Understanding the vaccination process can help make the experience much smoother. In this video, I visit a pharmacy to document the steps involved in getting a flu shot and discuss why staying up to date is a vital part of community health. 🛡️

What this video covers:

The Initial Step: 💻 The process typically begins with an online booking. This involves a brief medical questionnaire covering your history and any allergies to ensure the vaccination is safe and appropriate for you.

Community Protection: 👵👶 We discuss how getting vaccinated helps protect not only the individual but also vulnerable groups, including the elderly and young children.

Nasal Spray for Children: 👃 For the first time in Australia, a nasal spray flu vaccine is available for children, providing a needle-free option for families.

The Administration: A look at the consultation and the physical process of receiving the vaccine at the pharmacy.

Medical experts in Australia are currently highlighting the importance of vaccination due to the circulation of highly contagious seasonal strains (such as the Super-K subclade). Taking this precaution helps support public health and reduces the impact on the broader medical system. 🇦🇺

00:12Hi guys, I'm here at Priceline Pharmacy in Circus Paradise and I'm about to brave my annual flu shot.
00:20And I get my flu shot every year because about 10 years ago I didn't get it one winter and
00:26I got so sick.
00:27I was sick for about 3 months and ever since then I get it every year.
00:32We're lucky enough to be here with Priya, she's the pharmacist on duty today.
00:37How important is it for people to get a flu shot?
00:41It's pretty important because it's not only a bad flu, it can lead to complications like pneumonia and hospitalisations as
00:48well.
00:49So it is important to protect yourself and the vulnerable population around you as well.
00:54And I did look it up this morning, according to the World Health Organisation, the flu kills, what is it,
01:02about over 650,000 people or so.
01:05Yes, yes. So like especially in Australia, it's the government who's funding you.
01:11Yes.
01:11So it's free for you, so it's better that you just come and get, it's a matter of being a
01:15needle but it can save you all and people around you as well.
01:18Like especially the older population, young kids and elderly population, yeah.
01:24And we've now got nasal spray vaccinations for the little ones right now.
01:28Yeah, that's pretty new in Australia. I mean it has been around the world for a long time.
01:31But in Australia, it has just been like launched this year. It's for other kids, it's needle free, pain free,
01:38but it protects, gives the same protection.
01:41Yeah. And the one thing I did look up to about the flu and how it kills people, the numbers
01:46will talk about the flu killing people.
01:47But then all the complications, like you said, there's heart attacks as a result of the flu, there's and all
01:52of that.
01:53So yeah, apparently the number that kills his life is even more than that.
01:57Yes, exactly. So especially when it comes to older population who have low immunity, they are at high risk.
02:03So it's better to protect yourself and people around you as well.
02:06Yeah. Well look, do you think most people get the flu vaccine or what's their compliance like?
02:11What I've observed this season is elderly population, they are like on top of it.
02:16They keep protected and they stay protected, but it's the younger population which I think still needs to get some
02:23sort of motivation and encouragement to get it done.
02:25Yeah. And it's only like once a year, just one needle free of cost once a year that will protect
02:30you, so why not?
02:31Why not indeed, which is why I'm getting it today. Yeah.
02:35So I'll fill out the paperwork. Yes. And then I'm about to get it. Yeah.
02:41And it doesn't hurt. It's a very thin needle that goes inside your arm.
02:45Yeah. And it doesn't hurt much.
02:48I'm still going to pinch.
02:49No, that's all good.
02:51Whenever I'm getting any procedure, I do sort of pinch somewhere else just to distract myself.
02:56Yeah, that's okay. It's going to sting a little bit and it's nearly done.
03:02So now you are protected for another year. That's it.
03:06See, that was it. That was it. That was probably about like a mosquito bite.
03:11Yes. It doesn't hurt much.
03:12And there's a bit of pressure. That's probably the difference between a mosquito bite.
03:16Exactly. Yeah, a little bit of pressure I've got to get.
03:18Please hold it for me.
03:20Thank you so very much. I really appreciate it.
03:23And last year was a particularly bad year and there's a nasty strain this year I heard too.
03:28Yes. So every year the flu strain changes and that's why the new vaccine is released every year.
03:33So if you've had vaccine maybe during the later months of pre-25, you still have to get the new
03:39one because this year is a new flu.
03:41Yes, exactly. Yeah.
03:43Thank you so very much. So I really hope this encourages other people just go into the pharmacy.
03:48In Australia it's free and there's probably schemes all around the world too that we support this.
03:53So get your flu vaccination. It could save you or someone else's life.
03:57Yes. Thank you so much.
03:58Bye. Thank you.
04:03Bye.
