==================================================

Post-revolutionary Tehran in the 1990s and the vibe is simple. Everyone’s watching, and not in a polite way. Azar Nafisi is a literature professor, but she does not stage speeches. She stages something riskier: a secret reading circle in her apartment with six of her students. No public revolution, no speeches. Just forbidden Western books, passed around like contraband.
They go through the usual suspects of this kind of rebellion. Vladimir Nabokov, F. Scott Fitzgerald, Henry James, Jane Austen. It’s “just reading” until it suddenly isn’t, because the religious and political pressure outside keeps tightening the room.
Eran Riklis, known for LEMON TREE, turns Marjorie David und Azar Nafisi’s story into a quiet act with sharp edges. Golshifteh Farahani brings the kind of intensity that makes you notice the danger in every pause. Rating-wise? IMDB won’t call it a masterpiece. But as a tense, human reminder that words can cost something, it works.
----------
Teheran, 1990er.
