When the Deetz family returns to Winter River after a tragic accident, you’d think the reunion would be about healing. Cute. Lydia is still haunted by Beetlejuice, which means her life never gets to be normal for even five minutes.

And then comes Astrid. Teenagers, as usual, create their own problems. But she tops the normal level of chaos when she discovers a mysterious recreation of Winter River in the attic. She doesn’t do it to summon trouble. She just accidentally opens a portal to the underworld, packed with the dead.

Now you’ve got chaos spilling between both worlds, like the universe can’t decide which side is the messiest. The movie keeps hinting at one very specific catastrophe. No one has said Beetlejuice three times in a row yet. But it feels like the countdown just started.

Die Deetz-Familie kommt nicht etwa wegen Harmonie nach Winter River zurück. Ein tragisches Unglück zwingt sie zusammen, und natürlich bringt das Chaos direkt neue Gäste mit. Lydia ist nämlich immer noch nicht losgeworden von Beetlejuice. Und das ist nicht nur „gelegentlich spukt er rum“. Das ist eher: Er ist der fiese Mitbewohner der Unterwelt.

Dann sitzt auch noch Astrid in der Teenager-Falle. Eigentlich nervt sie nur mit pubertärem Chaos. Bis sie auf dem Dachboden einen Nachbau von Winter River findet und dabei, ohne böse Absicht, ein Portal in eine Unterwelt voller Toter öffnet. Ab da läuft alles gleichzeitig schief. Oben und unten, Türchen auf und Konsequenzen rein. Und ja, irgendwann zählt nur noch eins: Niemand hat Beetlejuice schon dreimal hintereinander gesagt. Noch nicht.
