable action look at him go tail walking for you yeah look at that yeah buddy
08:42that sail's coming clean out of the water greyhounding you know with the tail slapping oh man that
08:47thing's lively that's the thing with sailfish you gain a little bit of line they start zipping right
08:52back out again you know see how long it takes here we're just working them up real slow
09:01no and as we idle along we're keeping him swimming forward trying to keep him comfortable yeah buddy
09:06we already got the leader so that's a legitimate catch but now let's get him in for some pictures
09:11right let's see what he's just about done yeah just back to one yeah that's the shot

10:10them in man dreams happen it's working baby nice work i'm glad we got jackie yeah
10:19it's like flying the kite you gotta let it catch a little bit go out a little bit further a little bit
10:24more vertical a little bit further out more vertical
10:34we got the double header right now they got us tangled we gotta get this tangle undone is this me

11:46double header yeah
11:49releasing a few sailfish was a blast but now it was time to chase down some blackfin tuna to put
11:54on the grill just like we did on the reef we're throwing that bait and chumming it all up it's just
11:59everything's gonna be scaled up a little bit might as well go look for some blackfin if we're out
12:02here right hopefully there's a few around
12:07there you go he's on nice oh that's oh man it's heavy that's him oh nice work i think we got our first

14:19after i got back to dock as a true fisherman i had to jump right in the car and get to the
14:24hemingway house where my journalistic side absolutely had to visit
14:28oh man as a professional journalist my entire career one of my biggest inspirations was ernest
14:35hemingway and when in key west i have to visit the ernest hemingway house let's go check it out
14:41oh hey alexa how are you good how are you such a pleasure to come here absolutely welcome come on in
14:48so tell us a little about the ernest hemingway home we do tours every 15 minutes okay uh they're about
14:57a half hour long but we always recommend guests to give themselves about an hour when visiting
15:02property okay right and every room has a little bit of spirit and soul and a story to it right
15:07absolutely so every there's all these little details from when ernest and pauline lived here with
15:12their sons okay let's go check out the rooms okay you got it yeah the pillar was his fishing boat that
15:17he had built and shipped down that's the most famous boat you know like papa's pilar absolutely
15:22but this showcase here in the living room kind of like his marlin catches uh you know shots of the
15:27pillar when he's fishing they really use these fishing he did oh man can you believe that let's move
15:33on to the next room you got it let's go saltwater underground with nick honeshefsky is brought to
15:45you by the florida keys and key west nick honeshefsky on instagram and saltwater underground on youtube
15:52fisherman supply grumpy's tackle and these fine supporting sponsors
15:57so this is the boy's room we showcase when he went to africa and he did hunting he was obviously
16:05a big game hunter not just a big game fisherman the big game hunter yeah he loves all the outdoor
16:10things yeah let's check out the next one all right oh wow now we're getting really personal here huh
16:16yeah this is his master bedroom oh jeez i feel like i'm almost infringing upon his soul you know
16:23right but uh wow this is just amazing to be able to touch a part of his spirit and his soul
16:27let's go check out more yeah comes outside here from his bedroom and then and when he actually lived
16:34here he would leave his bedroom early morning and he had a catwalk that went straight to his
16:39writing studio are we able to go check out his writing studio let's go do that i wish the catwalk
16:43was still here absolutely so here is the writing studio oh my gosh you don't realize my heart's having
16:51like palpitations right now i mean this is where he would sit down pour all his thoughts on the paper
16:57with this you know typewriter here and you could feel like the soul here like the magic of as a writer
17:03look and he's got his cats coming in to greet us today how you doing buddy wow talk about inspiration
17:10he had his own pool here too huh so it wasn't always here uh when they moved into this house he actually
17:15had a boxing ring oh really in the yard and then a few years later he ran off uh with martha gellhorn
17:25on assignment and while he was starting that affair pauline got wind of it and she ripped out his
17:33boxing ring and she installed the pool hell hath no fury like a woman scored right absolutely oh my god
17:39and of course he returned right as they're filling the pool the cement is wet and he just assumes
17:48she just spent all his money to build this pool because it is pretty lavish and huge and so he went
17:56in his pocket and he pulled out a penny and he was like if you're gonna spend all my money you might as
17:59well have my last red cent and he like flung it towards her so she hurried up and pushed it right into
18:06the wet cement so she could like laugh with all her friends at dinner parties because in fact her
18:12uncle gus paid for the pool oh my gosh so the pool is in essence an act of vengeance yes and so with
18:19the hemingly house it's known for all the six-toed cats that are here can you tell us a little bit
18:24about the cats how many there are they have names absolutely so currently we have 61 cats on property
18:29okay uh they all carry the polydactyl gene that gives them the extra toe but only about half show it
18:35hey i have to say thank you so much for taking us on this tour thank you so much for visiting
18:39thank you alexa riding high on the hemingway vibes it was time to cook our catch at the hogfish bar and
18:47grill hey nick what's up i heard you killed it yeah you know why you had the best captain in town
18:56kidding me oh so what you got today we always come to hogfish bar and grill whenever i'm in key west and
19:01we got blackened tuna we got yellowtail snapper we got yellow jacks right in here too wow you
19:06didn't cook it up there listen i'm gonna do something nice because we got that bring your
19:10own catch here all right when you do some blackened tuna we'll do some tacos okay they're nice snapper
19:15tacos and maybe some sandwiches or some sliders something like that the hogfish bar and grill
19:21in stock island and owner bobby mangelli prides itself on being the ultimate fisherman's bar and grill
19:27though other keys restaurants tap their catch and cook menu the hogfish bar and grill takes it to 11
19:33preparing our snapper tuna and yellow jacks in a tasty array of black thin tuna sashimi pan fried
19:40coconut and crusted snapper perfection cooked every which way possible to our liking paired with some
19:46free-flowing beers a day's catch is always celebrated to the maximum
19:51i like to think of myself as having a little pirate in me and i think all saltwater anglers
20:00alike feel that same way to some degree key west offers you that chance to live the lifestyle in
20:06every which way catching numerous jacks snapper black thin tuna with captain jack and seeing
20:12wayne release his first sailfish ever was bar none the best of times touring ernest hemingway's home
20:19and to touch the actual typewriter he wrote some of his most famous novels on was a highlight of my
20:24life so in hemingway's spirit i had to honor papa himself and got myself good and warmed up at all
20:30the duval street bars in key west ending my time at the spot where much of it all begins for saltwater
20:37fishing journalists drinking beer and hemingway's two famous bars of sloppy joe's and captain tony's
20:43saloon cheers key west well done
