Édouard Manet calls him the “painter of all painters”. Salvador Dalí crowns him “the glory of Spain”. Pablo Picasso even makes him a full-on idol with a series of paintings. But the film doesn’t stop at name-dropping. It points at the work: Las Meninas, portraits of the Spanish royal family, the Pope, and even ordinary people. Still, lots of details stay blurry. Where does that unmatched realism come from? And why did the Impressionists basically catch up a century later? It’s part art history, part “okay, how did you do that?”
