A summer in the south of France should be harmless. Cécile is 17, lounging with her widowed father Raymond and his current girlfriend, Elsa. It’s that specific kind of easy, where everyone’s pretending feelings are optional. Then Anne arrives. The “strict friend of her late mother” energy is real, and she’s not just visiting. She’s aiming to marry Raymond. Cécile hears the plan and immediately starts cooking up an intrigue to protect her freedom. It’s smart, stylish, and definitely not innocent. And the more she pushes, the more the movie tightens the screws until “tragic consequences” stop being a warning and start being the bill. If you like stories where glamour and manipulation share the same room, this one’s for you.
----------

Transkript
00:06François Saigon, who at the age of 21 has written three bestsellers, visits the set
00:12A Bonjour Tristesse, her first novel which bought her world fame at the age of 18, and
00:18which is the first of her works to be filmed.
00:20Actually, it's not a set, but a real villa on the Riviera, near Saint-Tropez, belonging
00:25to a famous French newspaper man.
00:27The entire picture has been filmed by Otto Preminger, not in artificial sets, but in the real
00:33locales of the book, which the picture follows faithfully.
00:37I wake up every morning and say, Bonjour, at least it is.
00:47My smile is void of laughter, my kiss has no caress, I'm faithful to my lover, my bittersweet
01:09priestess.
01:12This is my dance.
01:13It doesn't seem to be.
01:18I, however, am 4,000 miles away from the glorious Riviera, interviewing Miss Saigon for the magic
01:25of modern techniques, sitting here at my desk in Washington.
01:31Mademoiselle Saigon, how do you explain the enormous popularity of your novels all over
01:38the world?
01:39I don't explain it.
01:40Now, as one of the world's most successful young people, what do you think the youth of
01:44today is searching for?
01:46What is their aim in your opinion?
01:47It's the same thing as the other generation, to be happy and to live in peace.
01:52Why are your books filled with melancholy, a certain sadness, as the French say, tristesse?
01:58I don't think that my books are sad.
02:00Now, when you saw Bonjour, Tristesse being filmed, how did it feel to see your story, your
02:06characters, actually coming to life?
02:08Oh, it's very funny to see.
02:12I don't think they have exactly the physical from my personage, but I think that it's
02:20neither the same.
02:22But I found they were very charming.
02:26You mean they didn't look physically exactly the way you imagined, but you found them charming.
02:32What about Jean Seberg, who played the part of Cecile?
02:35Did you find that she was well cast to play the heroine of your book?
02:38Yes, she sings very well.
02:40And Debra Carr, David Devin, and Jean Seberg will be delighted to know that you approve
02:47of their work.
02:48But may I ask, what are going to be your future plans?
02:52Oh, I'm just going to walk and to drive my life.
02:58I hope you drive your life carefully.
03:01And now let's take a look at some scenes from Bonjour, Tristesse, that Otto Preminger filmed
03:08with an all-star cast.
03:09And I predict that you'll enjoy it as much as I.
03:17You said we weren't to do this anymore.
03:19I don't care.
03:27Cecile.
03:28Cecile.
03:35Boccante Cassidy.
03:3617 now isn't what it was when you were 17.
03:39I'm not a child, Ann, and I won't be treated like one.
03:58Oh, I'm getting dizzy.
04:03Better?
04:05Better.
04:11Better.
