00:00The crazy thing about the toilet is that even though it's in the floor, once you're in there, you don't
00:05have a clue.
00:06You have no idea whether you're in the floor or which way your head's facing or anything.
00:09So by the time you jump in there, you could be floor, ceiling, wall, doesn't matter.
00:14Alright, we're going to take a trip into the toilet here.
00:17Now, one interesting thing is, yes, it's in the floor, but bye guys, I've got some business to take care
00:23of.
00:23See ya.
00:25Once we're in here, a couple things become important.
00:28You need handholds because you're just floating up all over the place.
00:31You need to keep yourself down on the toilet seat.
00:34Also, you can't tell which way is up.
00:37And finally, all of this wild orange foam is actually taped over insulation because our toilet is a little bit
00:45on the loud side.
00:46So you have to wear hearing protection when you're in here, but we're making that work.
00:51We're making that work.
00:52It's just another thing we have to coordinate with each other.
00:53Alright, all clear.
00:55Open in the floor.
00:56Clear.
00:57Clear.
00:57To make our tiny capsule feel a little bit bigger, we have named some of our rooms in our house.
01:04So, Tano, why don't you tell us a little bit about the room you're in right now?
01:07I'm in basically the kitchen.
01:09So, over here we have a potable water dispenser.
01:13So, that's just the kitchen sink.
01:14This is where we need to come to pour water in our glass and drink it or to rehydrate our
01:19food.
01:20And then I am sitting on some storage areas, but right behind me, in real life, IRL would be our
01:27food warmer, which is a briefcase here.
01:29And if we had food in it, I would be opening it up and showing you how awesome it is.
01:33And then to round out our kitchen, the way most people have their kitchen at home is you have your
01:38entire hospital next to your kitchen.
01:40So, this is all of our medical kit area down here, and then we have all of our charging areas
01:46up here.
01:47So, if the kids misplace our USB-C cable, they have to go to time out over in this area.
01:53So, we're thinking maybe one of the sleeping bags will be kind of laid out around this bend right here.
02:01So, somebody's going to have a head maybe over here, and then the feet all the way down there by
02:06the eglis wall.
02:06And Dre, don't forget that I've already claimed the tunnel here, except you're not supposed to sleep with your head
02:11in there because of carbon dioxide.
02:13So, I'm going to be hanging like a bat is my plan, but I won't even know it because there's
02:17no gravity.
02:18Did y'all really get dibs on spots?
02:20She thinks.
02:21I know.
02:21I'm the only short I'm...
02:23Shotgun!
02:24Yeah, I basically called shotgun.
02:26I did.
02:27But my argument, even though it's very selfish to call shotgun, but my argument is I'm the only one who's
02:35short enough to actually fit in there.
02:37What do you guys think?
02:38Are they going to buy it?
02:39Are the boys going to buy that?
02:40You actually elongate in space?
02:43No one will fit!
02:44So, she may be too tall.
02:46That's true.
02:47I probably won't fit.
02:48So, we'll talk this over on orbit.
02:50And I'm going to lay down here next to Jeremy.
02:52Right now, I'm in seat one, and he's in seat two.
02:55And we're looking up at our displays and our switch panels, our controls for the Orion spacecraft.
03:01This is definitely where I think you would come for information.
03:03You have all your systems information here.
03:05And over here, you'll have a gas analyzer readout of the constituents or the different gases in the cabin, which
03:12is pretty important.
03:13And above our heads here are four of our windows, which will give us a beautiful view of Earth when
03:21we're in low Earth and high Earth orbit.
03:23And then, eventually, the moon as we do our lunar flyby.
03:26And then, come back home at the end of our 10-day mission.
03:31Yeah, when we're not pointing at either of those objects, I suspect we're going to get some great views of
03:36the stars if we turn down the lights in here.
03:38Yeah, is this going to be, like, your hangout spot?
03:41This is one of the hangout spots.
03:43Certainly, the windows are going to draw the crew together.
03:47We're going to see some cool things out those windows.
03:49It should be important to every astronaut, just not me, or not just me, breathing in space.
03:56We start here.
03:57We need to recycle our air.
03:59So, after we exhale, our air gets sucked in through this hyperfilter and then follow it along these tubes.
04:04And ends up going back behind the panel, and it's way back in there.
04:08You can't see anything, but in the bowels of the spacecraft is how our air gets recycled, removes the carbon
04:14dioxide, gets pumped back out.
04:16Comes out the other side, follow these tubes out, and gets pumped back into the cabin.
04:21Also, into the toilet area, and all the way around in front of the displays, in front of seats one
04:28and two.
04:28And that's how we keep breathing in space.
04:30So, here we've got both the toilet area and the exercise device on Orion.
04:35So, this is the flywheel exercise device.
04:37We'll start here.
04:38The toilet is right below it.
04:39So, underneath me right now is the hygiene bay.
04:42And then, it kind of looks like a rower.
04:44So, you have a strap here and a handheld bar or a harness, depending on what type of exercise you're
04:50doing.
04:50And the way you use it is actually in this direction.
04:53So, this is one of the things that we have to sort of think in a zero-g environment for,
04:58that the person who's exercising on this will have their head coming up in the direction of the docking tunnel.
05:05And if you're a really tall person, let's say the largest Canadian that we have, and you're assigned to this
05:10mission, your head is going to extend all the way toward the docking hatch in that direction.
05:15And the toilet is actually down in that direction.
05:18So, you can imagine the orientation you need.
05:20Your head would be up here if you were using the toilet and you were in this hygiene bay.
05:23And all the while, someone could be exercising.
05:26So, someone could be extending back and forth along this plane throughout the capsule during that entire time.
05:32It's going to be in 3D.
05:33It's going to feel bigger.
05:34I feel like that's a salesman line, though.
05:37Do we believe it?
05:37We sure hope we do.
05:39Yeah.
05:39Well, you know, in a room, when you stand in a room on Earth, you think about the ground floor
05:44and maybe the six to seven feet from the floor up because that's where we occupy.
05:48In space, you can put your feet up in the overhead because you can sit up there and be out
05:54of the way.
05:54And so, it does feel bigger in weightlessness.
05:57Absolutely.
05:57But then we'll also find new ways to get caught and to bump into things.
06:00And so, it really is an interesting dynamic.
06:02It makes some things easier and it makes some things way harder.
06:05Putting you down on the deck and now you're looking straight up into the docking tunnel.
06:09And so, that distance now on Earth, it doesn't seem like as much room.
06:12If I stand up, you know, I'm almost six feet tall.
06:15So, and, you know, my head goes up to the – so, I do fit, Nana.
06:18You do.
06:19You do.
06:20That's right.
06:20But you're going to get longer.
06:22You're going to get longer.
06:22Hey, let's stay focused on the president.
06:26Let's do it.
06:27But that space is going to feel bigger on orbit when we're floating.
06:32And then going up to the – again, the forward portion is what's up now.
06:36But going forward and looking down to the deck, while this may be an awkward space to talk about here
06:41on Earth where we have the normal pull of gravity, when we get into weightlessness, those two walls are going
06:47to be spaces that we work in and that we use more than we do here when we're on Earth.
06:53Yep.
06:53Yep.
06:54We'll be in every nook and cranny.
