“Mantis” doesn’t pretend the assassin business is some clean professional sport. An ace killer comes back after a hiatus, thinking he’s stepping into familiar territory. Instead, the contract-killer scene is in full disorder mode because the old rules have been thrown out. And just to make it more uncomfortable, he reconnects with his trainee friend Jae-yi, who’s not exactly there to hand him a handbook. Then there’s Dok-go, the retired legendary killer. The guy who “isn’t in the game anymore”… except he’s now running the organization. So congrats, you’re watching a secret society try to control the fallout with new methods and plenty of egos. Who ends up owning the underworld? The movie’s version of subtlety is zero, and honestly, that’s the point.

„Mantis“ macht keinen Hehl daraus, dass Killer-Alltag meistens nach Streit, Hierarchien und falschen Versprechen schmeckt. Ein Assassine kommt nach einer Pause zurück in die Auftragskiller-Branche und landet nicht etwa in einer ruhigen Neuausrichtung, sondern mitten im Machtkampf. Sein Lehrlingsfreund Jae-yi ist dabei. Und dann taucht Dok-go auf, die legendäre Klinge im Ruhestand, die angeblich nur „kurz“ schaut. Spoiler: Jetzt leitet er die Organisation, also will niemand mehr nur still funktionieren. Alte Regeln sind weg, der Geheimbund rutscht ins Chaos und daraus wächst eine neue Sorte Attentäter. Klingt nach Ordnung? Wird es nicht. Eher nach „viel zu viel Ehrgeiz für alle“. Sehr brauchbar, wenn du Lust auf harten, unterweltigen Ränkekram hast.
