Ten-year-old Willow tags along with her parents on one of their secret late-night walks into an ancient forest. Because of course the adults in this story think that whispering “nothing to worry about” while walking into the woods is a great parenting strategy.

Then she witnesses her father’s horrifying transformation. And it’s not just “boo, scary monster.” The film makes it clear this is tied to some old family secret, one they have been trying to hide for generations. Willow spends the rest of the story doing the only thing a kid can do in an escalating nightmare. Lie. Panic quietly. Hope nobody notices that something is coming for her too.

The Beast Within is a UK horror that’s moody and tense, even if it doesn’t always land its scares. Still, for a low-budget dark fairytale gone wrong, it’s oddly watchable.

Willow ist zehn, neugierig genug für eine heimliche Nachttour, und leider ausgerechnet dort erwischt sie die Wahrheit: Ihr Vater verwandelt sich. Nicht so „Oh, die sieht nur komisch aus“-mäßig, sondern eher „die Familie hat seit Ewigkeiten einen Albtraum im Keller“-mäßig. Ab da ist das alte Geheimnis der Vorfahren nicht mehr nur Erzählstoff, sondern klebt an allem. Willow versucht tapfer, das Ganze zu verstecken. Spoiler: Verstecken funktioniert in einem uralten Wald ungefähr so gut wie Türen gegen Nebel.

Der Film aus dem UK fährt ordentlich in Richtung Horror-Schauer. Die Stimmung ist durchgehend dunkel, die Ideen sind da, aber das Timing stolpert manchmal. Trotzdem: Wenn du Lust auf ein düsteres Familiendrama mit Verwandlungs-Problem hast, schau rein.
