00:00Tomorrow, Artemis II will arrive home,
00:02blazing through Earth's atmosphere at nearly 40,000 kilometers per hour.
00:07As it descends, temperatures around the spacecraft can reach about 2,800 degrees Celsius,
00:15hotter than lava.
00:17But the capsule is protected by a powerful heat shield made from a material called Avcoat.
00:23This isn't just a barrier.
00:25It's ablative, meaning it absorbs and sheds heat.
00:30As the temperature rises, the outer layer chars and burns away,
00:35carrying extreme heat with it.
00:37This controlled erosion protects the structure underneath,
00:40keeping the inside safe and stable,
00:43allowing astronauts to survive one of the most intense re-entries ever attempted.
