00:10It had been four years since the surrender of the Axis powers,
00:15and the end of the most devastating war the world had ever, ever known.
00:21Here, these 12 leaders gathered to make a sacred pledge to defend each other against aggression,
00:28provide their collective security, and to answer threats as one,
00:34because they knew to prevent future wars, to protect democracies,
00:40to lay the groundwork for a lasting peace and prosperity, they needed a new approach.
00:46They needed to combine their strengths.
00:48They needed an alliance.
00:51And here they signed the Washington Treaty and created the North Atlantic Treaty Organization.
00:57The single greatest, most effective defensive alliance in the history of the world.
