00:00In the early 1800s, a man named Dr. John Drish made his way from Virginia to Tuscaloosa, Alabama.
00:07He was a respected physician, but also a businessman who made money through medicine,
00:12construction, and investments. Drish arrived in Tuscaloosa in the year 1822,
00:18and later married a wealthy widow named Sarah Owen. With his growing fortune and Sarah's
00:24inherited wealth, the couple decided to build a mansion that would become one of the finest
00:29in the area. Construction on their home began in the year 1835. It took two years to complete,
00:36and became known as Monroe Place. The house sat at the center of a large plantation that stretched
00:42across 350 acres. Drish designed the mansion himself in the Greek revival style, featuring towering
00:49pillars and rooms filled with detailed plasterwork and wood carvings. Much of the elegant craftsmanship
00:56was done by the enslaved artisans Drish owned, some of whom were highly skilled in plaster and
01:01ironwork. By the time the mansion was finished in 1837, Drish had retired from medicine and devoted
01:09himself to his various businesses. He was wealthy, respected, and had created a home that showed off
01:16his power. But beneath all of that success, the family's story was marked by pain and sorrow,
01:23and it wouldn't be long before the mansion's dark history began to unfold. Drish had a daughter
01:30named Catherine from his first marriage. After her mother died, Catherine was sent away to live with
01:36relatives until Drish remarried. When she finally returned to live with her father and stepmother at
01:42Monroe Place, the relationship with her father was tense. Some accounts suggest that Drish could be cruel
01:50and controlling, especially when Catherine fell in love with someone he disapproved of. It's said that
01:56when Catherine refused to give up the man she loved, her father locked her in a room and kept her
02:01from
02:01eating properly until she gave in. The young man was forced to leave town, and Catherine was made to
02:07marry someone else, a man named William King. That marriage ended badly as well. Catherine gave birth
02:15to three children, but one of them died young. Her husband later divorced her, claiming she had lost
02:22her mind, and sent her back to live with her father. At the time of her return, the Drish house
02:29was being
02:30remodeled. Drish added an Italian-style three-story tower to the home, possibly out of jealousy toward
02:37another wealthy man in town. That tower, which once symbolized power and pride, would soon become
02:43the focus of many ghost stories. Life inside the Grand Mansion continued to darken. By the time the
02:50Civil War ended and slavery was abolished in Alabama in 1865, Drish was financially ruined. He turned to
02:57gambling and drinking, and the once powerful man began to spiral. In the year 1867, tragedy struck.
03:06Dr. John Drish died after falling down a staircase inside the house. Many believe his death was
03:13caused by his drinking, but others have said he seemed to sense something was coming. Not long before
03:19his fall, Drish had begun making plans for his funeral. He wanted candles placed around his casket
03:26in the upstairs room. A final, eerie request from a man who had built a home filled with pain.
03:31Sarah Drish followed his wishes. She arranged candles around his body and instructed the household
03:39servants to keep them for when she died, so she could have the same tribute. But when she finally
03:45passed away 17 years later, in the year 1884, the candles were nowhere to be found. Shortly after her
03:54funeral, a strange call was made to the local fire department. Someone reported a large fire coming
04:00from the tower of the Drish house. Firefighters rushed to the scene, but when they arrived, there was no fire.
04:08The tower was cold and empty. Over the years, that strange phantom fire would be seen again and again,
04:15with no explanation. Many now believe it was Sarah Drish trying to light the candles herself,
04:22desperate to finish what had been promised to her. After Sarah's death, the house passed through many
04:29hands. It became a school in the early 1900s, when the Tuscaloosa Board of Education bought the property.
04:36By 1925, it had been turned into a warehouse, and later, around 1940, it was taken over by the Southside
04:46Baptist Church. Though the building was used for many different things over the years, one thing never
04:52changed. The strange feeling that someone or something was still inside. Visitors to the Drish house have long
05:01reported paranormal activity. Some say they hear soft footsteps in empty hallways. Others feel cold
05:08drafts, even when the windows are closed. The most unsettling spot is a small bathroom near the tower.
05:16People have seen shadowy figures standing near the window, and others have reported a strong floral
05:22smell with no source. A scent some say is linked to Catherine Drish, who loved gardening. But nothing
05:30compares to the sightings of fire in the tower. People have called in reports, swearing they saw flames in
05:37the top of the house. Yet every time, nothing is found. Locals believe it is the ghost of Sarah Drish,
05:44still trying to recreate the funeral she never had, still mourning a life filled with loss and grief.
05:51The house may change, but its past continues to echo in every creek and shadow. The Drish house still
05:58stands today in Tuscaloosa. Restored and repurposed, the house has hosted weddings and events, but its
06:05haunted reputation has only grown. Paranormal investigators and curious travelers continue to
06:11visit, hoping to glimpse the strange lights, smell the mysterious perfume, or catch sight of the woman in
06:18mourning. Some leave convinced they've experienced something beyond explanation. The story of the Drish house
06:25is more than a ghost tale. It is a reminder of promises broken, grief never healed, and the weight of
06:32the past. Dr. John Drish built his mansion to show his wealth and success, but what remains is a home
06:40filled with sorrow and secrets. The haunting of the Drish house isn't just about what happened after death,
06:47it's about everything that happened while they were still alive. Sarah Drish was denied her final wish.
06:54Maybe that's why she still lingers. Maybe she's still lighting the candles herself,
06:59one by one, in the house that would never truly let go of its past.
