1917. Two music students in Boston, Lionel and David, aren’t chasing fame. They’re chasing folk songs that actually come from somewhere. They bond over the kind of music you can’t fake, and then time does what time does. A few years later, they reconnect and head into the remote parts of Maine to collect songs and voices from the people living there.
It sounds gentle, but it’s not just a pastoral playlist. The whole project feels like a race against forgetting. World War I sits in the background like an unwanted guest, and every recorded moment raises the same question: are you preserving culture, or are you taking it? The movie knows it, even when it’s busy making you listen.
----------

00:04Sound is invisible, but it can be physical. It can touch something. It can make an impression.
00:15You ever think about how you want your wife to look? Not really. I have a hobby in the summers,
00:21collecting songs. Just come. Put your hand on your throat. Now, huh? Feel something? That sound.
00:36You worry at all? What we're doing? What we're doing? You know, this. I don't worry. I think I admire
00:44you.
00:48Don't sing love songs, you'll wake my mother. I leave this week to war.
01:01She's sleeping here right by my side. In her right hand is silver. I guess I feel like I'm at
01:12the end of something.
01:12She says that I can't be your bride.
01:17At the end of something, what was the beginning?
01:24You've got a whole life ahead of you. A bigger life.
01:33You have no idea what I know, what I've seen, about how things work.
01:47She says that I can't be your bride.
01:52Would you forgive me for looking back?
01:54You have no idea what I know.
